Citroen DS3 Front Suspension Spring Replacement, Broken Spring Repair. "The Full Job" DIY

Creaking, Knocking, On the front suspension, you might have a broken spring, In this video I replace the O/S/F spring.

the scuttle panel stays in place, you access the top nut by going through the cabin filter hatch on the left hand side

"Spread it a bit" with a screwdriver... nearly zero elasticity in cast iron man. On citroen you always undo the driveshaft, lower ball joint , and steering. RHS drive shaft is secured, and more forgiving. If you start your wiggles on the LHS the driveshaft will pop out of gearbox and you will loose the oil. If not careful you will shear the oil seal as well.

That's cast steel mate, it's ductile unlike cast iron, but your caution is well placed !

Great guide however I have a problem, Great guide however long shot lads but I've followed this to replace the top mount and bearing and now I have a slight 'clunk' on the front end no idea why, every nut and bolt is tight, anyone know why? Does the top mount rubber need to go on a certain way? Any help much appreciated.

@@aaanton11 Thanks for the reply mate, didn't expect one! originally the bearing was shot so replaced that but I also replaced the top mount too as it wasn't expensive but when I put it back together I get a slight knock over bumps - not all the time though, I think the mount is on wrong as I doesnt have a locating PIN on it If you know what I mean.

Great video. Had a problem with the driveshaft coming out of the g/box, and lost a bit of oil. can't find the fill plug, wondering if you know where it is. found the drain on the diff. Many thanks. The car has a 1.6 petrol engine.

Can I ask why you need to remove wiper blades and scuttle panel don’t you just remove the little panel in front of the shocker mount it just unclips out or am I missing something thanks

The scuttle won't come off as there is a plastic end cap at each end that need removing first just above the strut nuts. Then the scuttle lifts off at the rear vertically

Hi aaanton, could you please tell me which way the top mounts on the ds3 face ( i.e. do the small holes which you pop a pin through the top mount inner wing and top mount face the same way for both sides ) I can't seem to find any info which says this side is like this and the other side is the same or facing the opposite way . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great video. Quick question. Should you replace both front axle springs if one cracked or one at a side is enough? I know shocks need to be replaced in pairs, not sure for springs.

Easiest way to do this is take out center nut in hub ,undo the bottom ball joint push shaft out makes so easy to take out leg then

Cheers for the video, great help. Only issue I’m having now is as I was removing the shock I noticed a puddle of gearbox oil form on the ground, I think I’ve pulled the drive shaft a bit too far out, is this an easy fix or what would you recommend I do now. Thanks

I did the same, the only way I could remove the shock absorber was to pull out the dive shaft (or by removing the ball joint,which I wasent keen on doing). I have done this job many times though my life on other cars, and I had never ever had this problem before

I’ve just changed my wife’s spring I didn’t remove the wiper blades or scuttle panel or the 3 bolts connecting the hub to the bottom arm

When I removed mine it was pressed in between a grove in rubber under the window it's really stiff

I’m glad to see you had the same issues as I did!.. scuttle, getting the suspension down low enough. Did you have to locate the top bolt with the alignment holes?

If you compress the spring an inch or two on the car, push the damper in an inch or so, you can get the bottom of the strut into the hub easily with it been shorter. Then release the compressor. Audis are the same and that’s how I do those. 40 mins a side that way. Under 30 mins if you’re quick. Nothing else has to be touched.

@@aaanton11 I’m doing the front springs on my daughters ds3 tomorrow. One side totally snapped in two and dropped. I was going to have a chilled day too! Should be fun aha… Yeah if you put your compression tools on the spring at each side, whilst it’s attached at the top. You can wind them in an inch or two. Push the damper up and then into the hub. Make sure the alignment of the spring hasn’t twisted or moved. Slowly unwind the compressors and pull them out. There’s usually just enough space to get them in the gaps at each side. This way you can leave everything else attached to the hub. You can release the tie rod end and that gives a tad more down push. 👍

I use 2 sets of compressors... Use a big bench vice too now. I wouldn't use an impact gun either as can spin shaft of shocker and screw up seals!
