Some inside information: this ad was shot during the pandemic, early stages, and no big teams were allowed in Brazil (things were bad around here at the time). The DP is shooting with his girlfriend if I'm not wrong. I think she's the actress. The directors worked remotely on this with him. And the directors shot the old lady scenes (which happens to be one of their mothers, If I'm not wrong). I was at the agency who came up with it, and a friend was the writer on this... But well, it's a great example of how we can shoot great things using the knowledge we get and basically playing around at our own houses with the light that gets inside. Happy to see it here. Thanks for the knowledge, man!

Oh, and of course, the ad was released during the lockdown days, so the story is just showing a lady isolated on a lockdown (the reason why she's so bored).

Yes. I was at a garlic event this weekend. There were some images I wanted on a treed terrace with a great poured concrete wall on one end. The dappling light was awesome. A street performer was watching me, as well as a CTV correspondent, as I twisted and slithered around looking for the best contrast for my shots. As I was walking away, I noticed both of them gravitate toward the demarcation line between light and dark and the dappling I had been using and set up their kits.

Great example of breakdown. I love how simple it is and that you can do it alone in your studio just for practice or some *cinematic reels*. This ad reminds me of Perfect days movie. Love that boring and real stuff.

Could you talk about working with color? Would love to learn more about the process as it relates to creating lighting schemes that involve rich color contrasts.

There is a great book by Jeff Hawkins called On Intelligence that gives a theory behind how the brain works and what intelligence really is. It boils down to the following: intelligence is pattern cognition. If you want to get good at anything, it just takes being exposed to something a whole bunch of times. Cinematography is no different. If you have 8-10 go to shots under your belt that can be applied in any area, what else do you need?

Nice video as always! Any chance that you could talk more about shooting under bad conditions, like white wall houses ? Might there be more to it than contrast, shadow or reflections? I'd be interested. 😏

I’m not a Putrick but I checked the last one. Exterior shots is 2/10. There is also a lot of shots that are just completely flat without any contrast. But I do like the dark sequence. Not perfect but solid 7/10. 😊 Just buy some black plastic bags and stick it to walls for next shots to create contrast in white rooms.
