I think I have it worked out... Splinter sells crack washed down the sewers, and he sells it to shredder. Then, with shredder being all high on crack, he does illegal crimes and causes mayhem, which he uses to fund his project and buy more crack. And, since the turtles need money from him, they never really put an end to him, they just stop his random crimes, and shredders just too high to really notice. So, it just revolves in a circle, and that's how they make their money!

Splinter forced turtles to pay money for his ninjitsu lessons. You can't sell stuff on NY streets without the knowledge of elder martial arts (as Splinter said), so the deal was fair enough. Don was repairing broken junk, Mike was selling it on the streets, Raph did all the talkings with competitors and Leo... well Leo ruled the process. And then the whole mess with foot soldiers and Shreder started... Leo just wasn't supposed to find Krang's tech stuff that been lost during the transportation.

I thought I could get some logical explanations on how the turtles get their income, but that idea of crack and pocketing some of the stolen money is simply contradictory to what they stand by. Coins going down the sewers just won't cut it either, because there simply won't be enough of these to buy them all that pizza, plus electricity and all those gizmos Donatello makes. Sure TMNT is just a cartoon, but heroes like Superman, Batman and Spiderman have alter-egos that can fend for themselves in the real world. Splinter may have saved up something when he was still human, but that wouldn't have been sufficient to support himself and four 'sons' for over a decade.

+squala first off all lets talk about who they are originally the turtles were cold blooded murders trained by splinter for revenge and only revenge but they were eventually made noble heroes. as for not having enough from coins you are absolutely wrong. there is literally tonnes and tonnes of coins dropped on a regular basis. all they would have to do is rig up a net that can collect the coins. that get washed into the sewer as for the machinery they have Donatello makes it from junk collected from junk yards

everyone knows splinter came from Hamato Yoshi (his former owner) who was a ninja which means he was in a very dangerous job and assuming he died on the job splinter now collects his social security money to pay off all costs for the turtles. (._.)

@OttoMotos I think the whole point is 'plausible deniability', the turtles are probably none the wiser as they have to go off and fight shredder most of the time or watch t.v and eat pizza...splinter probably keeps the ugly secret of his crack selling from them to protect them and occasionally asks Donatello in to fix the 'machines' every once in a while, without going into too much detail. Maybe the turtles just grow weed? I mean listen to Michealangelo! They always seem to have the munchies!
