I have always gone to sleep late, even as a child. I do not function well in mornings. My normal sleep cycle starts at about 4-5 am and waking up at around 12-1 pm. My meds, however, cause me to fall asleep much earlier but I still lag in the mornings. I hate mornings, absolutely hate them. As I said, it has been this way for as long as I can remember.

You make it sound so simple. I have severe delayed sleep phase disorder coupled with hypersomnia. Even when I am doing well I can go to sleep at midnight and still wake up late. As a previous commenter said, mornings are torture. I am not productive at all. I have been known to fall asleep at the kitchen table, on buses, at work and in classes. I too have tried light boxes, medication etc. even timed sockets rigged to electric blankets and vibrators to cook myself awake! If I allow my body to naturally sleep, I can go right around the clock within a week. It really screws up your life and I have lost countless jobs because of it. It is a tragic disorder for anybody to suffer.

I am wide awake at 9:00 pm and can't fall aseep. No matter how early I got to bed, I cant fall asleep at the early time and I struggle waking up at 6:30 am. I am so sick of people telling me I'm lazy. I am so sleepy in the early morning. glad I found this!! i'm seeing a sleep doctor soon.

I also have trouble forming sentences & I’m very clumsy & stiff. There are times I don’t even remember driving to work. I drag allll day but then at night I’m wide awake! I go to the laundromat at 9pm, grocery shop at midnight, pay bills at 2am, things people get done during the day, I’m doing late at night! During the day I’m late for everything, sometimes because I don’t account for traffic etc (roads are clear at night!) When I lay in bed my mind races & I think of hundreds of random questions and scenarios. I will catch myself googling answers to every question I think of. Watching movies, reading. I can go to bed at 10 but can’t fall asleep. I have to keep myself busy until my body just shuts down on its own around 1 or 2am. I wake up at least twice with urge to pee but I can’t move so I hold it all night until I can’t take it anymore then get up. My friends and family know not to call or bother me on Saturdays until about 4pm. I use Saturday to catch up on all the sleep I missed and if left alone I can easily sleep until 2 or 3pm. I’ve been called “lazy” “irresponsible” for as long as I can remember. Even though I am Super productive during the night. I cleaned my bathroom, bought groceries, cooked tonight’s dinner, organized closet, mopped kitchen floor all between 9pm and 2am. I literally didn't go to sleep at all one night (I finished a book, started another, watched KZbin, and played minecraft all night because I couldn't fall asleep) and fell asleep at 9am for 3 hours. Usually, I fall asleep between 12-2am, and if I'm not forced awake, I can sleep until 2pm. I'm always really tired in the morning, whether I get 3, 7, or 12 hours of sleep. I'm never productive during the day and I'm always tired. I can't form proper sentences for a while after I wake up, and I'm kind of dizzy. But at night I'm fully awake. It sucks Edit: wow. 4:50am. Stupid morning people, deciding the world’s schedule while we were all asleep... jokes aside, I guess I’m lucky. I’m definitely a night owl. Past midnight is my prime. But with classes, I constantly have to get up at about 7. Not that early, I know, but I’ve had to do earlier before. Have and can. I usually run on around six hours of sleep, which I know isn’t ideal but it’s workable. And my sleep schedule is super flexible. I can spend a week going to bed at four in the morning then go to bed at midnight the next night and be back on my school schedule. I guess it’s a good thing I can change my schedule so quickly, since it makes it less damaging to be on my severe night schedule one weekends.

Raven the Dragon Most people in this world aren’t morning people. So I don’t know we still do this shit. Who wants to go shopping or a doctor at 7am? No one I know. Trying to fix my cycle throughout my life has been not far away from certain forms of torture. I was beyond happy one neurologist finally said “ you have DSPD, you better start adjusting your life around your natural sleep cycle instead of continuing this fight to adjust your sleep to what comes unnatural to your body”. I couldn’t at that time because my daughter was too young to go to school by herself etc so I had to hold out for some years still. But I felt HEARD and validated finally. Finally someone who understood I wasn’t talking out of my rear-end, being dramatic.. So when I finally could take up an evening job and let my body sleep when it wanted, my life improved so much in so many ways. No more depression no more muscle spasms from sleep deprivation for a longg time. Things are not ideal still because everybody outside gets up and becomes noisy when I want to sleep haha.. But once I fall asleep I do get a full rest overall. So happy that this issue is finally getting some more serious recognition for what it is. It’s horrible when you’re being shamed for something you can not help. I wish anyone who’s been struggling with sleep the best nights or days rest ever and may you find ways to adjust your life to your needs soonest 😘
@fuzzylogics1392 жыл бұрын
And as the doctor starts naming the treatments I feel so much frustration rising, lol! Really, for some people the only solution is probably to adjust to what their body is dictating. But I will say I’ve had this issue from childhood and all those therapies have only added on to my problems at the time. I see this video is 8 years old though so I hope you’ve advanced your knowledge about those extreme cases, too. Some people need to just build their life around their sleep cycle, not the other way around. 💁♀️

I'm 28 this year and my problem is that no matter how hard I try my body always reverts back to the 6am-1pm sleep cycle. I have worked in various industries and tried different sleep patterns to see if I can change my sleeping cycle by habit, but it just never works. The most successful and productive job I've ever had was when I worked a night job from 6pm-5am, it was the first time that not only did I feel full of energy for the entire time I was awake but my body was also getting healthier and stronger. Can I go to sleep at 12am? Yes, with a lot of effort and preparation beforehand. But if I wake up at anytime before 1pm I am completely useless. Doesn't matter how much sleep I've had, my brain quite literally can't think 🤷♀️

I really hope I get to fix my pattern. I want it to be flexible like before where I could stay up til 4 am but still not screw up my entire being.

Due to my own poor habits, I go through phases of virtual timezone-flips that last upwards of a month or longer. At worst these phases encompass sleeping at around midday and waking up at 8-10pm, though there's never really a consistent sleeping or waking time. Going to bed earlier doesn't work, so instead I flail between desperate attempts at staying up all day and stagnant stretches of submission, until something pulls me back into the real world.

I wake up at 7 pm and i stay up until 3 pm. I only get 4 hours of sleep *(from 3 pm to 7 pm)* but it felt like a lot honestly, idk why 4 hours felt enough. I stay up until 7 pm to 3 pm because of school, 7 am is when schools starting and then we get dismissed at 3 pm, and then i sleep until 7 pm and then stay up until 3 pm again. Now what do i do while staying up at 7 pm to 7 am you may ask? I eat dinner at 8 pm and I brush my teeth and do my skin care routine at 10 pm and then *(from 10 pm to 6 am)* I just stay up lay in bed, watching a movie, playing games or sometimes I just do my homeworks early because I have so many free time and its quiet and its really nice. (6:30 am to 7 am) I eat breakfast and do my morning routine. I have no problems of staying awake because I always feel so motivated but when others look at my schedule they get shocked and say that’s unhealthy. My body seems to adapt to the schedule really well though, Im a healthy 13 year old girl, i have never felt symptoms of eating problems, blood loss, brain problems, memory loss or loss of appetite. Go to church as do some meditation in 4:00pm-8:00pm you can try . It is not becuass it the circadian rhythms . It because you adjust your brain too much to be awake that it got used too. Partly is too how much you brain work to get back on track. Like as child listening o when a parent want to give a limit . Prob lábil you lacked that when it was time for yoy survival you didn’t get to tell youself stop working those hours . maybe is the way you think have to do but also Holy Spirit temporarily keeping you awake , or the devil . Or youself . If people don’t limit you , you have to find a limit . It will help for your survival mode especially sleep . Maybe you brain is not productivity enough in some areas where it has to do with sleep .

Maybe mine is more complex, this didn't help at all. I have always had strange sleep patterns, and after the removal of a tumor from my frontal lobe in 2012, I sleep both excessively and irradically...tried the lights, melatonin, sleep meds, stimulants, everything in the book...

When you really get trouble is when you have a married couple with completely different chronotypes. Either you end up more like roommates on totally different schedules, or else one person's sleep disorder causes the other to develop one, too. Speaking from experience, this is not fun. The one thing that doctors generally miss-and sleep doctors are no exception-is to look at the cause. If you do not know why a person's sleep hormones are messed up, then you don't know for sure that something like a light box or melatonin will work. In my husband's case, he actually has a genetic mutation that causes his circadian rhythm to be, in colloquial terms, broken. He gets tired during the day, is awake at night, has irregular wake/sleep times, and even when he's tired and it's time for bed, he needs to take melatonin to fall asleep (and a massage from me is also usually necessary because he also has trouble with anxiety that leads him to be very tense). I think he basically produces very little melatonin naturally, no matter what time of day or night it is. So, if your body is not producing melatonin according to the solar cycle like it should, what is causing that? Very likely a sleep doctor won't be able to tell that, because there are multiple possible causes (and you may have more than one problem at the same time), and at least some of these will be quite outside of the doctor's training. Some might be nutritional, some behavioural, some genetic, some environmental, and there's always the possibility of other health problems contributing as well. Those who suffer from sleep disorders need to be their own advocates and do their own research. Not reading a few blog posts or watching a few videos like this, but real, solid research. Read books, look at scientific studies, check all the angles. Give your whole life a critical review. Is there _anything_ you could be doing to make the situation worse, or is there anything you could do to improve it (beyond melatonin and light boxes)? Could even your latitude be part of the problem? Leave no stone unturned! I think the chronotype thing is kind of a lie. It's true in that you might have a natural tendency toward being nocturnal, but that doesn't make it "natural" to be so. That's like saying being prone to constipation means constipated is a natural state for you and that's okay. No, it's not. My husband is prone to constipation. It is probably genetic, since his father and grandmother have/had the same problem. But anyone knows it's unhealthy to be constipated. It is a known fact that the circadian rhythm is supposed to be regulated by the sun. If yours is not, or is reversed, that indicates that there is something internally wrong, just as surely as something would be wrong if you didn't feel hungry when it's time to eat, but started feeling hungry after eating. It might be genetic, like it is with my husband. But if it is epigenetic, it can still be changed. It may also be caused by other hormones being out of whack, which could come back to other seemingly unrelated causes. There may even be causes as simple as a vitamin D deficiency (being the "sunshine vitamin", this is also connected to the circadian rhythm, just like melatonin). That's why I say "leave no stone unturned". Just because the standard methods like light boxes don't work, doesn't mean all hope is lost. It just means you have to dig deeper to find the cause(s) before you can resolve it.

Much to do with the endocrine system. But there could be other causes as well. I don’t know why doctors don’t do thorough endocrine analysis on all patients. Most tests are not too expensive, although some are tedious and complex. It is crazy how one off track gland in your body could mess everything up in your body and brain. I have uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. My blood sugar is high in the night. My heartbeat is fast and possibly my cortisol is up as well. My doctor wouldn’t even order a cortisol and c-peptide test for me! I suspect that I have adrenal fatigue because I barely could move in the morning. I am a lot more active in the evening and throughout the night. I miss on every thing I care about. I tried many things, but something is really persistent and mysterious.

I sleep walk at times and once waking up near a highway one night; which makes me not want to live by myself. I tried all that stuff too (meletonan valarian root) and nothing works. It's so bad for me I'd have to find part time jobs at night, cause I never know when I'll sleep 12hrs out of nowhere and never hear the alarm clock. Its sad for me cause I really want to run a business and be successful in life.

I've been going to sleep 6am and waking up at 2pm almost my entire life. But now as I study I can't go on like this. Sometimes I have to wake up earlier than usual and it destroys not only the day in itself, but the next day too as I can't function properly with a small amount of sleep than I used to. I'm wondering what I'm going to do to beat this. My music classes are starting this week and my life will become a nightmare if I don't change it quickly.

Unfortunately here we have another doctor recommending CBT for a circadian disorder. No mention of how harmful that is for so many. No mention of the struggles that severe DSPS/sighted N24 go through to get diagnosis. No discussion of real diagnosis technique (dim light melatonin onset over time or via urine). No discussion of melatonin agonists and MT 2 versus MT1. I can go on. It's an embarrassment that a prestige institution would have such a substandard understanding of CRSDs

Literally if the sun is up I am tired. If the sun is down I am awake. I have managed here and there to condition myself to be awake during the day, but Ive never managed to condition myself to be sleepy during the night. Its pretty much impossible because while you can always force yourself to be awake, you can never force yourself to sleep. That's why circadian rhythm disorders are incurable for the most part.

Blue light technology is at major default for everyone's lack of sleep or lack of proper quality sleep. Public education truly took an psychological toll on its students as well. And then it's the workforce, and further on that does. Very unfortunately so. It is normal, in my view, that if you sleep irregularly, you'd awake irregularly, or if your body is accustomed to such improper sleeping habits, it may become regulated to adapt to this behavior. That's personally my experience, I'm not sure exactly if that's classified as a diagnosis but, it is a common occurrence with many people. It's the high cortisol, and less than enough melatonin hormonal imbalance, unfortunately. I personally believe this may be at fault for my acne issues. And 2 full weeks of proper sleep felt amazing, beneficial, and yet still slightly improved but not completely healed away my acne. I suppose it needs more time(?) lol, it's a true struggle. Thank you for the information nonetheless. Treatment for this, seems to be radically choosing to reduce the blue light tech (protective glasses & turning cell phones off or downloading a blue light filter- both preferably-- as to not use the phones as night). Taking Magnesium salt baths or warm showers at night, Magnesium foot sprays/4x, sleeping in dark rooms, preferably good temperature & the less sound, the better. And just sleeping according to the right circadian rhythm or sleep cycle pattern, more often.* I.e if you're dehydrated, just start drinking more water & never stop. If you're sleep deprived, sleep accordingly, and never stop. Realistically this can't always happen, but the more we do so, the better our life's vitality, health & function may be. It's really in common sense, and it's unfortunately so, cause blue light is everywhere we go. Invest in good prescription lenses or shielding eyewear - eyebuydirect.com .

I'm a 63 year old female with lifelong delayed sleep phase "disorder" (normal trait difference). The reason I have been able to stay so much healthier, stronger, and more energetic than most women my age (I still do heavy, fast-paced warehouse work with ease, even though I'm only 5'3" and weigh less than 120 lbs.) is because I have NEARLY ALWAYS worked on afternoon and evening shifts. Which reminds me... Poor Robin Williams...He was a natural night owl who gave himself Lewy Body Dementia because he ALWAYS forced himself to arrive on movie sets "at the crack of dawn" solely for the sake of saving "filming" (now digital recording?) expenses for lazy non-working producers (NOT directors, who DO work) who themselves ALWAYS SLEEP AS LATE AS THEY WANT!!!!!! P.S. I KNOW it
