Efficient and excellent teaching. Very helpful for my Current networking course! Much easier to have a teacher that you can rewind whenever you want :D

Hi Dan. Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful to me. I am not sure why you used cross-over cable between PC and router. I thought it has to be a straight-through cable because they are different devices.

Great video! As a newbie myself,...its good to be able to predict what commands you will use next in order to configure your end devices. I would have configured the router with a static ip address and subnet mask, configured terminal, configure interface vty 0, ip address ...subnet..., no shutdown, exit, show run config, etc... I'm sure I've missed something in there somewhere, but this is my understanding up to the end of chapter 2. Please feel free to correct any mistakes I've made!

I have a "line aux 0" between con and vty... just for knowledge, what is this used for? I know it's aux (extra, backup) but what is/could it be used for? can it be configured for either connection?

instead of adding another computer, could you just use a crossover and console interface for one computer? then telnet to the router with the same computer that you have a console connection with? or does that defeat the purpose of telnet? Serious questions need serious answers!! Help
@Mike_Jones281

+Shamir M Serious answer: The link between the computer and the router is a crossover Ethernet connection. This allows for Telnet (over the Ethernet or perhaps the internet if it has been configured) in the router without a console connection. Remember that like devices uses crossover and computers and routers are like devices. On most routers there is only one console port thus it would have been impossible for him to connect to the console port with more than one computer.

+Mike Jones thanks for the reply. if I could reframe my question. in the video he adds another computer. what I'm asking is, instead of adding another computer. couldn't you just have 1 computer and 1 router.. and connect it with a console cable and crossover?
@Mike_Jones281

Shamir M yes as long as it is configured to accept telnet.

@danscourses
@danscourses 11 жыл бұрын
In order to Telnet in and have complete administrative access, you need to have the line vty password set as well as the enable password in order to get to privileged user mode. Try "enable secret yourpassword"

I can not connect the telnet services. It show connection time out and ; remote host not responding . How can i solve this issue
@danscourses
@danscourses 7 жыл бұрын
You need to make sure the ip addresses on the PC with the crossover cable and the router are both on the same network and that the interfaces are enabled and up. Test to see if you can ping the device first

Where is the IP config for an actual computer not in this program?
@PracticalIT
@PracticalIT 8 жыл бұрын
You can run the ipconfig from a command prompt on your computer. You can change the settings you see there on the adapters you have on your computer. Located in the network and sharing center, you should see change adapter settings on the right, from there you would right click the one you want and select properties to see what changes you can make.

Really retro Cisco. I wonder how Cisco got away with it? The short cuts kind of reminds me of the ZX Spectrum. IOS is from the same era, early 1980s
