CITY OF TROY digs deep to give Aidan O'Brien an eighth Coral-Eclipse victory

City Of Troy defied the testing ground at Sandown to produce a hard-fought victory in the Coral-Eclipse.
The Derby winner, who bounced back at Epsom having failed to land a blow in the 2000 Guineas, was the 1-4 favourite under Ryan Moore.
For trainer Aidan O’Brien he stalked along in the slipstream of stablemate Hans Andersen, but when asked to quicken he did not produce the turn of foot perhaps expected.
He still took up the lead, however, and was able to hold off a late challenge from 11-1 shot Al Riffa to triumph by a length with Ghostwriter five and a half lengths behind in third.
It proved a nervy watch for the master of Ballydoyle, who revealed after the race that the testing ground in Esher gave connections plenty of anxiety.
“We were very worried about the ground, we walked it before and it was very soft and tough deep ground, softer than it was in the Dewhurst,” he said.
“He was pitched into unknown territory today and I remember before the Dewhurst we were very worried and took the chance but to walk it today, it was deeper, way deeper.
“It is always tough to watch because the difference between winning and not winning can be massive and I’m delighted for everyone.
“In all fairness to the lads, 15 years ago they would have taken him out, they wouldn’t have run him, but we’re so lucky they enjoy their racing so much now that they wanted to be here and they wanted to run him.
“To walk it I was very afraid, but the lads made the right decision - it was a long discussion.”
O’Brien felt the victory came in spite of the going, which would not be the obvious surface for a horse with an American dirt champion for a sire.
The trainer said: “He’s a beautiful good ground horse, a real fast ground mover and he has won despite the ground. It would have been easy to take him out but the lads all came and they wanted to run him. It was tough because that is specialist ground and it didn’t go to plan because of the whole thing.
“He won quite well in the end. Dylan (Browne McMonagle, on Al Riffa) said coming in that he had him and then he went again. He said he thought he had him, but he was always maintaining.”
City Of Troy was unchanged in the market for the Juddmonte International and the Breeders’ Cup Classic with bookmakers Paddy Power and Betfair, whereas William Hill eased him from 6-4 to 2-1 for the former race and from 6-1 to 8-1 for the latter.
On future plans, O’Brien said: “I don’t know what the lads will do but I would imagine they will have a look at either the Juddmonte International Stakes (at York) or the Irish Champion Stakes.
“After that we will maybe look at America. Everything about him is good ground or better. I would imagine he could finish off in America in the Classic. That is what he is bred to be, his dad was a dirt horse.”
Moore admitted he had expected the win to be more convincing and pointed to the going to echo O’Brien’s assessment of the race.
He said: “I suppose in reality everyone was expecting him to win and probably be more impressive, and so was I. But the ground was an inconvenience for him.
“I was happy enough with where I was but halfway round the bend the ground was a little bit loose and he just lost his action for a stride.
“Ghostwriter took a length out of me and I wasn’t going as comfortably as I should have been, it just took me a while to organise him.
“I got to the two furlong marker and I had to go and I thought he did well because I wasn’t really happy up until then. He found plenty and it never really felt like he was going to get beat.
“I still think we are learning about him and I thought the ground was an inconvenience so I’m happy he has won but I do think there is more there. I thought he would probably beat them by 10 lengths today and I wouldn’t be surprised if he does it next time.
“These conditions are not what he wants, he has an extravagant action and slow ground into a headwind is not easy. I think he will be better in a higher-tempo race.”
On the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Moore added: “I’ve never ridden a Breeders’ Cup Classic horse so I don’t know what that takes. I think this horse has the engine and the ability but we have to work out if he has the right action for it.”

City of Troy showed great heart to take this by a length . He doesn't like the soft ground , but he ploughed through it like a boy . We are all very proud of the best horse in England and lreland . When we can beat the english horses ,this makes us all very happy over here for we have a great lrishman in Aidan O'Brien that can do so 💚

That wasn't as impressive as you would have hoped for, but he had a few things to overcome : drawn wide, lit up and keen per the commentator (after being slightly reluctant to enter the stalls), never got to the rail except at the death, Ghostwtiter kept him out all the way, first time going round a big right hand sweep and he didn't seem to be in love with it, or with the ground. So plenty of excuses all in all, but he didn't actually need any in the end. Looking forward to seeing him again.

People have got to stop comparing this horse to Frankel. Had the same thing with Pinatubo after he had a tearaway 2yo win. Horses mature at different speeds, I suspect both City of Troy and Pinatubo were both well forward as 2yos compared to their peers. At 3 we saw the true picture. Frankel wasn’t a level above this horse, he was several levels. Can’t help thinking the hyperbole after his good days and excuses after his bad days are more about protecting his stud value. Getting a bit tired of AOB telling us every year that the current one is the best he’s ever had.

On the surface to the naked eye, this looked a very workmanlike performance by City Of Troy. But I think it's worth noting that the ground changed and softened markedly overnight, causing the defections of Hampton Court Stakes winner, Jayarebe, and Dahlia Stakes winner Stay Alert during the early morning several hours prior to race time. And while I realize City of Troy's form lines to date are littered with good to soft form in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket/July, the Epsom Derby and outright soft form in his Dewhurst Stakes win, on good ground alone Sandown is a very stiff 10F, and on ground softened a fair amount overnight, makes the going that much stiffer. The main thing even though he drifted across the track noticeably late race, he still bowed his neck, fought on hard and got his nose across the wire in 1st place which is what great horses do.

@@tomojay28 yeah, it would have been a worse field. If nobody was willing to take him on at 10 furlongs they certainly weren't going to take him on at 12. Last 50 or 100 yards you could visibly see him start to put distance between them. No horse would have got near him at 12 furlongs today.

Embarrassing Coral Eclipse and I guess a lesson to every trainer in the land - don't be afraid of one horse. They virtually handed this prize to a very average talking horse. This was an all at sea performance from the winner - only managed to scramble home because it was running against absolute rubbish. I said at the time the Derby form is crap and nothing I have seen since is leading me to believe any different.

@Essydyk sorry very embarrassing comment, bro. the Derby form this year is below average but not this one who isn't great but decent. If he is crap, what's that like sir pecy, high rise, Benny the dip...etc? Don't even see the dead current ratings and please pay attention to the setting of the race how Ryan rode him into a less ideal position no cover all the way.

Hung right throughout, couldn't shrug off a 2nd-tier 3yo until the final furlong, drifted sharply to the rail & then allowed a 3rd-tier older horse to get to his hip in the final few hundred yards? This is the stuff of legend; immediate spin from the jock about the "testing ground" to add some sort of drama to what should have been an absolute procession against an anemic group of horses...there was a 3yo filly in there that was coming off an unplaced finish against her own gender & age group for f's sake 😂

Another O'Brien hype machine !! Won one of the worst Derby's for 25+ years and scrapped in to beat one of the worst Eclipse fields you will ever see assembled. So many delusions people that listen to the rubbish that comes out of the guys mouth. White Birch, Economics, Look De Vega would have destroyed that horse today i mean come on that was a dreadful performance from the so called Ballydoyle equivalent to Frankel and for the '50th time' the best we have ever had. Please run in the Travers or BC Classic as it would be the lay of the century for a PLACE!! To be honest i wouldn't at all be surprised if the horse doesn't win another Grp 1 for the rest of the season. Just another over rated, hype driven bang average so called wonder horse from the O'Brien lot, move on nothing to see or listen to here just keep laying this thing for the rest of the season and keep blocking your ears or pressing mute when ever that man gets interviewed.

@@nightowl7459..Ryan doesn’t say much, but when he speaks it’s time to listen. The fact he said he thought they’d win by 10 lengths is one thing, but he feels they are still trying to work out this horse & with a couple of alterations he could win by 10 lengths next time. That’s not a statement you hear very often from Ryan so I feel that City of Troy’s best performance is still to come.
