I truly think he’s a genius. Euphoria is just a basic mid show without the cinematography style. Marcell truly elevated the show to a whole other level
@leronstar3942 жыл бұрын
How is it mid just asking personally I don't think it is because of the topics they discussed and bring to light so I completely disagree with you
@yumi12642 жыл бұрын
@@leronstar394 they do talk about serious issues but most episodes have barely anything going on expect for nude scenes. Especially in season 2 the first few episodes nothing was really going on except for a few minutes where they actually talk about something important. I absolutely think that the cinematography made the show 100x more pleasant to watch

I would recommend everyone to watch Balaton Method, a music documentary he shot in 2015. Every song is recorded on the spot around Lake Balaton in Hungary in various locations(including but not limited to: hot air balloons, medieval ruins, multiple beaches and so on) and the cinematography blew my mind as a teenager when it came out.

Béla Tarr (Werckmeister Harmonies has one of the most beautiful opening scenes), István Szabó (truly captures a young adults emotional state and fast changing life), for starters and on the cinematographers side Vilmos Zsigmond is one of the internationally famous ones and my personal favourite is Lajos Koltai (go watch Maléna or Time Stands Still for beautiful cinematography). Watch The Fifth Seal too. But I could write pages about our cinema in the 20th century. (nowadays unfourtunately not so good but workin on it)

Night time street scenes in urban settings, or Friday night high school football games with stadium lights. Whether it's the multiple light angles from street lights mixed with the saturated colors of neon signs, or the specular highlights in a girls eyes mixed with the strong contrast and backlit highlights, they both have similar lighting schemes that make for highly romanticized and high emotion evoking visuals. Hard to go wrong with that kind of lighting.

It’s funny, for all the big budget directors fetishizing theatrical exclusivity as a mark of “true cinema” then degrade some of the best filmmaking happening today as “movies and shows to watch on your phone”. Really?? So Roma, The Irishman, Mindhunter, Mr Robot, Euphoria, Patriot are all the sudden downgraded in aesthetic and cinematic achievement just because of their distribution model?? Most cult classics and forgotten gems that withstand the stand of time always gained traction in secondary/home release. The idea that theatrical exclusivity is the be-all, end-all feature of cinematic “quality” goes against the entire history of appreciating and celebrating moving pictures as an art form. Whether it’s on a streaming platform or has episodes doesn’t magically change or remove the artists creative ambition or process.

He's extremely good at that heightened music video look of colliding colours and dreamy haze - I just don't like it for dramatic material. It distracts from the drama, feels like the camera department is off doing it's own thing. Maybe that's needed for Levinson's somewhat overwritten and portentous stuff, to give it scale and feigned importance.
