Yes! And different breeds of sheep, too. I... I don't think Jacobs would pay much attention to a Chihuahua, for example. (Actually, don't risk that. The Jacobs *might* decide to fight back, and the Chihuahua would lose. Stick with docile sheep versus tiny lap dogs.)
@moosedawg717 жыл бұрын
Teckniphobia - I've seen it - it's hilarious! I used to take my cattle dog to a herding instructor and someone brought their chihuahua, but they worked it on the ducks as the sheep were too big and scared it. Funniest thing ever though was the littler of Corgi puppies that someone brought that they put in the duck pen. Best thing to watch ever! Those little guys could run!

Any working breed has a ingrained job they have to do. Herd dogs herd, bird dogs flush and retrieve, hounds hunt. I'm a firm believer that if you get a certain breed cater to it's natural disposition.
@Fitzroyfallz6 жыл бұрын
Some breeds are in fact bred to just sit on laps. Many small breeds were bred to sit on ancient Chinese emperors laps all day. But I certainly agree that working dogs should be catered to differently than how most people look after them.
@isabeau16647 жыл бұрын
That cattle dog needs to get out there and run around more than just on her birthday. I'm sorry but overfeeding your dog is not love. It's downright cruel. Cattle dogs (and corgis for that matter) are agile dogs. They are supposed to be able to move. That dog is way too fat and it's unhealthy.

ACD's are pretty food motivated, and sly = yay! Snacks! I don't know how old the ACD, she looks a bit round to me too. Short legs or round? I dunno. I see a lot of round ACD's. I'm careful with my dog's diets, hopefully they won't get round as they age. I also take mine herding frequently, it's addictive to just stand and watch their wheels turn.
@nobodyimportant71356 жыл бұрын
Just what I was thinking. :/ The dog's life quality will be decreased, whether it knows or not. It's the owner's job to moderate their diet and give them exercise. And it's pretty simple: DO NOT GET A WORKING DOG IF YOU LIVE IN THE CITY AND CAN'T WORK THEM ALL THE TIME. -o-

I have a cattle dog corgi mix too, and keeping them “skinny” is very hard, we give her a cup and a half of food in the morning and a cup at night (such a little amount because our vet said 3 cups a day was too much for her) and we take her on walks daily but she’s still very chunky, It’s just the corgi in them.

This is cute and all but please don't get an active, herding-type dog and expect it to do well on simple leash walks/small yards/only dog parks. Lack of physical activity leads to dogs expressing their pent up energy in other ways. Herding/cattle dogs thrive on massive properties, and do best with something to do (such as, you know, herding.) Please research a breed before you decide to get it just because it's cute. Or you can just go adopt a dog that would be a better fit for your family. It's always a sad thing for me to see active herding dogs crammed into small yards and then to hear owners complain about their dog's "poor behavior."
@livclementine63737 жыл бұрын

@iluvsparkles13786 жыл бұрын
Steven Mason it has to do with the fact that one of those dogs is a cattle dog. I have 2 of them and i live on 4 acres with all kinds of animals for them to heard. they have things to herd and run around and such. you just can't have a cattle dog in a small house or apartment with a small yard and nowhere to run and expect them to behave. that is not how that works.
@Luculencia6 жыл бұрын
My purebred Border Collie and herding mixbreed have both lived in a small city apartment and been fine with it. No specific "job" but we're very active (offleash hiking and swimming 3 - 4 times a week) and a lot of obedience and trick training. Occasionally dog gets to come to work with me and we go for coffees or meals in town with friends at lunch time or after work, dog meets lots of people and other dogs and gets rewarded with yummy treats for good behaviour. Not a bad life considering the alternative was growing up / living out old age in a concrete pen in an underfunded shelter. My preference is for herding type dogs because in my experience they make the most obedient and intelligent pets, and (provided you give them an appropriate amount of exercise and mental stimulation) they are so well behaved indoors (just settle down and chill). Plus they are mostly the perfect size for a dog: medium sized and athletic! Obviously they aren't for the average dog owner because most people seem to be very lazy these days (and many are without the time to put in for a smart and active dog), but for someone with the time and the drive they are the best pets! You do not need a farm or a huge property to keep one happy, you just need to take the time to do fun and interesting activities together :)

@digglygickmcgee7 жыл бұрын
Looks like they are doing as well as they can as newbies! I think the sheep are used to being herded so it's not necessarily 'fun' for them but it's fairly normal. They are pretty exuberant initially but they all settle into just moving the sheep towards the people, it seems. No biting, no trolling, just moving them. On the other hand, my husky would probably chase/terrorize the sheep with no real motive, it'd look a hell of a lot more chaotic than this hahahaha! (I'd never let this happen because I know better, of course, but she'd have a hell of a time at the sheep's expense)

Heh, this is great. I own sheep. My herd dogs started in a set up like this, long before we had sheep. We even have hair sheep, just like the runner of this ranch does. My girls have progressed from wild circling (which is what these dogs are doing) to penning the sheep and the goats, bringing them across pastures, and cutting ones I need cut for medicine, hoof trims, or whatever reason. Those two are good pups. I hope that little cattle dog loses some weight though. It's hard on their hearts to keep them so pudgy.

DO NOT LET AN UNTRAINED DOG IN WITH SHEEP!!! The risk is higher that instead of herding the sheep they are chasing the sheep! Dogs chasing the sheep is VERY stressfull for the sheep and the dog might even get very triggered and acctually bite the sheep. Not to mention, the sheep might decide to defend themselves and injure the dog. ALWAYS use trained dogs on sheep and go to a professional to learn about hearding
@semperferusartist7 жыл бұрын
Good PSA, but should add that you can't just take your dog who you think would enjoy herding and go down to your cousin's buddy's uncle's sheep farm and turn them loose with some sheep. Also if you plan on having any sort of hobby farm don't assume you can just get a border collie/aussie/cattle dog/corgi/etc and that they will be able to herd your stock naturally. Herding can be a fun sport for any herding and/or working breeds and let them satisfy their instincts but ALWAYS seek out a trained professional to teach both your dog and you in how to properly shape their instinct. Case and point my grandfather had always had border collies because he liked them, and had always had cattle. But his dogs weren't TRAINED to herd cattle. But they did have INSTINCT. His last dog he had was very very interested in chasing and directing the cattle, but she didn't listen to commands and often was in the way and is lucky she didn't get killed half the time. Herding is a partnership between shepherd and dog, and if you don't know how to work together either the dog or the stock can easily get hurt.

Anyone who has been to a dog park when there were herding dogs like a Aussie Shepherd or Border Collie, will see that’s just the nature of those breeds. I use to frequent a dog park and a border collie would always try to herd my dog when he was fetching. Doing figure 8’s trying to control my dog. One day, he nipped my dog’s leg and my dog turned around a chased. After that, he moved onto another dog.

EnderGamer Girl The sheep are raised with dogs so they are used to them, they’re called “dog broke”. No it doesn’t mean they’re broken, it just means that they are sheep that have been exposed to dogs and have been trained to go where the dogs take them, and also to go to the shepherd. The sheep know “being close to humans mean the dog will stop moving me”, so they automatically follow and move toward the human (well not all the time lol, naughty sheep. But actually most of the time they do), this way when the shepherd walks from one grazing field to another the sheep will follow them. The dog takes up the rear and just makes sure there aren’t any stragglers. A sheep that is not dog broke will be scared, but these sheep if you notice are just moving at the pace the dog sets, they aren’t bolting, they aren’t stomping they’re feet (an aggressive warning) or trying to head butt or kick the dogs. The sheep are born knowing dogs from day one so they are never terrified of them. Both lamb and puppy grow up having a mutual respect.

Hannah yeah, It's kinda cruel. The sheep were really scared.

Camila Rojas Actually those dogs are bred to herd animals. The sheep are used to being herded since they group up. The dogs have herding instincts.

They really don't mind it as much as you'd think.

I've raised goats, but I do understand that there's a big disposition difference there. I don't take care for sheep myself if that's what you're asking. But I've had friends who did and have interacted with sheep and seen them being herded before. They run and seem scared during, but just as soon as the dog stops, they stop and go back to browsing without having to cool down or anything, which suggests that they weren't panicked or really terrified. I imagine it depends on the herd and whether or not you've trained them to be accustomed to it, or maybe if they're familiar with the dog.

You can't just take any dog and herd sheep. Border collies have been selectively bred for hundreds of years to herd and even some of them aren't born with herding instinct. Dogs that want to chase, bark, and bite like these "city" dogs are incredibly stressful for sheep and they could hurt or even kill them if people weren't there to control the situation. It would be like giving your house cat a live mouse for a toy. Not okay.

Is this unnecessarily stressful for the sheep to have to provide this "service" of standing in as prey just to fulfill the urges of cattle dogs? #whataboutthesheep
@eleanormunt28606 жыл бұрын
Not really. These sheep have been raised around dogs so to them their more of an annoyance than anything. They don't want to be touched by the dogs but their not scared. Trust me, you know when an animal is scared and they are definitely not scared or stressed.
@whitneya.69306 жыл бұрын
Eleanor Munt You can tell these sheep are nervous. These dogs are far more aggressive than a working bred dog should be toward stock.
@Luculencia6 жыл бұрын
Dairy Queen exactly. They haven't been trained to stay off the sheep and work from a distance so they're getting uncomfortably close to the sheep (closer than a trained sheepdog would get). I hope the trainer at least rotates the sheep out for new sheep after each dog so that they don't spend too long being stressed and chased around a small pen.

Dislike. These people and their dogs remind me of pampered ‘hunters’ who go and ‘hunt’ exotic wildlife who are caged in. These sheep are being terrorized for the entertainment of these dogs and their owners. I love dogs, but count me out.

Nicknaming your dog "fat" in Spanish isn't cute when her health is being compromised. You're basically admitting your not being mindful of her overall health.

I have a cattle dog, they aren't naturally chubby but sometimes they can look a little chunky bc of their thick hair. what I'm more concerned about is her lack of tail.
