NOTICE THE LINE GOES IN--ON THE BARB SIDE. It really, really matters. Think of that line as a straight pin, as the line (the pin)is pulled straight, it forces the circle hook to CLOSE. If you went in on the other side, it OPENS the hook. My first circle hook trip was with a guide who did not know this. All day, we fished circle hooks for Tarpon, every fish came off, or was never hooked. Later, looking at the circle hook tie, I could see he came in on the wrong side--this guy in this video, tied it right.

Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

In some States in the USA a legal catch is that the hook is set from inside / out of the mouth , not the outside / in..

When I've gotten a circle hook to set I've landed every fish, but I loose 2/3 of the catfish that take the bait with a circle hook, so I just use kahle for catfish. The circle hooks do much less damage and when the do set they seem to hold on tighter and are easy to remove. Trout have a better shaped mouth for the circle hook

i caught my first Blue fin tuna with a size 2 circle hook small hooks for big fish on live bait for when the fish are hook + line shy no need to set the hook either just let them eat it for a second or two and then reel down on them

Snagging is intentionally foul hooking a fish , a fish hooked behind the gills is considered foul hooked the fish hooked on the outside of the mouth isn't (this definition changes per locale and enforcement so check with your local reg). This is the same as a bead rig used for trout fishing and considered as the best for them to aviod gut hooking!

Also the reason is that circle hooks aren't set the fish does set it but not with movement, it happens when the fish swallows the bait that the circle hook will catch in the mouth and hook the fish then the angler feels the fish, tightens the line and reels the fish in but with a fly fish will realize it is fake and spit it out before the hook is swallowed and catches.

As explained in the video, the are to properly set the circle hook is minimum and if we set the hook with the hook inside the mouth the hook /fly will come out of the fish's mouth however with the circle hook on the outside of the fish's mouth has a lot of suitable egde to turn and anchor! When you set the hook the circle hook will engage. You have two alternatives you could make an articulated fly with a longer trail and put a circle hook instead of a j hook or cut off the fly from where the hook bends /gape of the hook and attach a circle hook like a dropshot rig

No, this is all wrong. This is exactly the same as foul hooking and more harmful to sport fish. Just considering the fact when setting the hook like a regular J hook, that abrupt force with the circle snagging on the lower or upper lip can cause serious damage. In California, any hook not engaged from the inside of the game fish's mouth is considered foul hooking thus is illegal.

Foul hooking or not its a fucking fish. What should be considered illegal is fishing for the sport. People hook the fish and release them just for fun. Catch and release is not just a sport, it is a practice. If you only fished when you are hungry, you wouldn't acquire the necessary skills to catch fish when you need it. certain areas are not abundant with fish and require a lot of skill to catch. Also what is more cruel, catching an animal and releasing it or catching an animal, imprisoning it and breeding them into health problems, all so you can have a animal as a friend. If I had to guess, I'd say you're a cat person?
