Butte Wikipedia:
Butte is the county seat of Silver Bow County, Montana, United States. In 1977, the city and county governments consolidated to form the sole entity of Butte-Silver Bow. The city covers 718 square miles (1,860 km2), and, according to the 2010 census, has a population of 33,503, making it Montana's fifth largest city. It is served by Bert Mooney Airport with airport code BTM.
The city used to be home to many mines, especially copper, mines, such as the Anaconda Copper Mine.
Established in 1864 as a mining camp in the northern Rocky Mountains on the Continental Divide, Butte experienced rapid development in the late-nineteenth century, and was Montana's first major industrial city. In its heyday between the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, it was one of the largest copper boomtowns in the American West. Employment opportunities in the mines attracted surges of Asian and European immigrants, particularly the Irish; as of 2017, Butte has the largest population of Irish Americans per capita of any city in the United States.
Butte was also the site of various historical events involving its mining industry and active labor unions and Socialist politics, the most famous of which was the labor riot of 1914. Despite the dominance of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, Butte was never a company town. Other major events in the city's history include the 1917 Speculator Mine disaster, the largest hard rock mining disaster in world history.
Over the course of its history, Butte's mining and smelting operations generated in excess of $48 billion worth of ore, but also resulted in numerous environmental implications for the city: The upper Clark Fork River, with headwaters at Butte, is the largest Superfund site in the United States, and the city is also home to the Berkeley Pit. In the late-twentieth century, cleanup efforts from the EPA were instated, and the Butte Citizens Technical Environmental Committee was established in 1984. In the 21st century, efforts at interpreting and preserving Butte's heritage are addressing both the town's historical significance and the continuing importance of mining to its economy and culture. The city's Uptown Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States, containing nearly 6,000 contributing properties. The city is also home to Montana Technological University, a public engineering and technical university.

They’ll just get their copper from some place else. Nothing works without wire and the best conductor is copper. I wish he had gone to Centerville and Walkerville also. I would love to see what they look like today. This makes me home sick even though I was only there for 5-6 years as a young teenager. I still miss it.

My parents and family were raised in Butte. Irish minor immigrants. At one time Butte had over 100k people. Mines ran 24/7. Copper Capital of the world. The Summer Irish Festival is really fun. He missed a lot of the areas cause you need to drive to see most of it. Weekends people have lot of outdoor activities they go to. Night time is active.

I do like your walks. I am currently a geography student and like to watch videos on different places. My primary mode of transport is walking, too. Walking around is my fav past time. Currently, I am scouting some midwestern or great lakes region for to relocate to see about going for a bachelor's degree in geography sciences. Just watched your video on Casper, Wy, too. Another place on my list for moving to to study for geography. I will see how it goes. Cool vids!

Many businesses do not survive in Butte. Since the mines closed down much of the town has left. Population in 1900 was 100,000, now it is 34,500 for the entire county.

My two biggest impressions of Butte: 1) all the buildings are red, brown, red-brown, orange-brown, reddish, rust, pink-brown, etc. Endless red bricks, various shades of red, forever and ever. 2) the fronts of the buildings are all flat flush with the sidewalk and the sidewalk is immediately alongside the road. You try to walk along but scrape one elbow along the fronts of buildings and scrape the other against parked cars. I may exaggerate a bit, but that's the impression. I'm watching videos on Butte because one of the current job prospects I'm considering is in Butte. So I am curious to see what the town is like, imagine what living there would be like, compared to places I'm familiar with. Where would I hang out on a Saturday morning? Where would I find fellow digital artists and mad scientists and electronics engineers? I guess it'll be a lot easier to find brick layers.

Very beautiful, I like it very much. Reminds me of the film by Wim Wenders: "Don't com Knocking". There are also scenes in a street with head frames in the background. In my town there were also a lot of old industrial buildings and residential buildings with bricks. Since there is not much space in Germany - lol - and most people want to live in new buildings, almost everything was torn down and residential buildings put on top.
@CityWalks

This is a little bit like Bruges Belgium. The economy completely bypassed it which meant there was no economic incentive to knock down these old buildings. Back door conservation I guess. - H

Many thanks for the walk Henry. Interesting city. I like the architecture and the cities overall aesthetic, though it seems like it could use some more green space. I hope that Butte benefits from an influx of young professionals like Bozeman has. I think I might have to seek out a book on the cities early history. Thanks for piquing my interest. All the best to you and yours.

Glad you enjoyed it. I don't think many people are moving to Butte, unfortunately. And yes, I am with you on more green space. It's a pretty dry area though. What they really need is a couple of economic drivers to put people back to work. It's a great community but it has struggled economically for quite awhile now. -H
