On this "Reviewsday Tuesday" I share with you one of my favourite products, and the ONLY Games Workshop model I think is worth purchasing for D&D. This incredible set is just a big ol box of skulls, 340 various skulls actually. Great for decorating mini bases, kit bashing, and dressing up your terrain.

Worth noting that the 'alien' skulls from the 40k races can easily be explained as unknown creatures or for variant fantasy races. The Tau skulls (the ones with big eyes and the slit instead of mouth/nose) I used to represent changeling skulls. Created a nice feel as players found the skulls and tried to figure out where they came from, only to discover the town was a colony of changelings the whole time. Use your imagination.

Some GW minis are amazing for D&D and actually better value than many other manufacturers. Their LotR line is awesome for bulk baddies on the cheap (Orcs, Humans, Goblins) , and the AoS line isn't bad for some stuff. The new "easy build" Nighthaunt kits in particular spring to mind.

Yeah most people are thinking pre etb prices. Even the start collecting boxes, particularly the flesh eater courts one is insane value. Pack says 14 models but its really 17 with TONS of spare parts, dragon heads, weapons and arms.

I bought a Nighthaunt hero to use as the big bad in my last d&d campaign and TBH nothing else out there could have brought the same reaction as a highly-detailed ghost king on a floating throne accompanied by two spirits carrying a trumpet and massive banner. It cost me about 35 dollars, but it was well worth it.

the problem with these skulls is they attach to the main sprue on the top of the head, often the most visible part for when you use them. It would've been wiser if they put the connection at the bottom of the skull or under the jaw where it could be better hidden, as sometimes you can get a little uneven surface texture from where it's been cut out and isn't as smooth.

I was thinking the same thing while I was watching the video. I assume they needed to put it there to get the mold to fill properly. As much as we all love to complain about the price of GW stuff, they have gotten pretty good at minimizing cleanup from mold lines etcetra.

Just need a skull to adorn the top of her spear and some to add to the base. I agree with your comment regarding GW pricing, I tend to look for cheap models on eBay etc.. Though I am considering buying a Skavenblight Scramblers Blood Bowl team to convert. There are twelve models in a box and cost around £18 gbp at my local hobby store. Hoping to convert them into a post-apocalyptic Skaven warband. Though I could go for the Mantic Games Veer-Myn minis.

While there are some other miniature manufacturers that offer bunches of skulls on the cheap, it is true that the GW box is one of the most cost effective products, specially for Warhammer players as there are skulls for several races. If someone is looking just for human skulls, it is possible some options are slightly cheaper, but the few non-human skulls in these sprues can be waived as generic fantasy/sci-fi monsters, even if some of them are pretty recognisable as Warhammer species.

I agree that a lot of their models are way too pricey, but there are some that are great for DND gaming. I picked up the Death Rattle Skeletons to use in DND, and for $20 for 10 skeletons they come out even cheaper per skeleton and look infinitely better than the completely lame looking Bones skeletons. Also, the Dryads at $24 for 10 of them are great to use as a gang of twig blights. Plus these models come with a lot of extra bits that can be used on terrain and other uses.

Not a huge fan of Games workshop stuff but...I must disagree about some Warhammer items and cost. You can buy a box of figures that fit nicely in a DnD game for quite a good deal. Moreover the models blow what else is available out of the water for quality. 1st example is lizard men. You can have a whole army of lizardmen to fight for less than $2 per model. Reaper bones cost about the same. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Seraphon - Skinks $30 and you get 24 models that you get to put into the pose you want. 2nd example is skeletons. 10 for $22 again Reaper type costs but you pick the pose and I have used a bunch to cut up for crawling skeletons etc. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathrattle Skeleton Warriors You just have to look at their site. especially look at the army packs to get large quantity at a good price. Stop in a store on occasion just to see if their is a deal. I do agree that the individual model can be quite overpriced but you can find a few inexpensive items for you game like a evil sorcerer riding a dragon. Super nice sculpt $45

I haven't tried them myself, but I've heard from a few different sources that the mantic undead are nicer than the citadel undead. The assembled pics certainly look nice. They run 20 for $30 usd. Edit: Or 40 skel warriors for $45 USD

Here are my thoughts on Citadel: I despise their paints and paint pots, their pricing range on their models is way too high, but the quality is amazing, fun to assemble and paint, and for DMs I find that if you have the income they are worth it for horde type enemies, like goblins (grots) Orcs, ratmen (Skaven) and dark knights (Chaos warriors). I am surprised the Skulls box is so small I was expecting it to be in one of their larger boxes. Also, if you want more of that one big skull you like, have you tried using Blue Stuff and Green stuff? Blue stuff is a thermoplastic you can use to make exact duplicates of models and its fun to use
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
I will be doing some silicone molds of the ones that are in low qty in this set and recasting in resin. As far as using GW models for D&D goes, even when you remove the issue of price I'm not a fan. This is totally personal preference but I find their models way too over the top in a way I don't like. I think of them like the "monster energy drinks" of miniatures if that makes sense. They are as good as it gets for painting, but I just don't like the style. I also don't like using them in D&D games because they are so iconically tied to their respective universe and having two long time warhammer players at my table any time I use GW models it instantly causes a disruption and breaks immersion.

Stupid beginner question: do these skulls need a primer too or will a basecoat stick to it?

Sadly, here in Italy is a little bit expensive ...but i don't care if the quality is very good. And GW always has the quality at the top.

I got a pack of skulls that were all humanoid, including some skull piles, but I can't remember where I got them. It could have been GW, but I don't think it was

Those were actually a different but similar product from Green Stuff World, they were resin cast orc skulls that I'm guessing they modeled after these.

Obviously if you play both d&d and any gw game systems their models have alot of flexability but the best are definitely from the lord of the rings line, the size and style is basically just d&d

If you play both the cost becomes a lot less of a deterrent.

On a 1 to 1 comparison, GW models cost the same as Reaper Bones. The difference is that you can't buy just one. On top of that, the sculpt quality is far and about most fantasy minis. Although they definitely have their own distinct aesthetic which may or may not work for any given person.

GW is too pricey for it's own games really... That being said f you know how to shop it there are some gems. They are a good way to get orks and Skelotons in a bundle for a good price and good quality I think. And they have a few minis that look really really cool! (Dark oath Cheiften might be a bit on the high end side but it looks so cool that I say he was worth it. One of the Best barbarian mini I have ever seen.) at the same time I wouldn't go there for all my mini needs. (and I use to play warhammer 40k but I just didn't enjoy it as much as DnD.)

Say you wanted a gang of orcs for you d&d, getting 10 reaper bones orcs would cost over $20 while the superior games workshop savage orruks (who are well sculpted and quality plastic) cost $35 and you get 20
