@rbrtck
@rbrtck 7 жыл бұрын
+Virck Although the practice probably wasn't all that common, there were some cavalrymen who carried extra cylinders for the Remington Model 1858 New Army, which is a cap & ball revolver. Apparently there was some incentive to do so, especially since reloading a cap & ball revolver without a cylinder swap was obviously far too slow and cumbersome for any combat situation, and the Model 1858 made it relatively practical, even while on horseback, with its retained base pin that was also easy to firmly grip. This practice was portrayed by Clint Eastwood in the movie "Pale Rider" with a Model 1858, for instance, so it was a known thing even in the modern world long before this demonstration was done. Obviously the same thing can be done with the Colt SAA (or the similar Ruger Blackhawk in this case), although in stock form it is less suited for this, which is why, in addition to the metallic cartridges and loading gate being considered sufficient, it probably wasn't done in the Old West (or at least it hasn't been documented, to my knowledge), and even in this modern demonstration a modification was made to the base pin in order to make a rapid cylinder swap practical on the SAA. Otherwise, it's really more of a Remington Model 1858 thing, and was to some extent in the Old West. However, most who expected to need more than six shots tended to carry multiple revolvers instead--while this is heavier and more expensive, it is also faster and more reliable than swapping cylinders, as well as more robust than carrying exposed cylinders with caps that were only lightly crimped on and could easily be knocked loose. The SAA would have had even more of an issue since there was no designed-in way to keep the cartridges from falling out of the cylinders. You either had to rely on gravity, which is no problem for a demonstration like this under controlled conditions but impractical for carrying, or maybe a weak glue of some sort.
@timclaus8313
@timclaus8313 6 жыл бұрын
Would be marginally faster with a New Model Blackhawk, don't need to half cock to free the cylinder, just open the gate.
@rbrtck
@rbrtck 6 жыл бұрын
+Tim Claus Is opening the gate really any faster than half-cocking the hammer? And then you'll have to close the gate afterward, which is an additional step. Or are you talking about loading through the gate instead of swapping in a new cylinder? In that case, yes, it would save some time, but not with swapping the cylinder.
@bushwhackedonvhs
@bushwhackedonvhs 6 жыл бұрын
rbrtck I have owned a couple single action revolvers and I can tell you that, were it not for how finicky the pin is on the SBH, it would have been far easier to swap out than my SAA, because it's not hard to miss that half cock notch in a hurry.

I have a 1957 Ruger Single action in 357. My great grandpa bought it at the hardware store in town. It's what they call a Flattop Blackhawk.. it's had several thousand rounds of .38 ran through it over the years and a good many .357. It's still as fictionally sound and tight as the day it was manufactured. It also refuses to rust in the slightest. The only wear is on the walnut grips. Which I'd like to replace with bone/horn or antler. But I haven't found any that fit properly and haven't gotten around to making a set.... But it's accuracy is still remarkable At 50yrds. I have others, brownings, colts, Ruger autos, even had a New model Vacquero 357 yeah the old flat top is the only pistol that has never failed in anyway shape form or fashion... i'm certain that it'll be just as reliable in 500 years of firing if it's kept. The quality is just unmatched by anything I've ever held in my hands.... The new ones just feel completely worn out. And that's why I've had to get rid of the newer Blackhawks. They just don't stack up to the flat top. Not mine at least. And it spent 25yrs on a Massey Ferguson in Alabama Cottonfields!

I was sitting on my bed, fondling a Heritage Rough Rider .22 single action revolver. I was thinking about how a loaded cylinder swap would be the fastest way to perform a speed reload. I thought "A 90* addition on the base pin, an oversized button on the base pin retainer, some inletting on the base pin hole and maybe a detent stop so the base pin doesn't come all the way out, and a guy could be pretty fast at reloading this thing". Then I googled it and found this video. Not surprising. Of course Cisko figured it out first.

Not everyone has an extra cylinder or mods to the cylinder pin. General Patton, during the Mexican Expedition as a Captain commanding Pershing's HQ Company, experienced the agonizingly slow reload time required for his M1873 Single Action Army. After having to reload during a firefight, his solution was what became known as the New York Reload. He bought a second M1873 Single Action Army and wore the pair in a brace, which he used a couple years later in WWI. After WWI, he gave one of them away to a Hollywood actor he admired, replacing it in 1935 with a Registered .357 Magnum.

Nicely done. I saw Clint Eastwood (I believe it was outlaw Josey wales) carried spare cylinders for reload so I practiced and tweaked my ruger vaquero (spin free’s smoothed things up a lot) it’s definitely faster/funner....

That looks a lot like Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider, but with an 1858 Remington.

Nice shooting! I have an Old Blackhawk, a New Blackhawk and a Uberti birdshead all in .357, but definitely can't do it that fast! Maybe I'll just carry all of them and do a New York reload.

To the folks with the argument it’s just easier to carry a second gun.... consider this, I can carry 3-4 spare cylinders, but I wouldn’t carry that many revolvers

After some time, I've found I can do this between 6-8 seconds. Just the reload portion, of course.

About ten years ago my stepson earned the second highest rating for marksmanship in the Marines. They were grooming him to be a sniper. He could shoot a honey dew melon at 500 yards using iron sights (.308 Remmington 700 rifle) and hit it every time. I asked him how he got so good at it and he said "Jim, I shot a lot of rounds." :O)

Definitely thinking outside the box. How did Wyatt Earp put it? "In a gunfight, you have to take your time...in a hurry". You got all 12 rounds fired; but near misses can still get you killed; and you got "stuck" on the second string of fire. Not that I could've done any better; not AT ALL. But in a REAL gunfight, you could NOT afford to put all six rounds on target 1; target 2 would blast you for sure. Shoot 1st 6, ALTERNATING targets ( or see how many you can do; max 6, 2 hits each, AND in "9" ring or better; probably need to take a few steps while shooting--moving like your LIFE depends on it--but not running; just a couple ideas to "up your game"). Still, VERY impressive. "Ummm; much potential you have. But Jedi, you are not...yet".👍😳👏👏👏

If Blondie and Django thought that technique, there is no need a volley gin inside the coffin, instead they will make nore coffins for those outlaws. Nice work out there, Sir.

Very Impressive. With that kinda speed Josey Wales could have used you at his last battle at the cabin. It almost appears you throw the cylinder in place much like Miculik does with his moons...KUTGW

I am a novice shooter. It seems as the single-action reload is impractical for reality but excellent entertainment and shows what the human mind can accomplish when maximum desire and discipline are used. Congratulations.

Ahh, the glove!! Lol. I’m 52 and still have the Ruger Single-Six I’ve had since I was 9. And I still remember the day when I was 12 or so and figured I could ‘fan’ it. I think I still have the scars from my left palm getting cut up. Figured I should have deburred the hammer, but never thought to wear a glove. Ahh, the ignorance of youth. (And the same ignorance that figured you could shoot at a 1950’s car sitting in the desert, without a round ricocheting into your forehead. 😂)

That's very impressive considering how tight the tolerances on a cylinder are! Have you ever put it back incorrectly on accident and had a misfire? I would be so scared something was misaligned after reloading that fast
