The subtitles in english don't do enough justice on how good and authentic the dialogue in this movie is.

Not to mention how much they actually swear. There are so many lines where 50% of what they're saying is foul language and none of it gets translated so you miss just how creative us Brasilians really are with the poetry of swearing
@yaboyisaac354 Жыл бұрын
is that due to english not having the words available to translate the phrases? or just a bad translation
@heilmann18 Жыл бұрын
@@yaboyisaac354 There's way too much cultural diferences that influence the slang in Brazil, also there's variations of the same word for everything with different meanings. Portuguese is a much more complicated language than english.

About the characters' names: they are all nicknames, even (of course) Rocket. His real name is just revealed in the end, when he becomes a photographer. It is a way to represent how much this neighbourhood/favela takes away from people. Rocket was just allowed to become his own man (ie rescue his own name), free from the gang life that surrounds him, by a mix of character, work and sheer luck. Not everyone is so lucky thought, and the cycle repeats itself for generations while he walks away from all of it.

Nice take on the name thing.
@milpy1257 Жыл бұрын
I don't think the nickname thing was about how much the favelas take away from people... it's just how we treat each other. At school, people only knew my name because of the teachers, outside the classroom I was called by my nickname. Anyone not from the same grade as me, didn't know my name. And it wasn't public school. In fact, even the cops did the same 'Melon Head' and such. But it's true that the richer are, the less nicknames are used.

Cidade de Deus was the film where Alica Braga emerged as an actress even making a small participation with Angélica. After this she became an international actress, working on films such as I am Legend with Will Smith, Elysium, Redbelt, Predators, Suicide squad, the Shack and the TV series Queen of South. Did you recognize her now?

I think this is the best reaction video I've ever seen. No pausing every time to talk about the video, no yelling or talking so loud we lose focus of what we were watching, no two minute pauses to look shocked. It was nice to watch you watch it lol I wish every reaction video was like this, because every reaction video I watch I have to skip and skip because people keep pausing
@WillWatches2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed!
@zippoxd78392 ай бұрын
It’s mostly for copyright, and they use the pauses to add commentary, some time for others they just skip entire scenes to avoid copyright, but atleast with that way we can see the full movie

a thing that I never noticed, even having watched this movie near 20 times, is that the "pai de santo" ( father of saint, the voodu dude) said that he shouldn't fuck using the protector, because he did, he lost his protection. The word the dude used when he said that "furunfar" isn't in my normal vocabulary.

These subs take away 90% of the slang terms and swearing. Those are horrible subs. There are probably better ones out there for this film. It's kind of like watching a Martin Scorsese movie cleaned up without the swearing, just horrible.

@Wes Ley To be fair, those two are some of the most popular recent ones, but there's many more from other times and genres that is questionable if they're really the top 2 of all... Just in dramatic we have Central Station, Keeper of Promisses, Brainstorm, Behind the sun, O Quatrilho, To the left of the father... and more recently The second mother, Bacurau, The invisible life, to say some. (Yeah, I made a research to list it up)

Lil dice and lil zé are really bad choices for translation. Dadinho is the diminutive form of dado, which means dice, but it's also used as a short for eduardo (edward). So the best translation for dadinho would be eddie. Zé is a short for josé (joseph), which is the most common name on brazil. It's common in brazil to use zé to call some generic stereotype, like "zé ruela" (alley zé), which means "loser". This is just like you use "joe" as a generic name, like in "average joe", for example. So, the best translation for "Zé Pequeno" would be "Little Joe".

Some thing that are actually very interesting about this movie The only profesional actor at that time were Carrot and i think that Seu Jorge was an actor too, the rest were just people from the city, fantastic job being just regular citizens, sadly some of then just ended up like the role they have on the movie. The edit its amazing and it was the first film for the editor Daniel Rezende, on the first 30 second are like 50 different cuts
