Let's review the video capabilities and take a look at tons of example footage of the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35 f/2.8 ii. My review is based on over 4 years of use with the lens paired with my Panasonic GH5. I'll talk about what I liked about the lens and what I didn't like. If you're not interested in the lens itself, maybe you'll be interested in the variety of example footage I shot with it.

Footage shot with M43 lenses is reminiscent of that of the ENG broadcast cameras I used to shoot with. They are fine for photography or daytime run-n-gun video, when a clinical, interlaced look is less of an issue.
@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 3 жыл бұрын
Ya agreed Marc. There are some M43 lenses that I think have a minimized 'clinical' look, however the Pana 12-35 isn't one of them. Shooting in a LOG profile did help though.

Unfortunately, the sigma lacks the electronic lens correction to a Panasonic lens and in addition you hardly use 18 mm in an indoor room or for portrait photography

How well was the focus ring for video? I know those focus by wire lenses are tricky to manual focus with. Torn between this lens and the Olympus 12-40. Mainly because the Olympus has a manual focus clutch.

So the footage you showed in this video was all from the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 ii ? Some people say that the power ois stabilisation does not work well, and that the image jumps when you pan with the stabilisation on. Is that right? What do you say to that after using it for such a long time, is it true, can it be used without a gimbal? Thanks in advance.
@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 2 жыл бұрын
That’s correct. Everything with that lens. And I’ve never had an issue with jumping when I pan with stabilization on. That was my main lens I’d use for gimbal work and it worked great. Yes it most definitely can be used without a gimbal. I switched over to the Sony A7siii and the one thing I really miss from the GH5 and that lens is the incredible stabilization. It’s like you’re using a gimbal just by holding it (obviously not exactly, but it’s pretty damn impressive).

What do you mean by "too sharp"? Just a bit too pixelated? I'm planning on getting one for my GH5S and I've never seen my current lens look too digital or shap. I've always like sharp footage. I can always de-focus if I need to. Currently, I have the 25mm Panasonic f1.7.
@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 3 жыл бұрын
I mean it has more of a digital camera look instead of a film camera look (however it is a digital camera so it makes ). But ya, maybe too pixelated. If you like sharp then this lens is perfecto. You’ll enjoy it.
@SiliconPrairie
@SiliconPrairie 3 жыл бұрын
@@dylanjohndickerson Do you think that these sharper lenses can be compensated for with VHS/filmic effect plugins in Premiere Pro and such? For example, Universe VHS from Red Giant. It's what Kung Fury used, and that looks very VERY analog.
@dylanjohndickerson

Didn't seem too sharp for me. Also the Dual Native ISO of the GH6 and GH5 ii, is good enough to taper the lack of _speed_ of an f2.8 aperture indoors. With that said I am normally a full frame shooter in all capacities so my understanding of light comes from both film cameras and 2nd generation DSLRs (2008-2016ish). 3rd generation is mostly Mirrorless and some powerful new DSLRs as well, but my time with m4/3 is quite short, so I don't have a grasp yet of how well it handles light. Still? I have shot with a GH5 indoors at a concert using this lens. Perfect to me, thus far. Only lens to come out on top against this is the 10-25, which is a 20-50 equivalent, and it's a 1.7! Effing incredible
