Republicans don't plan to waste time remaking the US government if their guy wins in November. The playbook is "Mandate for Leadership: the Conservative Promise," aka Project 2025, and it's chock full of amazingly terrible ideas when it comes to cities.

Please vote in November, and do more if you can. Here are a couple ways to get involved. (We send postcards to swing states in our household!)

The conservative transportation policy is essentially the status-quo which isn't surprising. Tell me this, why is transit infrastructure so terrible in the US despite most cities being led by those of the democratic party that constantly make promises to deliver better transportation yet always seem to fail? It is mostly those of the democratic party in city councils that decide our local zoning laws and they are also complicit in maintaining the single-family zoning status-quo. They failed to make any significant policy changes to transportation during Obama's two terms and Biden's term has only partially supported California's HSR plan. Both parties fail horribly on transportation policy because the republicans are openly status quo (at least they're not lying about it) and the democrats lie about not supporting the status-quo.

This isn't just policy. Project 2025 provides Trump with step-by-step instructions to convert the U.S.A. into a dictatorship. These people plan to eliminate civil-service protections for 50,000 employees and to fire them. They would, then, be replaced not by "partisan hacks" necessarily but by Trump loyalists who will do his bidding. These people have already been vetted, and they include replacements for the Department of Justice and for the military. Trump has already said publicly that he will fire all of the generals and replace them with loyalists who will serve him and not the Constitution.

@@xibalbalon8668 It is like Conservatives are determined to prove that "big government" doesn't work by being really bad at governing. No idea how they get a reputation for being good fiscal stewards either. They cut taxes, then act surprised at the resulting revenue short-fall. No businesses won't be eager to invest enough in growth in order to pay the same taxes as before. They will use the money for stock buy-backs and executive bonuses instead.

To anybody that wants to unsubscribe because they don't want politics in their video about city planning, I just want to say reconsider for a second. City planning isn't an abstract thing that we do in SimCity or something, it is a deeply political project. It requires funding from almost every level of the government and is fundamentally shaped by laws surrounding zoning, speed limits, etc. There is one party in this country that doesn't want cities to be livable. They want single family homes and lots and lots of gas powered cars. If you're a fan of this channel, but not of politics, I hope you can at least rethink how politics directly shape the cities we call home. That's just a thought though.

@@UnicornDreamsPastelSkies Funny thing about simcity, I only have Simcity3000 unlimited but there it's remarkably difficult to make a city that isn't car-centric. There's no way to make pedestrian zones, plazas, or footpaths and what's more the game seems to have been balanced such that rail/subway transit gets congested as easily or more easily than roads (which additionally are suspiciously cheap to maintain).
@Maranville

It's not that planning isn't political, but rather that it's a particular political issue, and if you want the maximum number of allies and collaborators to get things done, then you'll avoid unnecessarily tying it to other issues.

The Hobbit movies feature Smaug, a giant dragon who murdered a city to amass a treasure hoard larger than anything most people can dream of. It is literal massive halls filled with mounds of gems, golden coins and objects tens of meters high. The dragon as depicted in the movie is over 400 feet long and still dwarfed by his own piles of treasure. But the real horror has nothing to do with this dramatic and very, very evil monster. The real horror comes when you realize that if Smaug were real and in the United States, he would not be the richest person (or creature, I guess) in the United States. He would be 18th in the US and 25th globally. He also wouldn't have the highest personal body count either, especially if you count the indirect deaths caused by billionaire pushed, greed driven policy.

Rural Cambodia wants a return of the Pol Pot regime despite the only benefit it gave to Rural Cambodia was getting to make the Cambodian urbanites suffer. Of the 25% of the country that died during the Pol Pot regime, 80% of those deaths were active killing of the countries urban population. The other 20% were rural Cambodians, though not through active killing but famine and preventable diseases caused by lack of access to resources and capital that was sourced from the cities. Despite having to locate the seat of government in Hungary's capital of Budapest, Victor Orban, his cronies and his support base (all from rural Hungary) despise Budapest and Hungrarian cities in general. They are sympathetic towards Russia despite living through the Hungrarian revolution where Soviet tanks attacked Budapest. When recalling that horrible time for Hungary, one would see a smile on their face rather than the anger one might expect because in their minds, Russia was putting the urbanites in their place. Poland suffered greatly under the Soviet occupation and subsequent Soviet controlled puppet government. Russian soldiers would sometimes intimidate the Polish population by going into a city and mass shooting a whole bunch of random people. Poland's main support for pro-Russian politicians comes from the rural population of Poland. They don't look at Russia massacring Polish people with horror but glee because the Russians did it to urban Poles and largely left rural Poles untouched directly. The Iranian revolution and The Taliban started in the rurals of their countries. They were built on a foundation of "punish the infidels" which were the cities. The fact that those cities were steadily improving the economic and physical well-being of the countries by providing access to industry and medicine does not matter to such groups. In this case, it's not only spite towards others but also a religious motivation of considering life on this world to be worthless and by relation, well being on this world to be worthless.

@@patrickderp1044 This is not a good argument. Vaccines and Women's reproductive health are two entirely different concepts of understanding. A women is her own body, any such acts upon her body should be done with her permission. An unborn fetus is a part of that women's body until it is born, and as such any acts (or lack of acts) upon her body should be done with her permission. We don't consider the fetus to be it's own person. For example, we don't count them for populations and we don't grant them citizenship, it is not a legal entity until it is born. We do however give respect to the mother by sometimes referring to the fetus as such. So, keep in mind that women's bodies are their own bodies and the fetus inside them is a part of that body, thus becoming umbrellaed in the organism that is the mother, and as such the mother should have sovereignty over her own body. Contrary to some popular opinion, a vaccine is not about your body, it is about everyone else's bodies. Becoming more resistant to a biological danger is a plus for trying to get someone to take it, but it's not the point of the vaccine. The point is to reduce the likelihood of survival for the virus in the population at large. Every person in a population that gets the vaccine makes it much harder for that virus to spread and to continuing living. So the former is about one body and it's sovereignty, and the later is about all bodies and their collective sovereignty. And before one argues about vaccines and sovereignty over one's body: Consider this hypothetical: You are stuck in a room with 99 other people, one of you have a bomb inside of you that will go off within 5 hours, killing all of you. Luckily, you have the qualified people that can disarm that bomb and remove it from the person without injury to them. However, the person with the bomb refuses the surgery. Is it okay for that one person to decide the fates of 99 other people's bodies so that they can have the control over theirs? Or, does the 99 people's control of their bodies take precedent?

I don't really understand this point. The time to focus on policy was during Biden's term so that people had a built up idea of what is good versus bad policy. But few people are educated enough in the span of a campaign itself to change their minds much based on detailed policy discussions. People make their minds up, rightly or wrongly, based on the horse race stuff. The Democrat's insane refusal to set Biden aside earlier led to serious horse race issues. And ultimately who wins said horse race is going to decide whether project 2025 is implemented or not. So if you want the correct policy you need the correct candidate. People are stupid and vote based on vacuous things like whether trhe candidate is charismatic. We can't ignore that and try to force people to listen to "boring" policy arguments. You have to meet people where they're at.

@@IshtarNike no, the news media has a duty to report on proposed policy, at least in the broad strokes. Right now, American media leaves its viewers little else besides optics and charisma to judge the candidates, but it does not have to be this way. A better media landscape would create a better informed voting population who are better equipped to vote in their own interests, rather than the ones dictated to them by the framing of their pundits of choice.

Here in Australia, we have a channel that is a bit similar to Tom Scott by a guy called Julian O'Shea and he speaks about our cities, transport, and border obscurities. He posted a photo maybe a year or two ago on his twitter account with a photo of a huge American pick up truck that was so large it couldn't fit in a lane of traffic in Melbourne with his comment saying something along the lines of 'these cars should not be allowed in Australia'. Every now and again, you see a screenshot of his post floating about Facebook groups with the most bizarre comments from Americans complaining about how the bike lane in the photo needs to be removed so that the lane sizes can be increased so that the vehicle will fit. You see a lot of comments also saying us Australians are communists or soy boys with no guns - stuff like that. These random Americans are absolutely livid in the comments. It's so bizarre. It's like every little thing in the US has been politicised, even things that should be apolitical, like road laws and transport policy. Stuff like this really reminds me of how enormous the cultural gap between us and the US is, even though we often consider the US to be a very similar country. Good luck with your new president - my commiserations.

Limiting expansion completely counters that mechanism, which is critical to economic development, and would stagnate the economy. Expansion can potentially supply consistent cheaper, good quality products across areas that would otherwise not have resources to produce locally. They can create jobs, improve infrastructure, and participate in international trade which is critical for other sovereign nations. Theres always going to be a dynamic of monopoly management but we should maintain the principles that promote development of the economy, not stagnation. If we wanted to get into it, a significant fumble was the Citizens United v. FEC decision in 2010, which allowed large corporations to legally invest unlimited amounts of money into political influence. That opened the door for corporations to wield unprecedented power in shaping political outcomes. Companies like BlackRock exploit this by leveraging their vast financial resources and shareholder networks to influence the media landscape through targeted advertising and strategic partnerships. By funding preferred advertisements and supporting media outlets that align with their interests, BlackRock and similar entities can subtly manipulate public opinion and political discourse, ultimately steering policies and regulations in their favor. This undermines the democratic process, when there were restrictions in place to combat that same issue from the turning of the 20th century with the gilded class.

It’s funny watching this as an Australian where we’ve gone from having no fuel efficiency standards to on the cusp of implementing some of the strictest around and we’re in the process of rolling out approximately $200bn worth of rail infrastructure across our two largest cities which were led by state governments of both progressive and conservative parties. I have never ever understood why “conservative” in the US means you hate public transport - nowhere else on the planet is like that… heck go to Japan where the conservatives have been in charge forever and they LOVE rail.

I'll be totally honest, I watch this channel but I'm not particularly focused on urbanism or creating a car free society. But I still find this channel interesting so I watch it. Project 2025 will likely be a disaster for cities and efficiency but that's not really the biggest issue. The biggest issue is how it will completely undermine the ability of the federal government to accomplish anything long term other than militarism and corruption within the execution branch.
