I'm not sure that they made the connection that Arthur's mother Penny allowed her boyfriend to abuse her (supposedly) adopted son to the point that he suffered a traumatic brain injury that went untreated for a while. This was the root cause of his mental conditions. It was this learning this knowledge, not just the fact that he was adopted, that made Arthur kill his mother.
