I find that combating depression is both complicated and simple. You can't just try harder. But you do need to persevere and endure. Persevere and steadfastly work through the issues, until the day arrives where you find out that you can "pull yourself up by the bootstraps". Time truly does heal all wounds, even if the scars that remain are ugly and ache.
@heathersanders55924 жыл бұрын
Something that’s also great about this movie is that Riley’s parents actually hear her, when she tells them she wants to go back they don’t say “well we live here now”, they basically say “You’re not alone in mourning and missing Minnesota, we miss it too, with you”. And that’s such an important validation that gets missed in conversations alot
@User-i5b4b4 жыл бұрын
Yes! I feel like most parents mean well but don't realise that this is so important. Like it isn't nice that we feel these emotions but it's normal and even parents that are supposedly perfect can be sad, angry and scared. The best thing is if you don't affect others when feeling "bad" emotions and learn to get over and process "bad" emotions. You are so right!

I just realised now that joy has blue hair, Sadness's color, she's the only in one among the other emotions to have a hair color not matching her own. A clever visual clue to show that the ending is also Joy accepting that part of herself will always come from sadness.

That’s exactly what I thought, when I first watched this movie I wasn’t old enough to completely understand what was going on but the thing that stood out most to me was the fact that joy was the only character multiple colours. As well as that, the blue parts of her are the most noticeable, being her eyes and her hair, they stand out a lot more than the yellow parts of her do and they’re the most important parts of her, especially her eyes. It’s an amazing character design, it literally tells you the ending of the movie, you can’t have joy without sadness, that’s why you can’t think of the character joy without her blue hair and blue eyes

You know a movie maker has talent when the "death" of an imaginary friend makes you cry. RIP Bing Bong. Your passing was a true showing of how parts of our childhood die as we mature.
@stargazer194610 ай бұрын
He's not really dead, he's with lost memories. From my experience in my late 20's there are occasional moments when I'll remember old imaginary friends. So maybe Riley, in her 20's or even 30's will have a memory, however brief it may be, of Bing Bong.

My version of Bing Bong that makes me sad is (im 39 rn) when i was a teen, i would collect many favorite obscure songs and bands and keep it on an old External Hard Drive... after years it broke at around my mid 20s. I just recently remembered an old local indie band that i used to play song on guitar with... they were not popular so not even KZbin has it...just a few weeks ago i found my old CDs and i found that bands CD! I just dont have a disk drive with anything to play it...but it resparked a "Music Bing Bong". Still makes me sad thinking of all the music i used to get emotionally connected to that I wont ever be able to re-hear again 😢 DJs and artists that dont exist anymore. (same feeling when my Favorites YT playlist ends up "unlisting" or "deleting" songs I saved here.

It always hits me hard when they show that the mother is run by Sadness and the father is run by Anger, yet it's still a happy family. It shows how multi-faceted emotions really are. Sadness doesn't always mean upset, it also means compassion, empathy, understanding. Just like anger isn't always rage, it can be passion, determination, confidence. Goes for the other ones too, Fear can be cautious or strategic, and Disgust is also pride, standards, and morals. You don't need to be happy all the time in order to be whole. Your emotions don't define YOU, it's your perspective that defines your emotions.

You guys missed something. One of the things that makes this movie so brilliant is one line that most people miss. When Riley's mom tells her that they need to "put on a happy face" for her dad. That is the seed that causes everything that comes after. What makes this such an important moment is that it's so incredibly accurate to life. One innocuous, seemingly innocent, comment can totally screw a kid up. From this moment on, Riley feels like she's not allowed to be anything but happy. And that's when Joy starts trying to stifle her fellow feelings. Kids take everything to heart and they did an amazing job of showing that. I feel like it's one of the most important moments in the movie and I'm bummed I didn't get to hear you guys talk about it.

Notice how Joy is like the lead or the supervisor of everyone working on Riley’s head in this movie. With her mom, it looks like it’s Sadness. With the dad, anger. In line with what you’re saying, you can probably say that your external environment makes a big difference on your internal emotions. The dad is expected to be angry or dominating because he is some sort of entrepreneur and leads a team working in a company in San Francisco. For the mom, Sadness leads but she is way more mature than Riley’s sadness. The mom has been the support system of Riley’s family and she’s the one trying to keep the family together especially after moving to San Francisco from Minnesota. And expecting Riley to be this happy “monkey” and funny and goofy Riley at a time where it hurts and it’s pretty sad to be moving away, leaving your friends and everything else that makes your identity for good.

it’s actually quite clever how easily joyful memories turn to sad ones when touched by sadness, because that’s the nature of memories. you can be happy that you have these memories, but it can easily turn to sadness when you realise that it’s not like that anymore and things have changed as you grow up.

Exactly. Like you can be depressed without haing depression. You can have depression without being depressed. I have clinical depression. Ive had intrusive thoughts since the age of 6 but always come off as the bubbly fun girl. Im loud, im silly, but im also overwhelmed by any emotion. I am okaywhen im numb. I can function with numb. When i feel its too much and I dont know how to process it which leads me to essentially just disassociate because being in my head is a LOT. Seriously, therapy is so valuble, but so is having parents and family members be supportive and helping you work through that stuff instead of just dismissing it as childish nonsense. If you dont teach kids how to handle stuff they just wont.

One of my favorite touches for the movie is that everyone but Sadness has a place in Riley's life. Disgust drives her sense of taste and self-expression, Fear keeps her aware and safe, and Anger gives her a competitive drive in sports, but Sadness has no "role" until the finale. When Sadness sits with Bing Bong and listens to him, I literally whispered to myself "oohhh, she's Empathy." Sadness lets Riley relate and understand to the rest of the world, which is such an important role to play!

Sadness had a place in her life it's just that Joy always tried to run her. And that's the point of the whole film. She kept sadness bottled up. Toxic positivity is no joke. I'm more a realist but I had a coworker who was a preacher for positivity and optimism and one day he got frustrated by something and snapped and turned violent. Not allowing yourself to accept the full range of human emotions led to him bottling up his anger until his mind just broke and he lost control of his actions. It was honestly one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen and I am thankful when I think back that he didn't hurt anyone during his fit.

@Chinedu Atisele Thank you! Yes, I agree. I certainly also go back and forth. Personally I'm more of an optimistic realist. I believe most things will work out and will have a good conclusion but not everything is neat and tidy. Horrible things happen and we just have to learn to accept them and move on. Actually I'm watching a show atm that sums up this idea very nicely. It's called The Leftovers, and is about how people cope and grieve negative events that have ambiguous and undefined conclusions. It's a really great allegory for the fact that most things in life are ambiguous to some extent, and learning to live in that ambiguity is one of the only ways to move on and continue on the grieving process. I too think it'd be spectacular to just be able to choose to be happy, but unfortunately I have yet to meet anyone who claims they can do such a thing and who are actually able to practice their preaching.

Iii... wouldn't be so sure on the "forever forget" part. Bing Bong isn't a minor ordinary thing that Riley just did one day in her childhood and then moved on; she spent a long time imagining him, pretending to interact with him, drawing him, and she had fun doing so. There's a plethora of ways at least one memory of Bing Bong could sooner or later come back to her Maybe she sees a pink fluffy elephant-looking animal? Maybe she hears a tune similar to the one she made up? Heck, she could even be digging up amongst her old stuff one day and find drawings of him she may have done on paper and preserved And I'm saying this not taking into account what was said in the movie about the memory dump "erasing memories forever". Because... those were fond memories Riley made with Bing Bong; I can get not recalling a fond memory for a long time but... _forever? For the rest of her life, until the day she dies?_ We don't know that. Plus, Bing Bong got erased, but what about the _memory orbs_ of the time Riley spent with him? Do we know they're gone; that they fell into the abyss? How do we know memories can't bring back a lost imaginary person?

Back then it was because I found it extremely moving that the representation of Joy, a character that's dedicated to happiness and that feeling, experienced a moment of genuine sadness. It shouldn't be possible. After watching this analysis, I now realize it's because I'm acting like Joy. I refuse to let myself cry and put others above myself. I convince myself I don't get to feel sad because others in my family are feeling sad. The reason I almost cried when Joy cried is because I *am* Joy

I also noticed the difference between the parents brains and Riley’s. The parents/adults all have seats and work on the control panel together with one main focus (dad has anger, mom has sadness) but Riley through most of the movie only has one emotion controlling the panel. Towards the end they begin to share the panel; which could be representative of Riley beginning to understand her emotions better.

I always figured that her parents emotions were the more mature version of hers. Her dad clearly wasnt an angry person, I think that's more his sense of assertiveness. @kigut74434 жыл бұрын
@@craiglyons8946 i think you're on to something there. anger as an emotion is not inherently evil or mean, and sadness isnt always because you yourself are suffering. emotions are a very large gradient with different levels and shades to it. i really like your interpretation because it establishes that the emotions are not so one dimensional and can be represented in different contexts. anger is a good tool for knowing when something is wrong, or for when you are being unjustly treated. it is good for knowing when you feel strongly or passionately about something that you wish to change. sort of like how when you hear about someone being hurt and you feel angry on their behalf because you know they deserve better. and sadness can work the same way! your theory is amazing, and i love it
@kindle99204 жыл бұрын
@@kigut7443 when Joy is introducing the other emotions at the beginning of the film, doesn’t she introduce anger as “liking things to be fair”? And there’s an understanding inherent in sadness that allows us to be empathetic-when things go smoothly all the time, or we feel joy, we’re caught up in that and blinded to potential problems. Sadness is reflective, it demands to be felt and makes us confront those problems we face. Sometimes that confrontation leads to Anger. Similarly, Fear folds into disgust often in the film. Fear doesn’t know what broccoli is, so Disgust rejects it. Fear doesn’t want to be outcast, so Disgust tries to align with the popular girls. It’s so interesting to dissect these nuances in the film!

Seeing these two men unashamedly cry, when our culture tries to push the idea that men shouldn't cry, is so wholesome and such a wonderful thing for them to share. Everyone is sad sometimes, everybody cries and that's okay.

Crying is a completely rudimentary communication method for infants of indicating that things aren't okay. Crying in non-infants indicates a complete failure of self-governance... a system crash. It means things are catastrophically NOT okay to the point where it can't even be communicated in a rational manner. You see someone cry, you're seeing them having a system failure... and you feel GOOD about that? That is fucked up.

I love this film because it wasn't just targeted for kids, it was for everyone. What really hit hard to me was when the islands fell. It really showed how slowly, you stop feeling when you have depression. It shows the apathy that shows up. Bing Bong also hit me hard because I have a lot of stuffed animals and other memorable objects that remind me of my childhood. When one thing gets erased its tough. It also makes me miss my childhood and feel like I'm losing my grip on the last bits of it. It even showed the distance you put between yourselves and your loved ones. When Riley stopped answering her parents and started distancing herself, it reminded me of when I did that, and when I still do these things. This was an amazing review and I hope that anyone reading ng this has a great day!

Yeah I understand that- I am at the end of my childhood and all I got from it was everyone I knew and loved growing up where horrible people and I can’t wait to leave this damned home. I know the real world is scarier but I hate it here more- my parents are not abusive but they’re inconsistent and I always felt they didn’t actually love each other- I hated it- I have abandonment issues (it was worse when I was little but it isn’t bad now, I helped myself grow and learn that people grow and move on and I have to accept that) because of situations they caused, they meant well, but I just wish they would trust me. They demand my respect and trust when they don’t give me the same. I remember in middle school I would look out the window and see the trees and bird and cry because I wish I was that free- i still wish to be free. This house doesn’t feel like home and it never has- I remember this old friend, she was immature and a narcissist and because of her behaviour I have to mature faster then i should have- she gaslighted me and manipulated me and I tried to help her, i did, she didn’t know she was like that and I hope she heeded my words. She needs the help.

I just realized that throughout this whole story joy has felt every other feeling except for sadness. Especially in this scene 12:10. If you watch the whole scene of getting bing bong out of that place, you can see that joy gets scared of the vacuum, disgusted by the broccoli, and angry at sadness stepping on the wrappers (more like frustrated, but still). She doesn't want to feel sad, but she doesn't care about feeling anything else. She only becomes sad after this when bing bong disappears. It's pretty interesting.

And I love that Anger is the dad's sort of leader emotion. I mean, aside from the obvious joke, it makes sense. For most guys, our default response to some sort of obstacle in our path, like depression, is to get mad at it. Sure, it's not the healthiest way to live, but it works. If we get mad at the problem, it's easier to get it out of the way.
@razmataz13drums2 жыл бұрын
Its interesting you guys say this cause its actually the only part i dot like about the film. That the mother is empathetic and sensitive to others emotions but serious and shes sadness, and that the dad is this oblivious fun goofy, but kinda dumb and wuick to anger. It just feels very stereotypical father mother parenting roles, and i really hate that, especially the joke where she fantasises about the helicopter pilot, but he does something minimal and shes like swoon. Its really the only slight pernickity
@arkoudanthrope2 жыл бұрын
@@raspberryjam3724 I don’t know if I can speak for most guys, certainly not all, but for me personally, getting angry about a problem rather than sad feels less scary. If I’m sad, the problem has control over me. If I’m mad, I’m out to kick the problem’s butt. In my life I’ve gone through a lot, and most of that suffering came from some of the people I’ve loved hurting me instead. So all of this leads to a great fear of losing control. Being angry feels (wrongly, probably) like I have the upper hand anyway.

I literally started crying when sadness takes over and everything flicks back on. To me, that is exactly what it feels like to have a mental breakdown. Just feeling numb all day, all of your emotions are shut down, and then something flicks on. It literally feels like sadness turning the control panel blue, you just break down and allow all of your emotions to be sad because it feels real, and safe, and raw as hell. In that moment it's okay to be sad, you feel soothed by sadness, and you get everything out. The weight isn't lifted off your shoulders, you've taken it off your shoulders and you're placing it in front of you and saying that it's okay. Everyone who worked on this movie has nothing but my highest respect.

Women don't want to have relationships with me when I act vulnerable.. I've learned that being confident even if I'm not feeling it on the inside is what gets me socially accepted and fulfilled.
@gothxm3 жыл бұрын
Meh, everybody's different. Some people wont have success being vulnerable. People will just ignore them or make them feel bad about themselves. Some do well chasing strength, others do well doing the opposite. It all depends on the context i.e. the backdrop of that person's life, the environments they're in and what's expected of them based on their day to day lives, careers, relationships and what they believe they need to be successful. Its why two people could do the exact same things aka be vulnerable and get completely different results. Vulnerability is just a trait. Its not something everybody lacks or needs to live fulfilling lives. It all depends on what I've outlined in my comment amongst other things. I can't cover every exception and/or possibility in a relatively short comment. To close, in many situations just being vulnerable might be a detriment to that person. It has to be purposeful and done to enrich or provide something that is lacking within them. Just acting vulnerable can be a formula for failure. Another reason is where the person falls socially. Somebody popular and well-respected might have people around them starved for a bit of vulnerability from them. Any little bit of vulnerability is an event and makes people feel like it is significant and important. Another less socially adept person may be vulnerable all the time and people might be tired of it. It is so constant that you come to expect it. It doesn't feel as significant. Applying a catch alll rule like "people need to do this" or " people need to do that" isn't thoughtful at all. It wouldn't actually solve the problems that are allegedly caused by a lack of vulnerability. Short version : Vulnerability isn't always the answer.
@justinev163 жыл бұрын
@@gothxm I understand what you’re trying to say here, but when I said “not afraid to be vulnerable”, it’s in the context of letting oneself feel all emotions and not try to deny nor mask them. Being vulnerable in the sense of allowing oneself to regulate and identify one’s emotions in dealing with negative experiences. When other people make you feel bad for being vulnerable or showing real emotions, there’s nothing wrong with you, there’s definitely something wrong with them. And I guess it’s just society in general that plays a big part of the standard of having to act “tough” or “strong” all the time, when in reality, there’s nothing really wrong with it. It’s just been the “normalized” standard. At the end of the day, feelings are what makes us human. And it’s okay to feel hurt or not to feel okay. Always having to be “strong” or act tough despite negative experiences also has its downside (aka Toxic Positivity). We all can definitely feel upset or sad about things that did not go well or right, and there’s nothing with that.

what I love about Joy's design, is that she has a little bit of color of the other emotions: she has the pink lips that recall the red of Anger, a green dress for Disgust, the purple bag she carries is simbolic of Fear (also the fact she's afraid othe emotions will "contaminate" the core memories she carries), her own yellow skin and she has two major colors of Sadness. the blue eyes and hair. it's simbolic that every emotion HAS to be felt to fully experience joy, and the blue eyes are what stand out to me the most: the fact that you NEED to see sad times and to live though sadness to be fully happy.
