Big Transformation of Intramuros! Pedestrian-Friendly Tourist Destination 🇵🇭

Update on pedestrianization project in Intramuros as of 27 Feb. 2024
Intramuros is undergoing revitalization that aims to transform the historic walled city into a pedestrian-friendly tourist destination. Several projects are currently underway such as the
pedestrianization of Juan Luna street and restoration of Intendencia building.
Once completed, this long stretch of Juan Luna Street will be closed to traffic and only pedestrians will be allowed to use the road. General Luna Street was chosen as it passes by most of the
historical sites in the district such the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, and the Casa Manila complex.
The pedestrianization project begins from General Luna St. corner Aduana St. stretching south to Muralla St. near Puerta Real (Royal Gate) at the district’s encompassing wall. The study noted that pedestrianizing General Luna St. “provides an unobstructed route linking the important attractions inside Intramuros to the attractions in Rizal Park.”
The AI is proposing to fully pedestrianize Gen. Luna Street as a pilot site to see how this improves mobility within Intramuros. The pedestrianization will also support the redevelopment of open spaces that both aim to relieve the essence of and reconnect to this historical place.
The 2022 Onwards vision is anchored on three pillars: 1) convergence of urban regeneration, 2) cultural heritage and 3) sustainable tourism, which will enable Intramuros to become a “sustainable creative urban heritage district.”
Six priority programs are slated to achieve this vision, namely: 1) preparation and implementation of the first Intramuros’ Conservation Management Plan (CMP), 2) pedestrianization of the streets, 3) Manila’s Tourism Circuit, 5) open spaces redevelopment,
and 6) the SIMPLE program or the Strategy for the Effective Mainstreaming of People’s Living Entitlements which will address the long standing concern on the problem of informal settlers.
The pedestrianization of major roads enables better
protection and appreciation of major destinations. The pedestrianization will also support the redevelopment of open spaces that both aim to relive the essence of and reconnect to this historical place.

the beautification of Intramuros will not be complete until the ugly electrical wires are buried under the ground.....also the front of Manila cathedral or Plaza Roma needs to be beautifully landscaped n the water fountain also needs to be fix n colored lights installed....more colorful flowering trees need to be planted such as the Balayong trees of Palawan (Philippine version of Cherry Blossom) w/c blooms fully in the Summer time

Not only the ugly electrical wires but almost most of the Bahay na Bato Buildings and the churches and the historical landmarks that are destroyed and never restored. I pray that the Walled City of Manila or Intramuros will be restored to its classical and a True Filipino historical sites.

One reason sited for this is the yearly flooding of Manila. They say it will entail a lot of financial expenditure to have buried cables on water logged areas like old Manila

Great progress! But it sure would be nice to refresh the paint on the street lines, sidewalks, as well as improve the landscaping. Maybe do some grass edging too. Unfortunately, none of this beautification efforts will mean anything if a no littering rule is not strictly enforced. A sign that says, “Absolutely No Littering” may help. 😊

Looks like there is no communication happening between the utility companies and the administration of Intramuros and the tourism officials. Whoever thought of this is great however they still fall short on other aspect like collaborating with the utility companies.

The malnourished trees and foliage in this plaza shows poor maintenance and incompetent tourism departments.
