Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo foot well leaks and how to fix them

In this episode, I tackle the common problems with these cars - leaks! I’ll concentrate on the leaks at the front of these cars for now and the rear leaks will follow in a separate video. I’ll be demonstrating the process of sealing the man three causes of water ingress - door seal, door card membrane and aerial sealing. The links for the products I used in this video are shown below, with the exception of the sheet plastic used on the door because that was sourced from the manufacturer.

Currently I have this problem with 107. I was able to dry the rear boot but no idea how to remove the floor carpet at the front. Thanks for this tip!

I believe the floor carpet is held on by clips underneath the sill trim. I’ve never actually taken it out myself though.

@@DABDIY i just removed the carpet today. It requires to remove the seat pan on the rear passenger as well as the front seats and handbrake cover. On the floor there are two rubber plugs on each sides front and rear that can be unplugged to drain the water. Don’t have to remove the carpet entirely just need to flip them up and dry up the floor under the hot sun.

I knew about the rubber bungs, but I’ve never had cause to remove the carpet before.

Problem with this car it cannot be parked in the rain with the front higher than rear on incline. This will cause water to seep theough the opening of the rear hatch. This is first time I have the problem since moving to a new home. Garage only cover half the car and it is ramped up towards the house. I will need to extend the garage roof.

Hi there, A very informative and easy to follow guide! I replaced my front driver’s side speaker membrane using this video with a brand new part from my local dealer (only £5 a side surprisingly). Ended up using butyl tape to stick it on and it has stopped the leak from that side entirely. Now just have to do the front nearside door speaker thing too.

@@DABDIY Yeah no worries 👍. I only used butyl tape because it seemed like that was used to stick the old one on so I rolled with that! The tape cost me £8 for 6 metres on eBay so the repair probably came to £15 max in materials.

That’s cheap enough, can’t argue with that! Would you mind dropping a link to the tape you used? As you saw in my video, it looks like butyl tape type material was used previously on my car, which is why I had to try and clean it off before using the tape.

I've just done the same leaks as you but I found that the water was coming in through the bottom of the interior door panel possibly coming through the fixing plug holes, straight across the door seal.so, I applied a silicone sealer to the plastic plugs and refitted them. Silicone the rear lights and High-level brake light too. Just got a whisker of water now but I think it's what was left in the panels. The rear boot was full of water too

I’ve only got a three door and the front door leaks were sorted in a different video. I did the same as you in the boot though. I had a little dribble of water coming in for a while, but it seems to have dried up now.

Surely the little holes at the top are to let the air out of the tubular bit of the seal. That way when the door is closed, the seal is compressed so the air has to go somewhere otherwise it would be non-compressible. All the seals have these holes, even on the rear side windows and the rear tailgate.

You’re quite right, but with how flat these seals have gotten, it makes very little difference.

Had to replace the whole indicator stalk on my Mrs 13 plate c1 at 89k think they have a common issue also antenna for radio leaked water into the light black silicon sealed it up a treat before it done any proper damage

I’ve recently had to re-seal my aerial mount because I wrapped the roof, this removing the seal input in place in this video. I’ve also had to replace my indicator stalk too, there’s a video of that on my channel, later on in the Project C1 playlist.

Excellent video and will help most of my issues with my sons Aygo My biggest issue is the ceiling trim is soaked and I have no idea how to take it off/replace? Any ideas? I have put a dehumidifier in the back of the car Thanks 👍

The ceiling trim will dry very easily because it’s quite a thin material. Once you’ve stopped the leaks and the dehumidifier has dried the car out, give it a wipe and it’ll look fine again.

I fixed my leak by sliding an empty cheap biro pen body under the door rubber. It lifts the rubber just enough to prevent water ingress. It hasnt leaked since.

I did something similar on the other side with an auxiliary seal from X8R. There’s a video about it on the channel.

I think there's a little bit of a flaw in your work. At 14.22 you applied tape over the Teardrop cut-out. In the middle, that is to redirect any water running down the inside of the door skin back in. citroens design fault was not having a secondary sheet that deflects into the door, so you'd have two sheets attached at the top and one goes inside the door at the bottom

I just wanted to cover every potential ingress point, so I covered it all! Seems to have worked though. I went out earlier and recorded the review of this (3 weeks after putting the fix in) and it’s dry as a bone. Also, the door does seem to have a hole right at the bottom that appeared to have water dripping out of. I only noticed that after I’d recorded the door card part, so it’s not on camera. I’ll definitely keep an eye on it though.

@@DABDIY yes water always gets past the window sesks it's inevitable so all doors have a hole at the actual bottom, the purpose of the plastic inner is to deflect it back, I agree probably works but I think it could have been improved if you have to do it again, the original design is pretty poor anyway, relying more on some glue more than deflecting it, indeed some other cars do have a secondary piece that tucks inside the door

@@jusb1066 I’ve still got the driver’s side to do, but it’s not leaking just yet, so it can wait for now lol. The passenger door appears to have sealed quite nicely though. It’s been raining pretty much non-stop for the last week and it’s dry all round. The seals have done their job and the bottom of the door card is nice and dry too. I’ll keep an eye on it, but can’t see me changing it any time soon lol 😆

@@DABDIY the secondary outer door seal seemed to be a good idea as fitted them as standard on a Mark 2,. Other cars have also had them for years, also has an effect on wind noise reduction

Agreed, it’s done a fantastic job! I’ve got a novel idea to seal the boot leaks. I won’t ruin the surprise, but the bit I can spoil is that I’ve got more of the same stuff to use as a secondary boot seal.

I had the same issue. I buyed silicon spray cleaned al the door rubbers and sprayed them in. Its not leaking anymore

Hi had the same issues of puddling in my C1 do you have any tips for removing the mould build up afterwards or even where I can get a full interior carpet replacement for cheap as my dealership wanted about £400 to do it! I’m glad you found the video useful. In order to dry the car completely, there was additional work to do to the rear of the car. There’s a video covering the rear leaks on the channel. Once I’d sorted the leaks t the back and it was relatively watertight, I put a mains powered de-humidifier in the car for 24 hours. It’s been dry since.

I had a similar problem when I had a leak in my Volvo. I had to bail it out with a jug and then dry it with a number of towels. I then had to go at it with a hair dryer and leave the heating on the foot wells for as long as necessary until it had dried out. This is before I had the bissel.

@@comsicbrew1 Honestly, I have no idea. It was one I borrowed from a friend of mine. At a guess, I’d say it was approximately 10 liters, but I could be wrong. I kept emptying it until it didn’t withdraw any more moisture.

Hi there. I see in the description of your video that you provided a link to two types of gaskets type L and D. You used a D type gasket for the door. Why L type gasket? Have you used it anywhere at all? Because I don't see it in the video. I have the same problem in my wife's car and I would like to deal with it so I am asking for every detail. There’s no errors, it reads just fine, thank you! I used the D shape on the door and the L shape on the door frame. They were generic rubber gasket from eBay, so the links in the description may not still be valid. I also used the D shape one on the rear tailgate to seal up the water ingress points.

Thanks very much for this video. I've just bought the seal and I will get it on when it arrives. Another issue has occurred with the passenger side plastic windscreen trim. As you face the front of the car the trim that runs across the base of the windscreen is in 2 parts. On our car the driver side section fits perfectly (nice and tight into the base of the windscreen glass. On the passenger side the trim is loose and sits slightly away from the glass. Any ideas how to fix it so it fits flush? Any help would be great - Thanks!

Hi David, thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you’re enjoying! I’ve never come across that issue before. Without actually seeing the problem, I’d make an educated guess and say it needs sticking back down. That said, it’s a pure guess and if you are on Facebook, I’d recommend joining ‘City Bug Club’ - post some pictures in the group and one of the knowledgeable owners will have come across it before. At 15:40 on wards you show the white original seal with duct tape round it. Mine is split across. Do you think its okay to remove the lump of foam on the door card ? Then I can just put some new plastic were the white foam is on the door and tape around that. Thanks for making this video.

hello! I am going to try to use your video to seal one of the doors on my peugeot 107 as puddles keep forming in the passenger side rear footwell - i think i'm going to try your method of filling the factory car seal with silicon, am i right in assuming thats the same stuff you use to seal shower bases etc? Yes, it’s the same stuff, just plain clear silicone. You might also try looking at the door card membrane too, that’s where the majority of my leak was coming in from.

Omg! You are the best! I have changed all seals for new one, added an extra seals and it is still leaking! I have no styrofoam inside my door ( this big one ans speaker one ) so this must be a reason. Can I buy those two parts somewhere?

The leak I have is particularly in footwell behind the drivers seat and in the boot on the same side gets soaked. I'm wondering if it's the rear light for the boot but not sure where it's coming from for in the footwell. It's only a bit damp but more central on the floor.

It could be a combination of factors in your case. I’d take a look at the videos I’ve made about the leaks in the boot too, particularly the one about the after market seal kit by X8R. I had similar problems where I had leaks in the front and the back, so the whole car seal kit really helped.

I used brake and clutch cleaner to clean and degrease the bodywork. I know that a bit of a dumb idea because it can thin out your lacquer, but this is only a car that I’m using to practice my skills on. You could use any kind of light degreased, like maybe dish soap or something similar. The secondary seal has helped in my car a lot. I think the leak was resolved mainly by the door card membrane, but the secondary seal has really helped with wind noise.

We just bought a aygo 61 reg and it foggs up like crazy end up driving with head out the driver window .iv checked for leaks the carpet bone dry .we had 3 ppl in the car raining outside an all window caked in water it was water inside than outside . i had a puddle in the drivers footwell this morning for the first time, should i just let the water dry out naturally? i don't want any mold though. the reason for my leak was due to one my friends taking off the membrane when installing a new speaker, oddly enough only the drivers side was affected by the heavy rain not the passenger side..

Don’t let it dry naturally, it will definitely cause mold. Remove the water from the car and reinstate the door card membrane that was damaged when installing the speakers.

@zanexlmao look under the car at the floor pan and you’ll find some rubber bungs. Remove that and the water will flow out and onto the ground.

If there’s no water in the boot, you’re lucky! I’d do what I did on my front doors, but on your rear doors. It’s also worth looking to see if you still have an outstanding recall on your car for the rear windows.

Same reason really. If it’s a 3 door, it’ll be seeping in as shown and making its way backwards, water takes the path of least resistance. If it’s a 5 door, it’s likely to be the same thing, but on the rear door. It might also be worth checking out how I fixed the leaks in the boot too because the high level stop light can sometimes leak into the cabin area and down the body work, making its way under the rear seats and into the foot well.

Hello, I've bought an L shape seal and I'm still getting water into the front left footwell, it gets flooded, i also bought a secondary seal for the boot and that is stuck on well, but water is still seeping through, I've seen the water sit near the lock mechanism in the boot and it slowly leaks in, any advice?

It might be worth either repairing/replacing the door card membrane to resolve the front foot well leaks. Also consider sealing the aerial too. As for the boot leaks, all I did was undo all the bolts that hold the lock mechanism in one at a time, dry the area throughly and apply a dab of silicone sealant before screwing them back in again. That seemed to work for me.

It’s just a thick plastic sheet. Imagine a heavy duty garden bin bag kind of material.
