This is a short cinematic sequence shot entirely handheld on a Panasonic GH5 using only the LUMIX G VARIO 12-35mm f2.8 MFT Lens. The whole scene is edited in Premiere Pro and I used Motion Array for my complete sound design. From music to sound effects.
Everything is shot in 4K 8Bit 24P VFR 40% (Which basically means in-camera 60 FPS.)
As you can see the IBIS in this camera is incredible and for the color grading I have used my own lut and lumetri color for some details. I wanted to give this short sequence a specific mood of solitude and a bit of a greenish cold with some warm tints considering the scene with the horse and the solitude never being permanent.
Thanks for watching!

Hey JAY! The whole video was shot on the 4K 8 bit 100mbps 24P (with the VFR set to 60). My SS/Gain operation is set to Angle and is set to 180d. The color profile I use is: CineD Contrast -1 Sharpness -3 Noise reduction 0 Saturation -1 Hue 0 Rec format : MP4 I have this whole setting set as a preset to my C2 dial. My main setup on the C1 is basically the same but 24fps, without vfr and shot at 4k 10bit. And for comfort If I need 120fps I have that set on the C3 dial in the same style of settings as C2, but in 1080p to achieve 120fps.

Nice one my dude. What picture profile and settings did you use? I can’t seem to get away from the “video” look in my projects. 😢
@Cinedon
@Cinedon Жыл бұрын
For this one I used the Cine-D profile and just the saturation a tad down and sharpness all the way down. After that it’s all in the color correction. I tried to go as subtle as possible but still adding that desaturated greengreyish post apocalypse feel. The rest is all just the compositions etc tbh, because otherwise it still is very video. I’m shooting in V-Log lately and it makes a huge difference though, I’d highly recommend it if you nail the exposures etc better. This video here was pretty much just a practice video with some random shots to test the camera out.. A lot of possibilities with it! 😄
@toyinosi
@toyinosi Жыл бұрын
@@Cinedon thank you so much. I’ve only shot in the Natural profile up until recently when I switched to Cine-D. Just need to keep working on colour and saturation. I was tempted to lay blame on the GH5’s shortcomings and get the GH6 or S1H but I figured it’s not the gear but the user. 😆

Thanks for video! I got question - does this lens have a linear focus ring? Interested in shooting video with follow focus.
@Cinedon
@Cinedon 11 ай бұрын
Hi Viktor, thanks for watching. I’m pretty sure the Panasonic 12-35 Mk1 & 2 have a Focus by wire system. I heard the GH5 II has received a firmware upgrade letting you change the focus capability to linear on the 12-35 MK2, but this feature isn’t added to the GH5 MK1 or the MK1 lens. The speed by which you turn the wheel will cause a lot of focus shift in distance. If you need a similar lens with better focus capabilities I’d take a look at the Olympus 12-40 f2.8. You’ll lose some stability, but gain a lot more in focus. Thanks again for watching, soon there’ll be more!

@Cinedon
@Cinedon Жыл бұрын
Very true, although I was going for some compositions and natural use of lightings to reflect some cinematography. The title is standard à la KZbin as people search for the term to determine in these kinds of videos what can be pulled off. You are entirely right though. Cinematic would be considered a combination of a whole lot of things that are not necessarily a part of this video, yet every detail in it can be a part of it. 👍🏼

No, I believe it was even cheaper. It’s the Urth 82mm with step up rings that i used. This was shot in 8 bit though using cine-D. Using the ND Filter now with VLOG L and 10 bit is a real game changer.. I didn’t have the ND filter with me on a previous shoot and had to salvage images manually by tweaking settings, boy what a ride! I’ll make a video on that soon.

Slow motion, the "crutch" of the DP who wants to show cinematic footage. When was the last time you watched a 90 minute film that was all shot in slow motion? "Cinematic" does not mean "slow motion." It is a look that instills a feel in the audience, showing them something they don't usually get to see, captured in a way that communicates the mood of the scene visually, and the perspectives of the characters......all in normal motion. Slow motion is a tool used sparingly for dramatic effect or impact. It is not what makes a scene "cinematic." Please try again.
@Cinedon

You're a hundred procent correct. I could even add more to your explanation. However, this was one of the first videos I did, I understood KZbin's audience enough to understand what would attract clicks and went for that.... And here we are, I got your view and your perspective which has taught me something refreshing again. Guess, I succeeded somewhat, somewhere. Thanks for watching. Once my family time settles down, I'll give my filmmaking and KZbin another chance. Thanks again :)

@@Cinedon - Thank you for that response. Back when I was learning how to shoot narrative films I would click on videos here that had "cinematic footage" in the title and 98% of the time it would be slow motion footage. Sure, it looked nice....but we don't watch movies in slow motion, and it really frustrated me that so many of such videos were actually slow motion videos. Your response is fair enough. I appreciate someone who who can acknowledge what they didn't know "then," as we all go through that. And I also agree, the title did get me to click on it. It took me a while to learn that lighting seems to be what is most responsible for cinematic footage, followed by camera movement, framing, and composition. Lighting was my weakest ability so I did a lot of hardcore research into it, and for the past two years I fell into doing lighting for a Director. This has enabled me to really practice what I've learned and I learned even more. I've done lighting on a 45 minute fan film (with a global following), a few shorts for contests (one short is screening at the Cannes Film Festival right now, unbelievable), and next weekend we will be wrapping on a feature film that has taken me to the Las Vegas strip, desert, and Pittsburgh. I also did lighting on a couple music videos. They were a lot of fun. Over all this I've learned how incredibly important lighting is for the cinematic look, and how to get it, usually. So much to learn still. If you have not been able to play in the film arena I hope you are able to get back to it. I know how hard it is to be creative and not have an outlet to express it. Good luck.
@Cinedon

@@1001Hobbies You hit the nail in the coffin. Lighting is key. Very nice to see that you've had the opportunity to work on bigger projects with lighting and learn along the way. If one of them reached Cannes then the future surely must be grand. I've been studying lighting a lot, it's usually a much harder thing to pull off in practice than on paper. Especially controlling light as much as possible in outdoor (night) shots. For me, It is one of the key factors - along with movement and decor. If a shot serves no purpose and falls outside the narrative, it loses its cinematic sense for me. Lighting will make your shot look Hollywood, and the right composition and lens choice will make your shot look like Art. The narrative will tell your "Cinema". Glad to have had you click on my video and share this conversation, even if it was baited by the title. :) Thank you for the wishes. Hope you have even bigger projects in your future and even more creative freedom. Who knows one day we might end up working together. Cheers to that.
