I was the lead truck driver on the US/Canada "And Justice for All" tour back about 1989. The band had decided they wanted to play in every state in the US. That put them in some unusual venues in Delaware and New Hampshire. When they played in Nome, Alaska the sound system caught on fire. The crowd thought it was part of the show and the crew extinguished it pretty quickly so no harm no foul? Curiously enough, Hector Lizardi, formerly Billy Graham the evangelist's accountant, was on the tour. While we were eating sushi off 8 mile road in North Detroit, Hector asked Lars what he wanted to do when he grew up. Without missing a beat, Lars said, "I wanna be an accountant because they can steal from everybody."

In 35 years of tour logistics, I've never seen the sound, instruments and stage gear travel at the same pace as the artists. It's usually far ahead of the band and is a constant game of leapfrog after each venue. I've NEVER seen an ancillary tour member sit down and dine with the band either, rarely they would hang out with sound and lighting engineers, but a truck driver?

I worked 23 years as a concert sound tech. As the person in final control of sound system volume, you never let the opening acts have control of overall volume. If the headliner isn't above the rest, the engineer has failed his job.

Lars gets it. He is a killer drummer who knows his songs and his craft. He then and always has his kit set up in advance before the stringed instruments come out of their cases. He's ready to play. And is made to wait while guitarists, bassist tune up, and change guitars. Patience beyond measure, yet he gets the brunt of non-musicians negative comments. It's hard to play drums and you have to be fit. I saw all this as a guitarist and musician 45 years. RESPECT.

I worked the first big Metallica tour and a guy called Big Mick was the auditorium sound mixer. I also worked as a sound tech and I thought big Mick was trying to get the raspy guitar sound down enough to put together a decent mix. Unfortunately, the frequencies he suppressed made the bass less distinct. IMHO

Sorry for bad English.

I'm confused about James needing the Flying V body for Blackened? James was a always an Explorer guy, definitely back in that era. Kirk was the Flying V and Strat style guy. James never played Blackened on a Flying V back in the day. 🤔

James has a boot fetish. I was a truck driver on the "And Justice for All" tour around 1992. I've chatted with James and Lars often but James latest purchase of fancy cowboy boots was always a fertile topic for conversation.

lol, "you can sell that to the chili peppers." hetfield is such an intense person, as so many successful musicians are, i'm convinced you have to have a "i'll drive thru concrete if i have to." mentality to succeed in this business, talent helps but it ain't enough.
