Thanks for watching! I want to explain why we turned off the house lights. The lights in the ceiling of our studio are special and diffused and we didn’t want people to think that we cheated with this set up by supplementing the Walmart lights with our studio lights.

For several years I have been using mono youngnuo lights to help with my SAD but they are dying. So in the black Friday sale in 22 I bought a 3 pack of P60C to replace them. I use a couple of magic arms & ball head adaptors to attach my lights to two Tiger Mic stands which I have added plates from dumbells to hold them down However, I have also replaced all my existing lightbulbs with B7C's & adapters to make them work with the much safer bayonet system. I am currently exploring whether to replace my kitchen florescent tube with either an aputure/amaran type tube or fitting Track lighting & using my spare B7C's I am watching you as I have been wanting to create doco content since before KZbin But currently I am too ill to reliably do content creation but I am seeking to record my recovery back to health whilst setting up a content channel that has sufficient content in cold storage that I can publish regularly & reliably. So Along the way I have been picking up other aputure kit 2nd hand from ebay. Being Android based I am using a couple of Sony Xperia 1 v2/3 as cameras which were sold for parts but whose cameras worked & whose screens were good enough to be used. And I picked up 4 channel xoom recorder for sound & cheap head mounted camera both 2nd hand from ebay Can I also recommend watching the MarcusPix channel

Great video! Here are a few other items from Walmart I have found useful in a pinch: spring clamps, clothespins, parchment paper, aluminum foil, folding tent poles, paint roller extension poles, paint roller frames, poster board, foam board, bed sheets, milk jugs and binder clips.

I went that lighting route when I started. FWIW some AC lights flicker with the wall power. So I'd recommend getting battery powered lights. Still run them plugged into the charger -- but because it's passing through the battery, it doesn't flicker. ;) Depends on your fps vs the wall voltage, of course. ;)

I honestly don't think I'll ever get tired of watching jerryrigged budget lighting setups. Really appreciate you guys didn't cheat by using C-stand and even turned off the house lights! Playing the pedant here, but having a quiet recording environment and blackout curtains seemed to be pretty important. I suppose that extra $35 could have at least brought in a blanket and/or some black trash bags 😉

If you've got both subject and camera locked in position, having the second phone on a table in front of the subject - or in a shirt pocket - is a viable alternative. That saves you a few bucks on the makeshift boom mic set-up. You could leave houselights on if you unscrew the bulbs you don't need, but you do need the separation to hide the computational bokeh - it helps for subject separation, yes, but it's a telltale that you're using an iPhone, I'd have gone for a darker background, instead - the finished product still looks great, anyway!

Should have gotten a couple of white and black poster boards while at Walmart for bounce cards, cutters, negative fill. Still would keep under your budget. The things I always had around me my whole career were white foamcore boards, blackwrap foil, and gaff tape, and those things made some of my best work.

I can 100% relate to this video. We've bought an iphone for that fake shallow depth of field, but it was a disappointment especially around the head/hair areas, so I would probably add that blurry background in a post.

Very nice. If I may I would suggest that you add the following to your kit- paint poles(for boom, T bars etc.), black plastic table cloths( for flagging, negative fill), white plastic table cloths(for bounce, diffusion(LED lights only). I like the idea of make do with what you have or can afford. The imagination is the limit.

I was shooting a pilot for local tv and my helpers bailed last second-with all of my gear! Went to Walmart and pretty much did exactly what you see here. Thankfully I had an extra set of cheap mics and a Tascam recorder under the seat. iPhones are fantastic emergency backups, but they use variable frame rates-sync up external sound in post by using Audio Units instead of framerate, otherwise sync will drift wildly. And use ice in a ziplock bag to keep it from overheating while shooting.

one thing that I think would've possibly given a little bit higher quality would've been using filmic pro since it allows you to control more camera settings, but overall ive been incredibly impressed with the video out of phones recently. There's also an app for android called motioncam which allows you to shoot in cinemadng raw which is insane. But yeah the only downside would be that you don't have lens control like with a regular camera, but phones nowadays come with different lenses so even that isnt much of an issue.
