Practicals are my favorite source of light. They just look amazing.

I am so glad he mentioned two of my biggest pet peeves: 1) exterior night scenes always have that annoying blue colour 2) scenes with sleeping or bedrooms are always so bright Of course there aren't obvious solutions to these (especially if it is really important we see faces) but the silhouetting was a clever one I will try to remember.

The man spews info and techniques at 400 mph. I do think we need more at maybe 0.5x speed :). Thank you again CookeOptics!

Vlad C I agree totally. For him it is already tattoed on him it seems, but to me I had to rewind many times to follow. I liked most the grey color for night suggestion though.

"streaks and tips" is a temporary color hair spray. Spray the camera facing side to cut light

thanks man! this was the important bit that I didn't understand and now that you mentioned it I remember a "friend of ASC" video where they sprayed the bulbs and also the foam core bounce to make the diffused light coming from it more nuanced... Thanks again!

Getting free world class information. Worrying amount of complaining in the comments as always. That’s always a bit of a bummer. Thank you for the amazing free content!

I would disagree on the blue moonlight, because there is a blue hint in the real one. Maybe it is because I grew up with blue moon cinema and my brain just puts a blue hint in the real deal. It isn't very notacible, but it is there. At least for me.

Moonlight is the same colour as daylight. It's reflected light off the moon of course. Our eyes perceive as blue due to the Purkinje effect

I dislike night scenes where everything is still bright and all they've done is make everything bluish, it always takes me out of the film. What he said here about silhouetting by lighting trees and other background elements was really smart. Maybe it looks better if the characters carry practical lights around with them, like a lantern or something... then we can see what is happening but you're never thinking "that's not what nighttime looks like"

I like to shoot night with tungsten balanced stock or 3200k on digital. In my opinion it gives the most 'Hollywood' nighttime experience. If I need more warmth I just dim my pracs or bulbs.

Sorry, but that example of 2,5K Twinkle of light 3 miles away on the other side of bay looks really unnatural. It just looks like a dp puts the projector with the blue filter. In my opinion it looks really bad!
