I think I like the fun stuff for sure, but I really carefully watch any of the work videos. The splicing is of interest to me. I thought the way the rope winds around the splicing you did is really cool! Sailing Uma had a video where he was splicing. I went to youtube right after that to learn how.

Love these what work videos! I helped a friend about a Beneteau with some rogging and I thought it was a stinking nightmare. I can definitely appreciate your patience because the rigging isn't simplistic to say the least. Love the content continue producing these videos. It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it. Easier write a check if you have it but when you don't you're forced to figure it out. I even hate whipping rope! Kudos to Bill & Sierra! You guys are a lot like me with respect to being predisposed to embarking on a mission of "endless upgrades, scheduled/preventative maintenance and improvements" of your vessel and home. I also wanted to say that you did a great job with the task of securing the new dinghy motor and discouraging the crackheads from further piracy of your gear. I was really hoping that it was a April 1st thing and was sorry to confirm the worst. I was cringing when you were pulling on that concrete light pole, but the Dodge sounds awesome. I think I would have tied up to the tree. Concrete doesn't like to flex. I'm glad there was no drama. You're right, though. We do like these boat-work videos.

Those light poles look sturdy but they are made to fall when hit by a car. Cut a car tire in half and it will make a cushion for a tree that will not leave a mark.

One thing I’ve always wondered about is the bottom ends on those shrouds which are also subject to uv exposure and especially chafe/wear as part of everyday usage, Seems like they should be covered, to, in order to protect them. Would be pretty salty/old school to put some leather boots around them from the deck level up to the point where it has a cover on the line.

I think Jetty was hoping the deadeye was a bone... All the science I've read says UHMWPE that the core of Dyneema and Spectra ropes are made from experience serious loss in strength of the fibers exposed to UV unless the fibers are coated with a UV dye, UV and abrasion coating, or jacket material. Dux (SK75) is impregnated with what they call Durapur that I believe adds UV and abrasion resistance, but I'd always add a jacket material like polyester where possible.

I read that Bernard Moitessier would cut the corroded lower wire rigging (more saltwater contact at deck level on lower) and add chain links to fill the increased gap between the chain plate and the eye stud shackle to increase the life of his rigging... "Get Real, Get Gone" by Rick Page and Jasna Tuta. Of course, I have no idea how this impacted the weight . ;)

A couple quick technical notes from Luke at Kraken Structures "...Yes, 5 to 8 years depending on UV exposure, but what you can add in is that after that time bare dyneema can be expected to loose about 50% of its original tensile strength. This was tested by Chicago Yacht Rigging and published on his blog. Also note that the remaining 50% of tensile strength is still usually (depending on size) still stronger than the original wire was rated for. But when covered by chafe sleeve the life-span is almost indefinite when the core is protected, the chafe sleeve can be replaced at much lower cost." - "...Obviously chafe damage or other physical damage is easy to spot like any other fiber line. UV damage to bare line results in a ‘fuzzy’ appearance because the individual fibers begin to break due to UV exposure. When any bare line is used (like for life lines), expect about 5 years and consider replacing them when they get really fuzzy. Chafe sleeve is always ideal to protect your investment, note the labor in splicing is worth the extra time to increase the lifespan and save you money in the long run."

One question about Dyneema rigging. When your old stainless stays need replacement they will show you a few broken strands to let you know. (the ones you took off looked just fine) Now that you have the dyneema stays with the chafe guard sleeved over them, what signs will you look for to tell you when its time to replace them? Do you just replace every 3 years to be on the safe side or on some time plus hours under sail formula? What about if the boat gets overpowered in a big wind? Is there any signs to look for that would indicate damage to the standing rigging? Close inspection to stainless rigging can usually detect damage before failure. Are there any similar procedures or inspection methods for synthetic rigging?

If you do a tech video I'd love to see your process for the chafe sleeve as I definitely think it's worth the investment. I'm interested in why you chose to go Dux vs DM20? I'm pretty set on DM20 as it has lower creep which is the primary design criteria for synthetic rigging. It was designed by DSM for standing rigging but I haven't seen anyone on KZbin use it yet and can't figure out why. Thanks!

Dux is not really soft and pliable in the first place and it doesn't matter either way about the pliability of the line. The color of the sleeve shouldnt matter either as long as it just blocks the sun.

A black sleeve will block the most UV and deteriorate less from it. Most stable dyes, best protection.
