Yo film riot! I gots a question! 1) When time isn't of the upmost concern, how do you know when your project is finished? (I always feel there is something I can do but never know what) 2) How long do you usually spend on a single shot? When filming with my friends, they are begin to complain when a shot is taking too long (mostly the setting up part) How long does it take to get your lights in the right spot/ how do you know when they are? I would love a response! Thank ya!

Ryan, I really love your show but may I give you a strong suggestion, by the way I learned this at my job which is producing videos. I noticed that when you play music it overpowers the level of your voice. I was taught to keep everything around the same level so that people watching and listening trough headphones won't have to play with the volume switches when listening to the dynamic volume changes of your show. Just something I noticed , I hope it helps. Keep it up!!!

Hazers DO NOT trigger fire alarms. Had a hazer running in a closed room for more than 5 hours/day until It's impossible to see anything, and never triggered the alarm. You can see how much haze I had in the first video on my channel.

Stu Maschwitz mentions using fog in "The DV rebel's guide". really cool to see a full breakdown. I once used fog on a film of mine, added a lot of atmosphere and menace to what really was just a shed.

FYI: hazers are generally heavier than most fog machines so for light setups I'd still go for fog machine. Also you can use straight up Mineral Oil from the grocery store in a hazer. That being said, if ran long enough you'll end up with a thin layer of moisture on your gear at the end of the shoot so be prepared to bring some cleaning equipment before you pack it all up.

My British filmmaker friend just bought this crazy haze spray Ryan. It can be sprayed for 15-30 sec, and will create a smoky haze that lasts for 1-2hrs. It will fill a large room up to 15 times. I'll try and ask him what's it called and where he got it from and then get back to you, okay? :)

There are Hazers for about 50,00 € + delivery from Thomann, a company located in Germany. I'm not sure are they the same stuff as those of $300. All I can say is that Thomann is cheap in almost every product they sell, due to the size of that company.

Very good episode. I didn't like the fog in the Adobe example to be honest (not all the shots at least, sometimes it was ok). It's not subtle enough and at first it looks like somebody burned a dinner there. The Spielberg thing though... brilliant. Flashlight beams look awesome. I did a music video for my band with a fog machine. We had a guitarist in an old and dirty room, lots of fog, and the light was shining only through a cracked window just behind him. It was surreal. When I saw the image in camera monitor I went nuts - that's like an instant movie look. One of the best memories in my life I think : )

Most smoke detectors have much less problems with haze, but keep in mind that haze is a very different effect. You must see haze as a fogmachine woch constantly runs on very very few smoke, with a fan in front of it. Haze never gets the true "clouds". Yeah people say haze is much better, becouse it makes the light beams appear without a real "cloud" of smoke. But sometimes this is just the effect you go for. Also, as a filmmaker it doesnt matter as much. What you did with a fan was basicly the same thing. Spread it out even more and use less smoke and there is your effect. As a mobile entertainer this wont work though, as you cant run through the room with a fan like some crazy fool. The money can be better spent than on one of those haze machines I tell you!
