Circe was done so well that I even cried for the lioness' death. It's deeply moving and Miller's writing is indeed up there.

The great thing about Circe was that she was given a story and a background, when she ist painted mostly as this evil witch who does bad things to good men. She as viewed as an outcast and monster because she wasnt a like "good greek wife" basically. Another think about greek mythology in general is the fact that gods and heros are "more" than human- they have more strentgh but also their emotions and actions are "more" dramatic and exaggerated.

Song of Achellies is soooooooo good! You really need to read it. I made my friend read it and she said it ruined her for all other books. I think Miller's writing style is very specific. I really loved that this was a story about Circe and we got to know her.

I read circe during the summer! Thank you for talking about it♥️♥️. Funny story. When I first picked circe up, i read the title wrong. I thought the story was called circle. I was so confused in the beginning of the story😂. Love your channel so much! Love from Norway💙🇳🇴

What i liked about the song of achilles was Patroklos pov. It would have been to easy to outshine him and push him aside, but so he stayed main character. Also it air brushed achilles as a character in a way that made sense.

I was really bothered by the fact that almost all of circe’s decisions seemed to revolve around men. i was so happy when she was thriving and independent, but then that just disappeared.

if you are interested in more female voices from greek mythology i recommend "tenthousand ships" focussing on the female characters of the trojan war (but wouldn´t make sense if you havent read the illiad) and "the silence of the girls" the trojan war from Briseis (achilles slave) pov, telling her story and the life at the greek camp.

I always hated how Medea was did dirty like that. The story of Jason and the golden fleece is older than Homer, so it dates back to at least 800s BCE, with some scholars thinking it dates back to the 1300s BCE. The play Medea is from the 400s BCE, so at least 400 years (if not 900 years) after the original, and was poorly received at the time. But over time it has been adopted as canon. Originally the story ends with Jason and Medea redeeming themselves for killing Medea's brother in their escape, and presumably, Jason and Medea getting Jason's throne back and them living happily ever after. Then, Euripides comes along and writes a play where actually Jason and Medea are exiled and Jason decides to dump Medea for a younger hotter princess and in retaliation, Medea murders her and Jason's kids. It would be like if someone today made a movie retconning the end of a Shakespearean play or Dante's The Divine Comedy that is trashed by critics but 2000 years from now is universally accepted as the "true" ending.

I have a book recommendation Rebel Spirits by Lois Ruby it’s kind of like a YA a tiny bit but I read it last year and it is my all time favorite book ever it so good words cannot explain. It’s like romance meets history meets paranormal. It’s just the best book I have ever read. I really really really want you to read it! It’s so good I could go on and on.

I agree that I want Madeline Miller to do all these female retellings but they HAVE to be better than Circe. The women cannot just be rooted in a man’s story.
