I had a similar experience with my Citizen Dive watch. I was able to find a Panasonic replacement capacitor battery on Amazon for $29 and a watch repair tool kit for $10. With a little care, it was a snap to install. Local watch repair shop wanted $170. Thanks for the tip.

Hello Peter, I am Doni from Brazil and the tips that you giving us it´s great, I just change my new capacitor, but I didn´t know that if pull out to the second position will charge up the capacitor. Probably wouldn´t be necessary to buy a new one, the last capacitor wasn´t charging. I bought from chinese web site, but the next time I will buy from the website that you recommend. Great man thanks indeed. So happy.. Cheers..

It's NOT a capacitor. It's a Lithium-Titanium rechargeable Battery. The voltage of a capacitor depends linearly on the charge contained in it. A battery has a far more constant voltage. The nominal voltage for this battery is 1.5V. It charges anywhere from 1.8 to 2.6 Volts - this wide charging voltage makes it immune to being overcharged by the solar cell.

A capacitor stores energy in the form of an electro-magnetic field between two plates. This is a rechargeable battery as it converts chemical energy to electrical energy over time. A battery delivers a constant nominal voltage for a long period, a capacitor delivers a constantly reducing voltage from its nominal value down to zero. They are commonly referred to incorrectly as capacitors, but they are in fact rechargeable batteries.

Could you explain how the charging circuit works and how to best test it? I've replaced my capacitor and my watch is still stuck on the two-second skip even after a few days in the sun. I am worried the charging circuit is bad. The solar panel seems fine, as it will two second skip even WITHOUT the cap in the watch.

Great video....so when charging the initial new replacement battery do you do that with the stem pushed in or pulled out at the first click like if you were going to change the time?
@watchesandjewelry4 жыл бұрын
Pull out to first or second click. Leave it in the light. However most new capacitors have at least a half charge
@friedhelmschroter81244 жыл бұрын
Both ways are basically OK, but when you disconnect/deactivate the second handle it is easier for the solar cell to charge the battery and charging at weak light works faster/a little better because more power from the solar cell can go into battery charging (the watch operation requires less power). If you are charging in direct sunlight the difference should be small, but the less powerful the light the stronger the improvement in charging when deactivating the second handle.

Peter: Just found your video and really appreciated it and how to-the-point you are! I have a Citizen Ladies watch that needs an mt516 capacitor. I changed one only once for my husband's larger size watch...this one is smaller and the capacitor has 2 copper things sticking out, across from each other. Wondering if you could advise me as to which side goes which way??! Which side is positive and which is negative? I already damaged one from Ebay and don't want to ruin this one. Also didn't know at that time that holding it with a metal tweezer can damage it.....thanks for ANY input!! ps: I have begun to change batteries on old watches for our local charity resale shop. I'm 81. Thanks much! Peg

Glad you are taking charge. It’s difficult to actually tell you which way the capacitor goes in. Typically the positive side is marked on the watch in the recess where the battery goes. The actual orientation of the copper tabs is important. However that capacitor is used in a variety of watches and I can’t say for sure which way to put it is. Look for two points on the watch that look like they will make contact with the tabs on the capacitor. If you can match the tabs you should be fine.
@OffGridInvestor3 жыл бұрын
Find someone with a multimeter and they should be able to tell you what side is negative and positive. With normal watch button cell batteries, positive is the top. And ALMOST all of them have positive facing the caseback. Except for quite a few of the analogue watches of the 80s from the USSR (probably not something you're likely to see but I collect USSR watches). The digitals they had in the USSR were pulsar copies.

Eco drive watches use a variety of different style capacitors. You can search for one online by using the model number of your watch. I suggest being carful as some sellers on places like eBay mismark them.

Thank you for a great video. My late husband was a diver. He had, I now have, Promaster eco drive 200m aqua (land). I don’t dive do I want to give to my young nephew who does. But want to make sure it works properly. Yes this was stored in a chest for about 2 years. Definite Eco Drives watches are NOT worth it (it's only my humble opinion only....do not attack me please ! ) These watches still need a battery ...period ! ( and expensive ones : even if you do it yourself) Rather stick with my regular quartz watches : I change the cheap batteries myself and I am able to keep the water resistance . If you own several watches you'll always have one running and ready to wear. I wish someone could come up with real solar watch WITHOUT a replaceable battery . Keep the good work !
@friedhelmschroter81244 жыл бұрын
Basically/principally I agree, if you can do battery exchange by yourself (this means not counting your time to purchase batteries and replace them) and not considering the time your watch is not available/working replacing the battery in an Eco Drive does not pay out. However for people who do not have the time, skillness, knowledge or tools it looks completely different, Eco Drive runs and runs and runs ... until you probably like to exchange your watch anyhow. And Citizen claims recent production shows a much improved life time of up to 40 years. Would you revise your opinion if newly produced Eco Drives do really run for up to 40 years? (Considering it from another angle, I believe there is not basic reason for Eco Drive batteries to be such expensive, except the low quantity and therefore no real/few competition)
@rjarias20114 жыл бұрын
@@friedhelmschroter8124 Of course I'd revise my opinion if the new eco drive batteries were made to last 40 years ...simply because I am over 40 years old..ha ha ! So basically these new 40 year battery watches would last me a lifetime (maybe I'll be dead when the battery wears out so I wouldn't care much) Forgot to say that I like some Casio watches a lot : their "10 Year Battery " watches last way over 10 years.I've had some Casios and G-Shocks for a long time and I never have replaced the batteries .I never use the alarms (useless to me because are not loud enough) and barely use the light.Even the regular casio watches have very long lasting batteries.So for that reason and many more I will always love casio watches !

@@rjarias2011 : i prefer my watches to last 5 years or maybe 3 years as a minimum on battery changes but i know that some watches last 10 years and that is maybe something i would look for if i was wanting to buy a new digital or something else new .

MT920 is a rechargeable battery button cell, it is 5mAH in capacity, very low capacity compared to a similar size watch battery button cell 0f 148mAH, a capacitor can charges and discharges ten of thousands of times without the problem of holding the charge, but this MT920 can charge and discharge 500 cycles then it will be expired like a cell phone battery, I own a Seiko Kinetic watch which used TC920, an earlier version of 3.5maH cell, ECO drive or Kinetic energy are just gimmick in the name of high tech to lure the consumers to pay for a tiny energy battery cell with 10 to 30 times the cost by welding an odd metal tab as a custom connector to the watch, locked the customers out of the regular rechargeable button cell price, Seiko was confusing us by using the naming of capacitor battery to give consumers a peace of mind thinking that Japanese had the capacitor/battery technology under their belts, bought their watches with admiration in early days of marketing, in fact we all got screw until today, the watch repair man still believe the myth, buy a regular Quartz watch and use a regular watch battery cell, it has 30 to 42 times the energy of ECO/Kinetic battery capacity, in 3-4 years replace with a new one, this is the most user friendly battery cell solution, the H with Shine it or Shake it routine to keep it working. Again! MT920 is not a capacitor device.
