For pomelos, I find it easier to cut of the ends, then take a knife and cut off the rind, including the outer membrane, then the fruit comes away from the tough membrane pretty easily.

Somewhere in my travels on the wild world web in the past couple of decades, I once came across a wonderful 3D map representing the relatedness of all the citrus, which are derived from 4 citrus base stocks [citron, & a few others which I forget, but one of which I'd never even heard reference to before stumbling on that map.] Man, what a fabulous place this internet thing can be!.. I just found the Pomelo like two videos ago and I wouldn't say its difficult to open. I like the word "fun". I've been a fan of grapefruit (the sweet red ones) and I love talking my time on perfecting and opening it. The bitter of a grapefruit IS in the way of enjoying the fruit. Beautiful round citrus fruits. 👌🍊💖
@RSHandley8 жыл бұрын
Very entertaining and informative - brilliantly done! Although (if you haven't already in the years since this posted) I DO recommend you try another "Ugli" (aka "Uniq") fruit as I really do find them quite tasty. For what it's worth I agree with your description of it as a "mild" fruit - but the better ones I've tasted almost have a mellow lemon-like flavor - but definitely without the extreme tartness, and a mellowed-out grapefruit flavor also seems to be present. Another perk - almost NO seeds. :) AND I couldn't agree more about Pomelo - incredibly tasty...but a pain to get to the goods!

Grapefruit was also an easy addition for people already growing oranges in central FL and south TX (for some reason, the Rio Grande valley seems to produce the best grapefruit) and seeking to (slightly) diversify. Most pummelos are less cold hardy, so have to be grown where winters are less severe. There is a fair amount of variability in pummelos, though, so if the original material had come from a cooler area, it might have worked. Pummelo is the source of the "grapefruit effect" furanocoumarins that make grapefruits, pummelos, and sour oranges dangerous for people taking certain medicines (like statins), but a guy at the University of Florida bred a safe "grapefruit" from a pummelo that by chance had negligible levels of those chemicals. Maybe a pummelo from high elevation (in Yunnan?), rather than from Indonesia where they first came to the attention of the West, could be grown by large, experienced Citrus growers, though grapefruit has the name recognition edge in the US. With the spread of diseases like hualongbing and canker, it may prove an advantage to grow Citrus outside of their traditional range even if it throws a wrench into the shipping and juice factory logistics of industrial/monoculture agriculture.

Tangelo (Minneola's) are the most delicious citrus fruits you can buy. The problem with your analysis is that is depends on which _variety_ of citrus fruit you cross pollinate to what the result is.
@mbyt01 Жыл бұрын
Enough from word of mouth. Explanation can only fill the gaps in my learning. I don't learn well mainly on paper or by mouth. I need to see the process, then I can do it through imitation. First let's set the details: 1) Is an Ugli fruit another name for a Uniq fruit, a Tropical Citrus or a Jamaican Tangelo. 2) Is the product of a Pummelo and a Tangelo or a Grapefruit and an Orange? Which one should provide the pollen the Orange or Tangelo ... or ... the Grapefruit or Pomelo? At what time of the year should the transfer be made under what conditions with what soil, what pot. Is there any use for grafting from what plant to what stump stem or bifurcation? Should the resulting plant be kept low? Should any resulting transplanted fruits be discarded the first crop/year? Should all the leaves of the first shoots be removed including 1/2 the top remaining ones? What rooting substances can be used?
@juels5086 жыл бұрын

I have had pomelo and cocktail grapefruit. A cocktail grapefruit, although more rare, is better than pomelo in my opinion. I'm not sure about its ancestry but it is similar in size to a grapefruit. It has green/yellow flesh and a brilliant taste, like a grapefruit without the sourness, much like you described a pomelo. A very delicious fruit that I find tastes better than a pomelo, and you can eat it without having to deal with so much rind. BTW I did a video on it if that interests you.
