@mackielunkey2205 Жыл бұрын
Hobie being the one out of all the Spider-People to side with Miles really struck out to me for two reasons. 1) While the other Spider-People like Peter and Gwen served as more of a judging-enforcing type of superhero, Hobie’s more of the rebellious hero that empowers people to lead than calling himself a leader. 2) The original Hobie Brown started off as kind of a loser that was unsure of what he wanted to do and how to stand up for himself, and having his developed self guide somebody in a similar situation like Miles was perfect for the story.

Okay, I have to bring this up because it blew my mind. In Mumbattan, Miles immediately gives distinct orders to the three other Spiders that apply to their skills. He sends Hobie and Gwen to slow down the building because they are the most experienced and powerful heroes there. Miles and Pav clear the civilians because Pav knows the city better than anyone and Miles' free-running skills work better with the tight, narrow buildings than web-swinging. And here is the part that blew my mind; This is a *direct* contrast to how *bad* of a leader Miguel is. He gives one general order to every Spider in the Society, which results in them not even knowing who to go after, clawing over each other and getting in their own way. Edit: Adding on to this, it shows how well each character can compartmentalize their personal problems; Miles has every selfish reason to show off in front of Gwen, especially with Hobie just showing up and being better than him in almost every way and clearly having a close relationship with the girl Miles is crushing on. But he sets that aside because, like all the best Spider-Heroes, Miles's first and greatest motivation is to help and protect people. But Miguel, while he may have more wide-reaching motivations, is so hyper-focused on keeping Miles from being Spider-Man that he sends everyone to stop him instead of dealing with Spot, who is *actually* causing the Anomalies.
@ghostslayer1981 Жыл бұрын
Which, you gotta admit, is impressive on its own. Miles JUST met Hobie and Pavtir, yet he can get them to coordinate and safely rescue literally everyone. Hell, the only possible casualty if Miles hadn't been raised right and listened to Gwen when she stopped him would've been Chief Singe. Meanwhile, Miguels been running the Spider Society for who knows how long now? Ever since the initial collider? Thats been a little over a YEAR. AND HE STILL CAN'T GET A PROPER TEAM. The only time he probably gets it together is when he drops the society as a whole and sticks with Jess and Ben Riley. And even Ben got taken down by Gwen, no issue, leaving just Jess and him. He didn’teven take account Miles previous allies, Penni, Noir, Spiderham, and newest recruits Hobie and Pav. Despite Miguel saying Miles was a mistake, i choose to believe this is Miles story. This is hos canon event: being the new Spiderman and leading the team.

@PsychicSiren710 ай бұрын
@@FirethornYT Actually, according to the Spider-Man 2099 comic run in 1992, Miguel actually got his powers via a genetic resequencer! He was protesting doing human experiments trying to replicate the original golden age Spider-Man and those types of powers, and they got a convict to undergo the testing, despite not being ready for human trials. After it went very, very wrong, Miguel tries to quit Alchemax, but his boss drugged his wine with a drug that permanently bonds to a person's DNA, and since the company he's trying to quit is the only supplier of said drug, he has to stay with them, or go through horrific withdrawal and die. So he chooses the third option of replacing a tiny bit of his DNA with spider DNA, in hopes of getting rid of the drug before it permanently bonds to his DNA. A jealous Co-worker sabotages him, and makes him 50% spider instead. And that's how he got like that. We don't actually know how many cues the movie took from the comics, but I'm guessing that the serum he injected himself with is something to neutralize his spider instincts, as he has those in the comics and it would make sense.
@Novakain.9 ай бұрын
@@nguyenxbj It also lends credence to the thematic idea that Miguel is a complete parallel to Miles in that he ALSO "[doesn't] belong" with the rest of the Spider-people. @brianadoesart5195 Жыл бұрын
One thing that I have only seen a couple of people point out-- Miguel is straight up WRONG about Pavitr's dimension. What is happening in Pavitr's dimension is NOT the same as what happened to the universe where Miguel replaced his variant--- it's what the ORIGINAL Peter Parker from Miles's universe said would happen. A BLACK HOLE Opened up under Mumbattan. Chris Pine's version of Peter Parker says that during his fight with Green Goblin and Kingpin and Prowler. He warns them that if they use the collider it could open up a black hole underneath Brooklyn. THAT is what's happening to Pavitr, but Miguel is, like most of the audience for most of the movie, underestimating the Spot. He's too focused on Miles. He and the other Spideys aren't paying attention to the Spot and the damage he's doing. EVEN AS HE IS DOING IT. Spot is a massive threat and they're STILL underestimating him. It's a big thing and it's crazy to think about it.
@irrlichtarchon Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Thanks for pointing it out, I've spent so much time wondering why nobody ever mentions how the collider plays into the destruction of dimensions, even when they are talking about Miguel being wrong. I'm super curious on how the third movie will explain how Miguels fake-life dimension fell apart, since it wasnt a disruption of a canon event (Miles asked him what happens if you break canon, and Miguels response was "Do you wanna find out?" which means he doesnt know either), and how Miguel came to think canon events existed in such a thing as the Multiverse, where literally every version of reality exists. He's obviously trying to make sense of his trauma, and chooses spiderpeople with similiar stories. It's simple confirmation bias at this point (spiderperson shares this event with other spiderperson, when event happens, universe stays intact), but how did it start out?

Pacing, presumably. There isn't really anywhere to fit the first scene without disrupting the flow of the Spot's arc and the movie as a whole, which are already fine as they are - the seed of the Spot's insecurity and the need to prove himself have already been planted and fanned by the end of their first fight, and we can see them grow throughout the movie just fine without another scene dedicated to reinforcing them. The second scene would just undercut the ending - the solid ten minutes at the end dedicated to amping up a high-energy, edge-of-the-seat cliffhanger would just be undermined by ending it on a slower, more ominous sequence. That extra gravity isn't really necessary and would act as pebbles in the shoe of the already exceptionally tight pacing.

A small detail that I love is that Prowler-Miles' accent is hispanic: we don't get our accents from our parents, but from our peers. The fact that P-Miles speaks with a hispanic accent, rather than the same one Spidey-Miles uses, means that his social circle is most likely confined to Rio. This further implies that he's not all that close with Uncle Aaron, who seems to take care of the Morales family, but, based off of Rio's interaction with him, seems to still command some fearful respect (as opposed to unconditional support / true family vibes). So, on Earth-42, P-Miles is this loner kid, who lost his father, hangs out primarily with his mother, and maybe does the occasional odd-job with/for his uncle. And now enter S-Miles, maybe a lil awkward, but defo extroverted enough to befriend P-Miles, after he breaks down his walls of distrust. I am very excited for the 3rd movie. (ofc, it could also just mean that P-Miles mainly hangs out with hispanic kids, but that seems a less interesting choice for this movie to make)
@thisisabackupemail2264 Жыл бұрын
I just take it as the fact that his father's gone so the exposure to that accent (as you DO pick up accents and ways to pronounce or short-hand words from close bodies) is gone, and so he's more leaning into interactions with his mom. Leaning into the Hispanic part of himself, but could be another metaphor for how he's unbalanced, leaning on one half of his identity rather than balanced like how 'our' Miles is trying to be.
@ACAB-l2d Жыл бұрын
@@thisisabackupemail2264 yeah, but that's what I'm saying. As a small child we're influenced by our parents' speech, but by the time we're teens, our peers will have played a dominant role in the formation of our dialect for years already. So the only way P-Miles is still influenced by Rio's dialect is because apart from his missing father figure, he also lacks friends that would push his accent toward NY and away from hispanic.
@SultanOfSwing22 Жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with this, I love this detail and I think you've hit the nail on the head as to the main reasons behind his accent. There's also the (potential) factor that Miles-42 probably doesn't miss his Spanish lessons at school like Miles-1610 does.

It didn't get a mention, but I love that once Miles has that sinking feeling of being in the wrong universe and freezing at the sight of Uncle Aaron, the movie gives us that tiny moment of comfort between them. Rio and Aaron know he's not their Miles, commenting on his hair being different, but even Aaron allows Miles to give him a hug, unknowingly reminding Miles of who he lost and why he needs to keep fighting. Sure, Aaron doesn't know what he has given this alternate Miles and he will be leading him back to Prowler Miles to enact their nefarious amd nebulous shenanigans onto him, but I still find beauty in that little moment where Miles can just melt back into a hug with Aaron, however short lived that comfort may be.

The speech from Miles' Mom was in the trailer and I go to the movies all the time but even watching the trailer, I would break down into tears, because not only is Miles rare among Spider-folk for having both of his parents alive and well and supportive, it really hits home for me. My parents loved me for 18 years... and then they didn't. They left me alone, in the cold and dark, to die. No one looks out for me but me, and he has such a blessing with his parents and the story is also about how such blessings can be taken away. These movies take the superficial nature of most superhero flicks and burn it to ash... and a colorful pheonix rises, reminding us of what heroes truly mean to us... They bring us hope.

I am surprised you didn't point out that Pavitr's girlfriend and police captain both got saved because he essentially had "two cakes" as in another spider-man to help him. I kind of like the theory that what destroyed Miguel's universe wasn't breaking cannon events, but an incursion as described in the MCU as multiple copies of the same person existing in the same universe for too long (perhaps that universes' original Miguel was secretly alive the whole time). It would mean that Miguel is tragically doubling down on his mistake by gathering so many Peter Parkers into one place rather than fixing his mistake like he thinks he is. And the Spider-Hub, which he created to be the tool to fix the multiverse, is instead a ticking time bomb.
@MEWtiful Жыл бұрын
Also Mayday only exists because Peter B. traveled across dimensions and met Miles. She's living proof that crossing dimensions and canon divergence doesn't always result in a universe being destroyed
@FFfanboyX Жыл бұрын
Personally I was at first justifying it as-dead!Miggy's Gabriella was supposed to be motivated to become Spider-Woman by that incident, then later got involved in Avengers-level time travel shenanigans to change the past; Miguel takes his own place, that Gabriella never becomes Spider-Woman 21something, the past isn't saved, that future gets undone. More recently I figure-in the ItSV post-credits scene, about a year ago, Miguel's original goober is noted as the FIRST autonomous multiversal travel. So possibly it's a hardware issue he's unaware of; whatever radiation/field/energy it uses to prevent glitching is downright hazardous in a foreign universe. So Nueva York is fine, because the Watches themselves are all 'native' to that universe, but too many Spider-Men showing up in foreign universes at the same time? And you know that the Spiders considered their juniors not losing their Gwen Stacys or Uncle Bens or Captains was an 'all hands on deck' situation, while Anomalies look to only get followed by one or two Spiders at a time. So every time a hundred Spiders descended to save a Ben, Gwen, or Captain that universe developed a big ol' quantum black hole, Miguel noted that these events in some form were happening everywhere, and assumed that meant they were structural somehow. So he said stop interfering, took the quantum holes not appearing as 'evidence', did a lot of investigation for other events that 'always' happened and added them to the list, and then forbade everyone from preventing those incidents. Basically, the problem is that Miguel is ascribing far more value to a common pattern than he should when it should have occured to him that the wristwatches capable of blowing pinholes in reality and holding off a universe's "immune response" to outsiders might have side effects. Well, in the comics he is a geneticist, not a physicist... Or I could just favor that theory because it means a thousand genius Parkers can descend on Miguel's work to fix the problem, and we get a happy ending without having to figure out what actually is causing universes to collapse. Because even if Canon is wrong, and I really doubt Beyond is going to end with Miles letting his dad die and accepting fate or watching his universe fall apart, that doesn't change that SOMETHING collapsed at least one universe.

I adore the scene where Gwen and her dad come to terms with each other at the end. The increasingly abstract art is honestly my favorite part of the whole movie. I've seen a lot of interpretations, but for me, the reason the art becomes less legible and increasingly abstract and distant is because the world is fading away, nothing else matters to either of them in that moment. The only thing they're focusing on in the entire world is how desperate they each are to be loved by the other, so everything else fades to the point of abstraction. God I love this movie

I adore this movie. A few more fun notes! 1) Pavitr also seems to be almost ribbon-dancing when he's moving on his webs, 2) Miguel being Irish is a very fun touch, because in Irish folklore, there are changelings - fae who take the place of people and live their lives for them. He became the changeling in his own story. And 3) my friend made a really good point about Miles and anomalies: the glitches only happen when an *outside* influence causes a change in the canon. IE Miles being the one to save Gayaitra's father, or Miguel entering another universe and covering up his death. But there were no glitches when Gwen caused her father to quit being a police captain and, as a result, broke canon.
@johnthomason9980 Жыл бұрын
And even then, 3 isn't even always true, because the entire reason Miles got his powers was because a spider from ANOTHER DIMENSION bit him, which you would think would cause a canon collapse of some kind, but instead canon SHIFTED by having Chris Pine Spidey die and pass on the mantle to Miles. It didn't cause a collapse like it did with Pavitr or Miguel. I suspect that either Miguel is just wrong about the canon, or he's lying and we're not getting the whole story in regards to what's going on
@fluffhead6757 Жыл бұрын

To reiterate Briandoesart's point - Pavitr's dimension is destroyed from Spot's collider, _not_ displacing the canon event. Visuals are a huge thing in the spider-verse movies, so I'm surprised more people don't point out that Miguel's body jacking universe dying looks radically different to what we see happen there. It looks like the glitching, quick and more colourful, instead of the slow, creeping black void of, say, a black hole
@thisisabackupemail2264 Жыл бұрын
@@fluffhead6757 Depending how closely they follow comic Spider 2099, Miguel's 'vampire' fangs are due to him being an anomaly. Sci-fi genesplice due to an agitated coworker trying to shove him in the machine to kill him. This movie does a great job of showing solidarity within communities & learning what a real ally looks like. Hobie & Spider-Byte only had short interactions with Miles yet choose to help him when the literal spider world is against him. Peter & Gwen know Miles yet were convinced to abandon AND attack him. For me it speaks to how even if people say they are allies at times it is conditional. Even though Gwen questioned Miguel she wasn't willing to fully stand up for Miles until she was isolated as well. While Peter's guilt becomes too much & he seeks to redeem himself. I believe this movie is just as much about Gwen as it is about Miles. It is important to note that while part of Gwen's journey is her "coming out" & accepting herself it is also about her learning about what a true ally & friend looks like at the most critical of times.

One thing I love is that Miguel accepts Gwen only when she says "I dont know how to fix this" the same feeling that Miguel probably felt back then when he broke his canon event. Gwen on the ledge, I was hoping someone would talk about it! I love the difference between them too, how Gwen anchors webs and pulls herself down (up?) whereas Miles, hanging from one hand, just pulls himself into a sitting position. It also mirrors with Prowler!Miles hanging from the beam before he hops down, which is just yet another clue to his identity before he gets revealed. And Hobie giving Miles the initial advice, but when Miles seems stuck he gives that subtle advice again, but it's only after giving Miles a few seconds to try on his own. To me, it looks like he only gives the advice after MIles starts to freak out a little, and it feels so sweet that Hobie was there to help him. Also I don't know if he actually says this, but my subtitles say 'Little man. Peter Pan. Palms' when Hobie reminds Miles, and that just makes it funnier.

Something I wanted to add to what makes Hobie so good in his intro (that I'm absolutely stealing from schnee) is how when he's describing himself he starts off with something flashy that grabs our attention and makes us assume he's just "The Cool Guy Miles is Competing With" then immediately follows it with something more punk like some audio sleight of hand. "When I'm not putting on shows" but then "and staging unpermitted political action." "I hate labels, I'm not a hero" comes off as trying to humble brag but then he immediately explains why he probably hates the Spiderverse HQ "calling yourself a hero makes you a self mythologizing narcissitic autocrat. Come on!"
