Blood spray like that makes a common appearance in Japanese media (anime, film) because of an accident with a high pressure hose used for a blood spray effect in an old Japanese film (Sanjuro) that was kept in because the director liked the mistake. It is unrealistic, but film makers still like to use it to reference that old film.

It was over the top in both the fighting and the blood but I guess it makes it more exciting and entertaining to watch even humorous being that over the top
