A couple big points to take from this video! Firstly always have a dive buddy to watch your back, shallow water blackouts are even more of a threat than sharks and without a dive buddy you have no chance of survival. Secondly, the sharks wanted the fish not the diver, I see this all the time, WELL DONE on keeping your cool and holding onto it! It teaches them to stop harassing divers as it doesn’t get them food. Thirdly and finally, when approached by sharks show signs of aggression (poking them in this case), it slows them down and makes them more cautious giving you more time to control the situation. All in all exceptionally done! Good job guys, enjoyed the video! Btw studying marine biologist and swim with sharks almost weekly 🤙

Here in Hawaii we shore dive all the time, but we always have a basket attached to a bodyboard on a 100 ft line or so to swim up and dump the fish in to keep them outta the water, and yes, dive partners are important. we usually go in 2-3s. Great video, glad Riley is safe!

Riley, get some neodymium magnets and wear them on yourself when you dive. There's something about those rare earth magnets which sharks detect with their hyper electrical sensors and it is repellent to them.

100% correct! In 1972 I went on a morning's spearfishing off Nassau, Bahamas with the then chief pilot of Bahamas Air, Tommy Bethel, a fellow pilot, with my late brother and myself manoeuvring their Boston Whaler skiff to pick up the speared fish as soon as they'd caught each one. No swimming around with struggling speared fish on a stringer for them, asking for trouble. That got me into scuba diving which I've pursued for over 45 years all over the world and have been in the water with every major so-called "man-eating" predatory shark known to science. Only "attack" I've experienced came from an inquisitive juvenile 15 foot whale shark two years ago while snorkelling at the Tubbataha Reefs in the Philippines which made two passes at me, the second actually bumping me head on and I've video to prove it!. If that had been a similar sized Tiger shark-Goodnight Vienna! I've been watching your posts for several years now and hate to say this, but you're a father now and your widow wouldn't thank you for deserting them for the sake of a fish meal, no matter how fresh and tasty. One lone spear fisherman and five circling sharks are not good odds. Elayna's concerns are right. I appreciate it may not always be possible Riley, but if you haven't got boat cover at least try & dive with a buddy to watch your back, otherwise stick to line fishing.
@jaeljade36095 жыл бұрын
@@nigelhaines1297 I bet in 72 there were a lot more sharks. 100 million are killed every year and I bet that's on the low side. Riley shouldn't have been alone, but he did a damn good job protecting himself under pressure.

Nah, if he was being attacked he'd likely be dead now. I don't like the watering-down of the term "attack" because it perpetuates the fearmongering around sharks. If a shark shows interest, news outlets call it attack for clicks and ratings. Let's not get down to that level for no reason. The sharks also wanted the fish, it was foolish to spear fish alone without boat and that far of a swim.

I learned while shore diving in Mexico to use a float made from a small trailer tire inner tube with a net lashed to it. It gives you a place to put the catch and allows you to carry on spear fishing. It can also be abandoned to the sharks . I’d attach it on a clip around the waist freeing both hands. The sit on top kayaks are the ideal set up, giving you a way to get out of the water. I love spear fishing I’ve done it all my life even in northern Canada in full wetsuit spear fishing for Pike and Pickerel in cold freshwater lakes.
