At this point, Kristoff is due to die by freezing to death from a major character flaw he has that he will overcome and fix, saved by an ironic set of circumstances that gives everyone a lesson of some sort. He will also definitely not die because of true love or whatever will save him

I love that when Elsa is alive and when kristoff sees shes fine he runs and hugs her, because he doesn't just love and care for Anna, they are all family, he would be just as worried for her safety and upset if she got hurt, in a lot of films the s/o only cares for THEIR s/o but having them care for other members of the family is very nice to see.

I’m kind of sad you didn’t add one for when Kristof saved Anna and instead of saying something like “I got you” or “let me help” he says “I’m here, what do you need?” He let’s Anna lead instead of trying to be the hero and I think that’s a huge step from the normal guy types in Disney movies.

I'm a little disappointed that Kristoff's absolute fantastic "I'm here, what do you need?" line didn't get a win - for me that was one of the most powerful lines in the movie that made me want to stand up and cheer. Like "Yes. This is what a healthy relationship is supposed to be!" Kristoff was going through all that uncertainty on his part, but when he saw Anna needed him he put that all aside to support her. That's hard, and hugely meaningful. ...In case you can't tell, I loved this movie too. I'm glad you did this.

It was probably from the memes. Disney is very aware of everything around their movies (that's also why they make Frozen 2 this good to). One of the things that shown up on the first movie was Elsa's expression/faces in the "Let it go" song (made a lot of memes back then). Her reaction in this second film particular on that scene (where the memes focus more) is pretty much Disney show that it's aware that people liked it, that it was memorable. BUT it wasn't only that scene, the same happens at the "guess game" when Olaf expresses himself as Elsa (same scene from the 1st movie), even Elsa agreed with him xD. Disney knows very well their audience for kids movies (the right story, characters, songs, important points/messages and of course how to end) and this film is one more example of that. PLZ Disney, continue working just like that!
@rfixe
@rfixe 4 жыл бұрын
Just one more curiosity: I remember a few decades ago the trailer guy for Disney animation movies (at least from my country) said that Walt Disney left a full list of stories that he wanted to make into animation movies and let it to his studio to continue his work for future years to come. Many of the stories after he part away were his (beauty and the beast, little mermaid, Aladin, Hercules, etc.) and many others came out as a modern version of/based on his stories (Princess and the Frog, Rapunzel, the Snow Queen (AKA Frozen)). So, in a way, today we still are experiencing the original brightness of that creative and awesome person that was Walt Disney!

I actually think the opposite. I think Anna was right. Elsa pretty much killed herself. Anna didn't say "don't go" , she said "let me come with you". And when Anna wasn't there to stop her, Elsa froze. There wasn't a good reason for Elsa to push Anna away, they could've explored the truth together and come back and destroy the dam. She could've still found herself with Anna there. Also i feel like Elsa pushing Anna away was more of a regression.

It had the message that you can be yourself and not fear society (weather it’s your religion or political views or whatever) 2. It had more action(which appeals to people my age) 3. They made the concept of it accessible to both genders he said it himself he felt empowered when Elsa did her thing we can all feel that feeling in my opinion guys don’t relate well to sisterly love and this movie gave us a more gender neutral view of sibling love (although I don’t plan on holding my brothers’ hands anytime soon)

My favorite is that, in the charades scene, Else is holding a pillow to her chest as a barrier, showing her discomfort and social anxiety in such a clear way. When she's in her most confident moments, her hands are relaxed and clasped to symbolize that she's got things under control.

“I can’t imagine what girls in the audience feel about this” YEEEESSS?? Little girls may be aware they don't have ice powers but the thing that stuck out to me with that scene was that Elsa literally dove in at odds that were so fiercely against her. And it didn't matter how many times it took, she wasn't going to back down from what she needed to do. The image of standing before a stormy violent sea and having to go THROUGH it is relateable in a figurative sense. We all have our Dark Seas to face and Elsa's example is a fantastic lesson on how to deal with it.

I'd also toss in that this is one of the first movies I've ever seen where a relationship between an introvert and an extrovert is not framed as "the introvert needs the Power Of Love to show them how awesome people are," but just... different ways of being in the world. It's subtle, but looking at Elsa's body language during the charades game at the start of the movie and her chat with Honeymaren midway through is one of the best depictions of how healthy socializing works for an introvert that I've seen.

I think it was mainly just the different type of music. Moana's music was good and fun and all but the music in this was overall wayyy more impactful, powerful, and awesome. It mixed rock and nordic and orchestral all at once divided between moments where there was bone crushingly silent parts like what we saw from Anna, fully encompassing the feeling of loneliness and emptiness; an utter "lack of" that wasn't lacking.

Honestly, I agree with you about how Elsa doesn’t really need a love interest. Isn’t it much more empowering for a Disney princess/queen to not need a love interest to have a story that’s deep and relatable? “Show Yourself” said the same message for me - Elsa is the only one Elsa needs - it’s a message of self-acceptance when Hollywood tends to claim that you need to have a significant other at all times, or you’re defective and you can’t be happy. Maybe Elsa could be the first Disney princess/queen who says, “You’re awesome the way you are; you don’t need someone else to complete you! You complete yourself!”

I personally would have been delighted if she did have a love interest, though I probably wouldn't have gotten to see it the first time I did because my mom would never take us to see such a movie BUT my point is that getting our first Canon wlw Disney mc? That would have been incredible. Pretty much everyone knows that Oaken is mlm, and that the family in his store was his, but he's a side character, and that was something unnoticed by most homophobes. Elsa being queer, however? That would have tied in beautifully to her arc of self-acceptance, and characters being ace is pretty much never canonized except by LGBT artists, so as it is, it wouldn't be controversial for Elsa not to have a love interest, it would just be one of the first Disney main characters without one (not trying to exclude Moana here, it already doesn't have enough attention somehow). I was personally hoping that the Voice would end up being a beautiful spirit played by AURORA that Elsa would bond with and fall for. However, you're right too. The fact that her arc had exactly nothing to do with romance and that there wasn't any ANYWHERE in her story was also a super powerful statement that isn't made enough. Again, excepting Moana, Merida is the only princess that comes to mind who doesn't have a romance, and romance is still a part of her story. So this? This is beautiful, and the fact that it's a Disney movie not just saying "oh, you don't need romance to be happy! Just be you" but not even bringing it up in relation to this character is super empowering for people, especially young girls, who are constantly pressured to have romance and are constantly told that life is incomplete without it. It's not. I'm aromantic and asexual, and I know that I'm probably never going to have romance. And while that makes me a little sad, because it's a wonderful thing, I'm okay with it. My life will not be any less full for lack of it. I guess I just wish we could have had both, somehow.

I feel so bad for Aurora with "Into the Unknown." They made the background notes so goddamn high, and you could tell when it was performed at the Oscars that there was a struggle going on trying to hit that note. They pushed her so hard, but it was made so beautiful. I know Aurora will probably never see this comment, but if it is seen, know that I have all the love in the world for this performance. Re: Arendelle having to make an actual physical payment for pass misdeeds done in their name By breaking the dam Anna, on Arendelle’s behalf (she’s already effectively queen at this point with Elsa out of commission) demonstrates that she is willing to pay that material atonement, and by restoring Elsa and letting her save Arendelle, the Spirits in their turn are saying that it is enough that she was willing to do so, they do not require that the payment actually be made. And thus is a true reconciliation forged.

I think what made people unsatisfied was that the movie didn’t propose a way forward for current issues. The sins are not in the past. Disney lives on stolen land. And it’s not just the US. Today, Norway is facing issues with habitat destruction and indigenous self-determination, over the mines that fund its impressive welfare state and **literal dams that are meant to strengthen the land.** (Hydroelectricity, renewable energy.) I understand the movie makers punting on this; they are only cartoonists; this is far above their pay grade. It just made the movie a little unsatisfying. EDIT: I mean, forgiveness is a possible way forward, but in the movie it was decided for the Northumbrians without their consent. So very outside of the cartoonists’ pay grade.

@@SikerScrapyard I feel like that's the distinction between the story and real life people are forgetting, either willingly or unconsciously. Arendelle wasn't "founded" on land that belonged to the Northuldra or the spirits; their kingdom had been there for presumably just as long. The harm done to the natives wasn't theft of land, at least not in the conventional sense. King Runeard _specifically_ lied, cheated, and killed with the intent of weakening them because he was paranoid and awful. His kingdom didn't actually benefit from his actions in any way whatsoever, he just believed that they would because of his twisted cognition. The dam being broken only posed a physical threat to the kingdom because of the way water works, not because it stood on land that _should've_ been filled with water. That much is obvious when the water from the dam is stopped by Elsa's wall, but instead of proceeding to flood the city when she removes it, just fills the fjord even more, which is clearly the way the water flowed before the dam was there. (After all; water has memory.) So, the reason it doesn't present a solution for the "current imbalances" is because... in this story, there aren't any.
@tegan-lynn889
@tegan-lynn889 4 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but olaf says it goes against everything Arendelle stands for. And once she tells the lieutenant the truth he understands what also has to be done and helps her. And when she returns they build a statue of the king and queen showing their lands are unified. No one from Arendelle stood with the king when they found out the truth. They didn't deserve to lose everything if they were never okay with what the king did behind everyones backs once they were told what happened. For 30ish years all they knew was the king died. A tribe they tried to befriend was to blame apparently. And the second they found out the truth, that 30 year long lie was no longer belived and everyone stood with Anna.

I know! The movie was fantastic to watch in the theatre but I definitely appreciated it much more the second time round on DVD. I got emotional too during "Show Yourself", but mainly when the voice turned out to be Iduna...it reminded me of my own mother who passed away a few years ago, so I could totally sympathize with Elsa when she started happy-crying at the reunion. As far as Disney sequels usually tend to go, this was EASILY one of the best, because Frozen II further explored mythology (and did the proper history research to boot), went beyond the bounds of the first film's setting, had more fantastic songs, brought back the original cast members along with some great new ones, showed off beautiful animation, had a darker and more mature tone...yeah I could go on forever but this movie was definitely worth the six-year wait. Screw all the unimpressed negativity towards this film.

The first Frozen is technically a better movie from an objective standpoint - the story is constructed better, the scenes transition a lot more naturally in order to keep the flow of action, the sound editing is slightly better, and the overall structure is miles better. I also can't be the only one who kind of heard a similar leitmotif as the music from Disney's Sleeping Beauty (specifically "Maleficent's Spell" in the soundtrack) with the haunting notes and distant call, trying to lure in our protagonist. Listen to the two tracks side-by-side and tell me you don't hear it.

12:55 a missed win. I absolutely loved how while most movies would use the symbolism of climbing out of a dark cave, and seeing the light, as a sign of "you'll be OK", Frozen 2 keeps it real and makes it clear that even after all that, you might still not be OK, but that's OK. That you're allowed to feel bad, even when everyone else expects you to be OK by now. That moment where even after she managed to pull herself up, and escape, but was clearly still not OK, was absolutely amazing to me. So many other movies would have her wipe her tears, go be a badass, and never show any more greif after that.

Personally, I really enjoyed what they did with Kristoff in this movie. To me, his relationship with Anna was represented with a lot of very casual, realistic interactions that would be seen between a couple in real life. It dealt away with the classic trope that the princess automatically marries the guy the second they fall in love. His part in the movie shows that relationships do take work and can be a struggle- that they aren't always picture perfect. His song even portrays the doubt that can be present in a relationship. All in all, I thought it was very clever and natural how they decided to portray Kristoff.

i also like how it isn't the main focus. people can complain all they want about his arc, but the romance between him and Anna was NEVER the main focus. Not in the first and for sure not here. ALWAYS picking her sister over Kristoff is a *bit* unhealthy, but my sister and I are really tight, and she has mild depression and high anxiety, so I kinda understand. Not saying that I don’t love or not care about my girlfriend as much, but... she’s the person I’ve grown up with my whole life. And as for Anna and Elsa, they want to make up for lost time, and Anna just... goes a little overboard which is, again, understandable, since she’s now seen Elsa at her emotional limit and doesn’t want to see her hurting like that again.

The only thing that bothered me about this was that I felt like Kristoff's plot line was really unneeded; he could have stayed with the citizens and showed them the king he would be while Elsa and Anna solved the problem. Also, I really like that the first movie was set up to be about Elsa and it was actually about Anna and this movie was set up to be about Anna but was actually about Elsa.
@mm-zm8ys

I think that Kristoff's plot should be unneeded. There should be the focus on the girls, on other things. While it was okay as B-story, it shouldn't have gotten more attention. And it is good that he figured it out himself that it's okay, he doesn't need to worry about the love being fragile and just be there when Anna needs her. I think it was a good character growth. Especially because he figured it out by himself. And it doesn't take away from the A-story.

Kristoff wouldn't be king, actually. When a man of lower rank marries a queen, the most he can be is a Prince. Although that's admittedly based on my knowledge of the UK, maybe Scandinavian royalty did it differently. Still, I liked that Kristoff went with them as support. And I feel like if he stayed behind to look after the people it would really parallel Hans in a way that would feel suspicious, since that's exactly what Hans did to try to grab power.

I actually disagree, while it wasn't a large part of the plot it the movie actually showed a lot of their relationship's development and how despite all his frustration at her constantly sidelining him for Elsa there was zero resentment and the second Anna needed him he was there to assist. Then when everything was resolved, they were just able to communicate and address the issue, and frankly that's something we need to see more of in media.

This is late but something that strikes me in the Show Yourself song with the transformation... Okay. White gown with crystal details on the bust and gauzy see through fabric trailing down her back? Mom looking on glowing with pride? Hair done all pretty (somehow)? That's a wedding dress. THAT'S A WEDDING DRESS. The veil is attached to her arms instead of her hair and there's pants underneath but that is pure wedding dress symbolism. Elsa isn't just finding her power, she's finally fallen in love with and committed to herself. She's marrying herself. It's also a cute little knock against the traditional Disney trope that marrying a guy is the path to happiness. Not this time, self love is the path to happiness now folks! Also easy to read in an Elizabeth reference into it where Elizabeth 'marries England' in all her holy Queenliness at the end of the movie too. Idk if that's what was intended but I love that it's there.

I had really bad emotional dysregulation and anger issues growing up, which pretty badly damaged my relationship with my little brother. I learned to push down my emotions, and to be afraid of what would happen if they broke free. I saw SO MUCH of myself in Elsa in the first movie, and being told that I could be okay, accepting my emotions was okay, and my relationship with my brother could be okay -- I needed that. This sequel reinforced ideas of self-acceptance, self-love, healthy coping mechanisms, healthy boundaries and relationships, trust, apology, rebuilding... it was so good. Like sure it's a little corny -- it's a Disney movie, the frick did you expect? It's still wholesome and kind and smart and has dope music.

Fun fact: there is a whole deleted song (that I personally think would've atoned for Kristoff's rather plain arc) where Kristoff tries to propose to Anna but keeps getting it wrong. He has been forcing himself to fit into a noble's role, wearing tight clothes and fancy shoes, but all that prevents him from being himself. Eventually Anna makes the first move and just proposes to him (a progressive move in Disney movies tbh). Therefore, Kristoff's proposal arc would've been more of a "being myself while in a relationship with a royal/higher class" arc which would've been more interesting but not really within the movie's tone.

I've actually been brainstorming some ideas for an alternate version of Kristoff's arc. One of those ideas is a change in the whole reindeer proposal scene. Instead of the Northuldra chief who comes along, it's actually Elsa. She's initially confused, but quickly puts two and two together. Embarrassed, Kristoff reluctantly explains what he's trying to do. Elsa tells him that, as Anna's sister, she knows that Anna isn't expecting anything flowery or fancy from him. She tells Kristoff just to be himself and not overthink his proposal. When the time comes, he'll know what to say. That's one of the reason why Anna loves him. Elsa then asks Kristoff if he can stay behind and try to get to the bottom of what actually happened between the soldiers and the Northuldra. She leaves, and this is where we get 'Lost in the Woods'. Cut to later in the film when Elsa is at Ahtohallan (I have no idea if this is the proper spelling). Interspliced in between are segments of Kristoff speaking with some of the older Northuldran. Both scenes climax in the realization that the old king is to blame. This change adds a few things that I think the film was missing. Not only does it give Kristoff more to do, it also gives more of a spotlight on Elsa and Kristoff's friendship, a relationship we haven't seen much of in other Frozen media. Also, Kristoff spending time with the Northuldra gives the movie the opportunity to expand more on them and their connection to the land. I know this isn't a perfect change, but I think it does a better job of expanding on certain elements the movie fell short on. What do you think?
@nanaasmah938
@nanaasmah938 4 жыл бұрын
@@TF2Fan101 I actually really like that idea! Having Kristoff stay behind and learn about the Northuldra would definitely make it feel like he served more of a purpose. And he could explore the relationship the Northuldra have with the soldiers from Arendelle who were left behind when they were trapped in the forest (since it wasn't really explored. They spent years trapped together, there has to be some story between them there). And having Elsa there would strengthen the relationship between them.

When the second movie came out, I was so happy that Disney chose to continue her self discovery. Even when you accept yourself, its hard to find your strength and embrace your powers as an individual. "Into the Unknown" and "Show Yourself" were the perfect songs to explain her path. It never even crossed my mind that some people wouldn’t understand why Elsa didnt have a love interest because, well, Elsa didnt need one; it wasnt important for her to have one. I honestly love the idea that Elsa is aro/ace rather than her being a lesbian. i'm surprised you didn't win the moment in "into the unknown" when her magic manifests into the four spirits before we even meet them, that bit was so satisfying to catch the second time through. also, i really enjoyed the moment when ryder and honeymaren reacted to the mist being gone and seeing the sky for the first time and that hit really hard for some reason.

With and without the animation, they become totally different songs. With the visual it's filled with cringyish comedy, whereas without the visual it's much more serious. I guess I like it in different ways. If I had heard the song without seeing the movie I'd find it beautiful. But because I saw it in the movie first, I find it cringy (but not in a bad way, exactly).

With Anna's song about just taking one step, I remember being in theatre with my friends, and I leaned in and whispered to them 'this is what it's like to live with suicidal thoughts.' Everything seems so dark. Everything seems so heavy and you just feel extremely stuck. But the way I make it through, is simple just with the 'one step. I've made it this far, I can handle one more step. One more hour. One more day.' It really helps a lot, when your mind is trying to convince you your life ain't worth living

I saw this in theaters with two of my friends on a day where I was having a, what I call, depressive episode. I do not have clinical depression, but I sometimes get particularly depressed due to varying reasons. When Anna's song came up, I felt my heart stop in my chest and my breath seize a little. I identified with the song so hard, and had to squeeze the life out of my friend's hands just to keep from sobbing my eyes out. Unfortunately, it did make me choke up and cry. Not sob, but cry. It was so powerful to me, and was kind of refreshing to see in an animated film. Maybe cause I haven't seen anything like that in awhile. I came out of the theater feeling a little...I guess cathartic? Anna's song pretty much solidified Frozen 2 as one of my favorite Disney movies for me.

Theory: Elsa can control all of the elements, she's just most comfortable with water. While in Ahtohallan she summons a wind, and she usually uses winds to build her snow creatures (Olaf and Marshmallow). Edit #2: She picks the fire spirit immediately after it was hot enough to literally make the grass spontaneously combust, so she must have some sort of Heat resistance. Edit Because I thought of this later: In many cultures, the fifth element also tends to be all, or some combination of the other four (aether in alchemy, Akash in hinduism, Japanese void (which really represents unknowable)).

I also noticed that Elsa in some way tames/straight-up dominates every other spirit. The only one she doesn't directly confront is the earth giants, and one of them literally walks up and BOWS to her at the end. I have to agree - she's not just 'one of the five', they set us up to believe she's the 'ultimate'. Idk, goddess was the closest word that feels right to me.

On the critics' side, their average score is a 6.72 out of 10, but 77% of them consider the film at the very minimum passable. The original film got a higher score and approval rating from critics. I'm just gonna add another "I'm surprised people didn't like this movie" to this comment section, not that I thought everyone would like it obviously but I had heard good things from friends and family so I didn't realize that the general reception was negative. Some stuff went over my head and this video helped realize some of the finer details in the story, which was cool. I actually don't agree with the idea that Arandelle? Arandele? Whatever its spelled like, should have been destroyed. At first I did, not because of the sins of their past, cause the people who live there now shouldn't be punished for what happened before and instead the people who were harmed should be helped instead, but because I thought that Anna's sacrifice was kind of rendered pointless if Elsa just saved it, but I realized something else while watching this video. Elsa IS the fifth spirit. She has the companionship and respect of the other spirits, almost like a leader, and she's also usually doing stuff because something or someone is leading her to do it. That moment was not just the Queen protecting her people, but also the Spirits forgiving Arandelle for what had happened. She basically represented a bond between both the spirits and people, as the fifth spirit should do, and in the end, SHE decided on her own terms to immediately go there and protect the city after everything that had happened up to that point, using her powers perfectly as she had fully embraced who and what she is. The act of sacrificing the city wasn't rendered pointless, Anna believed fully that she was going to destroy it without realizing Elsa would have saved it. Its just the spirits also decided not to punish them after everything that had happened and a new era of peace and friendship between both people can start again. Anyways this was just my thoughts on that, generally speaking I also prefered this movie from the first one. I do like the first one, my problems with it was mostly it sometimes felt like it didn't exactly know where it wanted to go or what it wanted to be and took too long to figure it out, but was otherwise good. This movie just felt like they really knew what they wanted, where the characters would go and what would happen. I found myself figuring some stuff out and being surprised by others, loving Elsa having more control of her powers and being willing to use them now, the sisters were good, the humor was hilarious, the songs were amazing (I don't think there's a single song I didn't like in the movie, which is rare), animation was great. Had some minor flaws yes and if you look at it long enough you're bound to find some stuff that could be better, but all good movies have that and I feel like they succeeded in doing what they wanted to do. All in all, loved it and I would love to see another one, something I rarely ask for when it comes to disney movies, but this movie gave the frozen universe a lot of potential for stories to be told and an interesting world to be built.
@emilyhuang5997
@emilyhuang5997 4 жыл бұрын
They explain the thematic reason Arendelle wasn't destroyed in-universe, which you extrapolate pretty well. Honestly the only reason I might be inclined to think it should've been destroyed is because it was set up, but setups don't always have to have the expected payoff.

Another thing I loved was when Kristoff helps Anna escape the giant chase at the very end and what he says to her is "I'm here, what do you need". I felt like it was a great way to show a healthy relationship. He isn't the hero who is saving her, he lets her know that he's there to help her do what she needs to do. They're partners, and I think that's an important and empowering message for a young audience.
