The lahmian side looks a lot smoother on the larger surfaces to me, though it just could be from you being more careful with the excess.

it is interesting...

@@WayoftheBrush it could be a cool experiment for sure, but i think you need a more controlled setup. maybe try shoulderpads and backpacks only since they can be neatly compared side by side, and arent so big. also try some different mediums and maybe water too. this contrast paint concept is pretty cool, but it seems it could be implemented a bit better.
@mikehawkins3465 жыл бұрын
It looks to me the Lahmian side is much lighter with darker recesses, I like that look much more.
@WulfenLooseInLondon5 жыл бұрын
Mike Hawkins agreed, the Lahmian side looks smoother on the large flat areas (the leg especially).
@ravener965 жыл бұрын
the gradient on the leg also looked a bit smoother to me, also the shoulderpad was much nicer with the non contrast medium.
@wonderboy2402 Жыл бұрын
Also there is less shine with the Lahmian.
@johnmogilka42685 жыл бұрын
It looks like the lahmain medium smothes out the flat parts and allows it to run smoother in to the recesses. The the contrast medium you can see dark spots where is "pooled" on his armor.

Wow! Lahmian actually looks much nicer in a lot of ways. Seems like you get more control and a smoother shade as well. I saw that side and it immediately made me think of a Zaku, which is cool. Good video Kris.

Thanks again for doing these videos. I got a chance to try them out last Saturday at the local GW store. They are very different from traditional acrylics. More like a super heavy watercolor.

Definitely seems the contrast pulls towards the recesses more where the Lahmian looks almost like a blend into the shadows. Could lead to an interesting usage on areas like cloaks and more natural shadows.

would a more even ratio of lahmian to contrast paint give a stronger application? I note you used a lot of lahmian from your dropper.. this might be why the lahmian side of the mini is a little more translucent in application. Definitely going to avoid the contrast tech medium though - the lahmian is MUCH cleaner/smoother.
@WayoftheBrush5 жыл бұрын
More testing is needed. I suspect using the technical contrast medium for glazing will give better results.

Are you going to make a vid for comparing using the different mediums for noncontrast paints(normal paints and washes, primarily)? ~~if the answer is "contrast medium doesn't work with normal paints" I still want to see the result~~

What I see is the Lahmian Medium creating more of a wash look where the contrast medium keeps it smooth and simply makes it more transparent. That's good to know because I'm getting ready to paint transparent sections of miniatures and that is what I want. THANKS!!

Looks like contrast medium is better for tinting the surface where as lahmiann medium acts as more of a wash to get darker crevasses and dark shadows
@brence19845 жыл бұрын
Seems ike Comtrast Medium creates less subtle highs and lows (more...Contrast) lol. Both seem to work nicely to different effects.
@TheDigitalThreat2 жыл бұрын
I only see this being useful with those darker colors that tend to leave more patches and such. This would help "juice" it up so it spreads a little better while keeping the same fluid consistency, unlike the way water effects contrast.
@Shypa5 жыл бұрын
I think in an one to one mix the base medium of the contrast paint it self is still dominat. Maybe you should compare regular base or layer color mixed with lahmian medium and contrast medium to get more compareable results. Cool video anyways!

pause @3:20 and look closely: the left side (from the minis perspective) is darker, while the edges are more prominent. the right side is lighter and less prominent in areas like under the lower forearm or elbow. on the other hand the lahmian medium makes for a smoother, lighter, and cleaner finish, while the contrast paint makes for a more "smudgey" surface, darker, and spotty finish. I like the recesses better with lahmian, the contrast ones look too dominant to me. I wonder: would a 1:1 mix of Lahmian and Contrast mixed in any paint even out the properties of both media? or worsen them?

Question about the Grey Seer and Wraithbone paints, have you had a chance to put them through an airbrush? Bit windy where I am and I have an airbrush booth set up, so would prefer to run the paints through an airbrush for the pre-coat stages.

the base paints Grey Seer and Wraithbone will go through the airbrush just as good a regular GW paints.

Thanks for this video, I prefer lahmian medium to the contrast medium. I’m asking now if a classic wet palette would be usefull for contrast paints

I have not tested it, I suspect it would introduce a fair amount of water and the special feature of the contrast paint would be diluted.

@@WayoftheBrush that’s good to know- I’ve had a few of my buddies complain that when they airbrushed the contrasts, they just applied as normal translucents. None of the stuff that occurs from normal painting on white. I’m not spending a lot of money to find out 😆

for thinning Citadel colors I like Lahmian medium as it thins without losing adhesion. Vallejo Glaze medium works fine with citadel colors but doesn't thin the body of the paint. It all depends on what you are doing and how you like to work with colors. Personal preference as in all things painting.
