Vince Vaughn in Brawl in Cellblock 99. Its amazing how I couldn't buy Vaughn as an intimidating presence in True Detective Season 2 and yet he completely sold me with his work in Cellblock 99.

The biggest one of all time was Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight. When Christopher Nolan was preparing to direct The Dark Knight in 2006, there was a lot of controversy of that Heath Ledger was a teen throb and no one thought he could pull off being a menace to society. After he died on January 22, 2008, no one was ready to see what was unleashed on screen that gave it the best performance of all time. Other actors like Keanu Reeves in Speed was another contender as well as Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man and Michael Keaton as Batman from 1989. All I can say is don't judge by what an actor wants to do to give its best performance. I think Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind was risky in my opinion but it really paid off what Jim can do with leaving his comedic roots to the side and his dramatic side we don't get to see. It was such a great movie.

I'm always amazed that Kristen Stewart played Princess Diana in Spencer, she's incredible in that and was also unexpected for the same reasons as Robert Pattinson.

i find it really difficult coz very often when casting is unexpected to me, pattinson in batman for example *cough* when i see the thing, it suddenly makes perfect sense. like, given nolan's movies and also batfleck, i just didn't think that bruce wayne suited him at all, but when i saw the movie, casting him made perfect sense. good time was actually less surprising, given a familarity with his previous projects. the surprise to me was that it was successful.

Robert Pattinson is such and interesting and eccentric actor, it’s sad how misunderstood he he is as an actor. What he did with The Devil All The Time and The King was just so risky but his performance pays off so much. The fact he’s always able to see how flawed the character he’s gonna play is and then he plays into it even more. (Just genius) He doesn’t take himself so seriously and that’s what’s makes him so interesting, because Robert loves acting like he doesn’t know what he’s doing and how he don’t think he can act.😂 Robert Pattinson is one of the most interesting, fun and dynamic actors working rn.

Good Time was the reason why Robert Pattinson was cast as Batman in The Batman according to Director Matt Reeves. His version is inspired by Kurt Cobain from the band Nirvana as Matt Reeves wanted a grungy look on his Batman. I couldn't believe Rob pulled it off as Batman after I saw The Lighthouse and Tenet. He's a great actor now than when he was almost 15-20 years ago.

I'd have to counter saying, while I may agree he's probably the Batman that showed his human side the most, to be fair, the story was told with a younger Batman than any others have done, therefore he's less controlling of his emotions. I wouldn't say it was BECAUSE of Robert Pattinson that he was so emotive but rather the script, and to top it off he's an absolutely terrible Bruce Wayne. Most actors who take up a superhero role must not portray one but TWO characters ex: Peter Parker vs Spiderman.

The Lighthouse definitely isn't for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. I never really had reason to assume Pattinson couldn't act (hadn't seen Twilight, not into Batman, hadn't heard of any other projects of his, & anyway I try to always assume people can impress) ... but he absolutely BLEW ME AWAY with his performance, not just in a "Wow dude can act" way but in a "Wow dude can act on a level most people absolutely can't" way. He's BRILLIANT. I'm thrilled he's been deliberately going for ambitious roles & I'm excited to see what he does in the future.

Yeah and Uncut Gems felt like such a real and stressful movie too. Like it was so busy and all the supporting actors just being themselves really sold it as a 'real' story. And even Adam Sandler's character doesnt feel like it's Adam Sandler, just a sleazy jeweler and gambling addict. The movie just put you on the edge of your seat where you wanna turn it off because it's so stressful, but you also don't want to turn it off because it's so chaotic and real. Like it's just happening to someone out there rn in real life.

It’s so wild to me people HATED the performances in twilight to the point of branding Rob and Kristen as the “worst actors ever” when they legitimately did a PERFECT job portraying the characters they were hired to play. I know right? I read the books cuz I'd heard so much about them and generally enjoy vampire stuff . The books were cringe and the movies reflected that exactly!! The actors did what they were supposed to . It's a shame when an audience can't grasp that fact.

What else can one expect from a bunch of people that read those books and thought they were good enough they would go see a movie based on them? People who read the books and liked them failed to realize that the major characters were actually nothing more than husks... whats more, it's intentional. The major characters are intended for you to place your own persona onto them, so that you may live vicariously. The descriptions are vague and used sparingly enough that they may be ignored. The character motivations are flat enough and basic enough that they can simply be thought of as things that are happening to the characters, rather than the result of anything the characters choose. Turns out, that doesn't work as well when you are constantly reminded the character in fact is not you, when you see their face in every scene. It is even harder when you are faced with the reality of how the characters are actually written, rather than how you mapped your own persona onto them.

A few years ago i read an article or something where Rob said that when he first read the book and the script he immediately hated Edward Cullen. So he decided to play him the way he interpreted him: A boring 100+ year old virgin vampire who hates himself. He did it perfectly! You really have to hate yourself to keep doing highschool over and over again for decades.

I was a teenager when Twilight came out and it wasn't as terrible as people say(the first one), it was kinda fun to watch and had really great soundtracks and the director for movie killed it and it was obvious Pattinson is a high level actor, the role he plays is cheesy and but he was clearly playing the character as best as anybody can and I always knew he's gonna be successful, people who were surprised that he's Actually a great Actor are just naive, just because the movie became a meme it didn't mean he's a bad actor, of course they shit on him for becoming Batman as much as they could but he was clearly gonna silence people.

In The Rover, his performance was so pure - you felt for the character and wanted him to survive. That's when I called my good friend's at DC Comics and told them, "Cast this guy as Batman! absolutely love the safdie’s approach when it comes to casting for authenticity in their films. just picked up the criterion release for daddy longlegs and it was much of the same approach casting-wise. the fact that they were able to cast 2 real brothers and their mom with no acting experience just shows how much faith they have in each other’s direction. i really love how that is never conflated with arrogance and that they separate that confidence from ego. absolutely love these guys. speaking of criterion and films with non actors, i checked out sean baker’s film “take out” the other day and it was that same underground, chaotic feel the safdies tend to have! if you like these guys you should definitely check it out. almost everyone working in the restaurant the film is set in are real employees in it, and all the delivery customers were non actors told to react how they would in real life just based on 30 seconds of observing their personalities!

he's so amazingly good in that movie. he's been doing so many bit parts, i love it when he's given a larger canvas to play with like in good time or of course in batman. like, i think him being given time to prep and really understand the character pays off dividends and i love that the safdies saw him and were like, awwww yeah it'll be so much more exciting to fuck him up. 😆 i really dig the choices he makes for parts but i'm very worried there aren't too many interesting parts being written actually. i hope i'm wrong.

Good Time is one of the best films I've EVER seen. I was so surprised by what it was, it captivated me right off the bat. The disbelief suspends itself in that one, and the experience suspends you for the whole duration. + For a long, long time I haven't been genuinely shocked by a movie, but a couple of scenes in Good Time... man, what they did to that security guard at the fairground; his shrieks and 'speaking in tounges' still haunt me.

I hate when people are so narrow minded when it comes to actors. We all have to start somewhere. Look deep enough into someone's work, and you'll see shitty projects they had to take for the sake of getting started, and needing the money. You get a lead role, that offers an entire franchise of installments, guaranteeing you a lot of money and recognition, and you're not going to take it? Bffr. Yeah, you'll always to some degree be known as "that person from that popular thing," but you will get more roles, especially if you work hard enough and find the right connections to directors/writers/producers who see your potential and drive.

I've always stayed away from the movies that garnish realism into portrayal when most of us live with our own demons, why would you willingly place yourself back in those environments unless you have made it out of whatever hole you've dug yourself into, unless it's to remind you of how far you've come or it relates to your situation so you feel less alone.

The apprehension and surprise around Rob's acting abilities has always said a lot more about what people think of Twilight itself (and therefore is just a projection of the people themselves) and not of Rob at all. His role as Edward was fantastically done, as a long-time of fan of Twilight can attest. People may not LIKE Edward or Twilight (including Rob himself) but Rob was perfectly cast for the role and did an amazing job. Even when he was typecast and put into Remember Me, he was amazing in that role too. He's always been great. People just shat on the movies he was in and assumed he was a bad actor, which is just. Insane. Now people think they've found some sort of insight into him -- literally just because they LIKE the movies he's in now. e_e

Good Time is one of my "profound" movies. A movie that stuck with me. He plays its so genuinely dispicable and unlikeable, and yet you somehow feel for him as well. Like things could be different for that guy (and guys like him) if his past was just a little different. Some people just seem to have a fate of destroying themselves but all it could have taken to change that was just some moment in the past.

@@comment15 Contact, Mother, Into the Wild, Another Year, Elle, would be ones that come to mind for me. All really different in style to Good Time but profound in their own ways. Good Time is incredible though - my favourite film.

Robert Pattinson was already in Cosmopolis, The Rover, and Maps to the Stars, so it is not difficult to imagine Robert Pattinson being in 'Good Time'. In particular 'The Rover' is when people sat up and took notice. Not to take anything away from his performance in Good Time, which for me was Oscar worthy, it's just that the opening statements of this video are not true, and the Safdies were certainly not the first to give him an opportunity to spread his wings, and his trajectory was already heading this way. (He stated in an interview a long time ago how he was choosing roles based on interesting directors he liked.)

Pattinson had done The Rover, Cosmopolis, Maps to the Stars, The Childhood of a Leader, that Herzog movie, and a couple others that ranged from good to great performances. He is an active part of the NYC art scene. I don't think it was a complicated process.

I grew up around guys just like that, he really nailed that role...even the part where guys who are really mentally disabled are taking wraps for crimes they really don't understand...I've seen that exact thing many times. Except usually the siblings don't care as much as Pattinsons character did in the film.

I'm sure that Pattinson only took the role in Twilight so he could do what he really wanted for the rest of his life; REALLY GOOD MOVIES that doesn't get the funding they should. But that's just my two cents. He have come out time and time again *against* Twilight, since it's a really fucking toxic look at "love" (more like obsession). I think the same can be said for Kristen Stewart, because she's become an Indie queen since then.

I'm sorry, but I'm tearing up right now. They encouraged that girl to write her OWN memoir of her OWN struggles with addiction and rehabilitation then act HERSELF in a movie about those struggles. That's so incredible. Just imagine how much she got out of that. Not even money or exposure or whatever, but the ability to share your story like that and to have hope that it might be able to help others in the same situation you were in. That's just so magical

This isn't a new thing, Pattinson has been a superlative actor in everything apart from Twilight. "Cosmopolis" right after his stint in the franchise is one of the most truly demented, left-field films I've seen-absolutely brilliant.

I don't think GoodTime even was a flip for Pattinson. He went straight from Twilight to doing differend kinda characters and movies, couple with Cronenberg (I think those two for him might have been while the series was going). Independent smaller stuff. Thing is that a small majority started to see him after GoodTime and the rest after Batman because he was written off after Twilight. Tenet ofcourse, Devil All The Time too. People were so angry for him to be Batman that it took people in know for like a month to change the narrative and that was a lot of GoodTime which did it because it had a large audience for a small budgeted movie and I don't think Tenet, Devil or Lighthouse were out yet when the news broke out. He did straight after Twilight movies a post-apocalyptic gritty movie The Rover where he is mentally handicapped little brother of Guy Pierces character... and dude managed to keep up with Pierce so obviously he was talented. Was the movie 2014 or something.. anyway longlong time ago it was quite easy to see that he looks for differend kinda parts in interesting settings in a script. He was almost fired from Twilight at the first one because he wanted to do things differently and his agent needed to call him that you are off this week if you don't stop suggesting things and just do what they want because he had no leverage and it's not artsy movie. Meaning even he hates the role and the choices, but it was made for teenage girls in mind so why have layers when brooding sexy guy with piercing look is enough.

Also for example Sandler have been in legendary director Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch Drunk Love from already 90's, which isn't his only drama or drama with comedic elements. Like Spanglish or couple other movies so it's not like it's not known that Sandler can pull it off. Ofcourse every movie needs a right actor for a right role so I don't mean you can put him in anything, but I also mean in this case too that it isn't just seeing something that others haven't and making a risk. The concept was again already proven.

One of my favorite movies of all time, City of God, also used this kind of casting. Granted, the film was in Portuguese, so I can't say how natural the actors sounded, but they all looked amazing in their roles.
