I'd be scared to death shooting this interview (I mean, look at the title of this video. Your production better live up to it, right?). Kudos to the production team for pulling it off.

So many lighting courses on You Tube etc focus on individual set-ups and it’s easy to forget the fundamentals of light continuity when shooting a scene on location and still make it look great, which he did. Would love to spend more time learning from this wonderful DP.

This is what we miss from Cinematography these days. Billy didn't use a monitor to check the shot he had to remember (or take notes) what it looked like the previous day and we had Douglas Slocombe who never used a light meter Plus we are doing DI not photochemical finishing

I'm not sure what he means when he says that he doesn't like shooting with the light source behind him. Is he saying he likes shooting directly into the sun? Also, surely it's the clouds or lack of that dictate whether or not the light will be flat rather than the position of which you shoot?
@jayleon07
@jayleon07 5 жыл бұрын
1. He means he likes the light behind his subject and slightly off centre I.e. Not directly behind. 2. You can still get directional light with clouds. You just get lower contrast ratios until it starts to be similar to what you are describing as flat light. So yeah, position determines whether it is flat or not. Hope that makes sense
