"But you saved me, as difficult and as frustrating it's been sometimes your god damn strict rationalism and science has saved me a thousand times over. I owe you everything Scully and you owe me nothing" man Mulder has some epic ways of telling Scully he loves her that 'i love you' doesn't have any meaning on this show. It's "i can't risk losing you" "you're my one in 5 billion" "you were my constant, my touchstone" such a romantic fucker. 🥰

"Mulder, I wouldn't put myself on the line for anybody but you." It's such a serious confession, and the prolonged look they give each other afterward tells me they both understand the gravity of those words. What I think is particularly interesting about it is how open she is here with her feelings while he pulls back and tries to laugh it off. Meanwhile, I feel like we see in later seasons that it's Mulder who's more open about his feelings for Scully while she tries to put on a tougher and more guarded demeanor. I often wonder if the reason for this is because, in Mulder's case, he knew what it was like to lose her and then almost lose her again --- and therefore held her closer to his heart. While on the other hand, Scully was traumatized by the awful things that happened to her due to her work on the X-Files and a part of her was afraid to fully open her heart to Mulder.

i don't think he could understand why or believed that she could really be devoted to and have so much faith in him (as he is the opposite of her in terms of reputation and sensibility, and worldview) after everyone letting him down, betraying him or getting hurt. i think scully was more open to maybe having sex, and expected that from a man when she was so open, and also felt drawn to him-but didn't know how deeply it would go into forever love. and she experienced her own loss for the first time, and the gravity of these issues-with being taken and emily. mulder always knew-and scully shortly learned-that having the kind of life they had meant inability to really focus on love and happiness and family, and thats why they shied away from one another as they thought it would mean dissapointment, danger, or distraction.

LOL this was fricken season 1 but Mulder always acts like that because he's out of his comfort zone so he brings sarcastic humour and flirty banter. It's too early to say here that it's love because with Mulder/Scully there was deep respect, connection and admiration before love. They were always closer than friends before they became lovers. But IMO definitely by season 2 and the abduction arc is when you realise just how hard Mulder has fallen for Scully. he was wrecked by her loss and barely functioning. he went back into zombie Samantha loss mode. With Scully I never could pin down the moment but I do think it was Mulder that fell first.
@gibsongirl21007 жыл бұрын
caneytaneywaney5- I always felt the same way. They bonded, trusted and depended on each other pretty much immediately, but it seemed that Scully took the fall first. Although I think Mulder inwardly acknowledged an attraction, he was a little slower to fall, mostly because he was obsessed with the quest, which left little room for a traditional romantic, committed relationship. Also, I think he had a hard time accepting love; he seemed to fear loving and losing people more than he feared dying.
@captiantimecanary69587 жыл бұрын
rochey1010 I'm almost at the end of season 1, I'm watching for the first time, but it does seems like they're already starting to fall... I don't know if it will be sort of a straight off, cliff dive, or a slow far. But you can tell it'll happen... As far as who fell first, I'm leaning towards Scully as well.. Mulder does seem like he likes her, but he doesn't know how to make sense of it yet. And Scully seems to be willing to put a lot on the line for him, as does he for her. I was watching I believe it was 1x20, and I noticed whenever Scully is scared, or when she doesn't know what might come next, she tends to stay close to him. She'll latch onto him, holding onto his jacket, or making sure he's close enough to grab if something goes wrong. That little, "wouldn't miss it for the world." line is sticking with me for some reason. Maybe it's the way she says it, I don't know. But it definitely seems to me, like it was Scully who started to fall first.
@rochey10106 жыл бұрын
I think it's more addressed later on in the series but i can't in my opinion see Scully as falling first because Scully was always very closed off inside and stoic like. She had a great deal of tenderness and affection for Mulder and found him attractive but wouldn't allow herself to fall in love with him. I always saw her as rationalizing her feelings in a more platonic way. She was the scientist after all BUT Mulder from very early on as the more emotional intuitive one had his quest with Samantha but then Scully became the x-file and i think when the quest and Scully merged is when Mulder understood that he couldn't live without her, which is why we see him as a total mess during her abduction arc, and then over protective when she's returned and then totally devoted. I think Mulder completely wore his heart on his sleeve with her from very early on, and even though he's paranoid and finds it hard to trust (justified) he latches on to Scully and opens himself up to her in his hotel room in the pilot episode. He barely knows her but he just unloads and that's unlike Mulder. Even in the early episodes you only have to look at Mulder and how he looks at Scully and you see a greater awareness coming from him. I just think that Mulder was more in touch with his emotions and very exposed with Scully. You see when they're reassigned during Season 2 when they meet up how much he misses her and then when she's taken he totally spirals down and that right there is when you see just how much Mulder loves Scully. And he has no qualms about lack of personal space and being touchy feely. It's totally instinctive from his side but with Scully it's something she ends up adapting to overtime.
@captiantimecanary69586 жыл бұрын
rochey1010 I'm now on season 8, and there are moments you can sort of guess Scully is falling from the pilot till where I am now (8.17), but there are alao moments you can *feel* Mulder falling for her. As you said, in the pilot, he did barley know Scully, let alone fully trust her in the few days he had known her.. And yet, he opens up to her, he tells her details, I'm guessing not even Teena knew, about Samantha's abduction... When Scully went missing, you could see how scared Mulder was, and how much he feared losing her. Melissa knew how Mulder felt for Scully the day she met him, as did her mother.... However, with Scully, I agree with what you said. I do think it was gradual, and maybe it was, as Scully said, like a 'switch was flicked'. But she knew how she felt, she was just scared to fully open her heart up to him, in a way.

rochey1010 According to Chris Carter, Mulder fell for Scully in the pilot. I don't know if I believe that, but I do think it was in season 1. Definitely before this.

My opinion is that when Scully says "I wouldn't put myself on the line for anybody but you", she's openly telling Mulder how important he is to her which clearly touches him though he covers it with a good sense of humor which is partly playful flirting. Scully just goes with it, it is a bit strange of them to cross that line between friendship and love though. But Scully sounds kind of coy as she says that he should go home and get some sleep maybe because it not like them to flirt that way:)

I've always taken this to mean that Scully honestly cares about Mulder, and at this point, she refuses to turn back. She's in for good. Mulder is a little nervous about that kind of commitment, so he responds, typically, with a joke. Scully's response could mean: a) fate will tear their partnership apart and working together is doomed from the start or most likely, b) it's fate that two polar forces would attract each other and bond, and that drink choices are the least of their concerns.
@tinajack444 Жыл бұрын
I have never understood her comment that way. More like, bad luck Mulder, its root beer, but you are right, maybe she means its not love, its fate, they are. ❤

@Rachelspicygirl More in depth response below, but basically: they do talk about how much they love each other. They just don't need to say "I love you" to communicate how deep their feelings are. A touch of the hand, a smile, or a witty comeback is all they need. They both have communication and trust issues, so sharing emotions is difficult. They have a relationship that doesn't require verbal reminders of affection because it's always there.

She already loved him, you can understand that in Rain King: (season 6) while she is talking with that lady about loving a bestfriends, she says "Your bestfriend become the only one person you can imagine yourself with." or something like that... she was obviusly talking about Her and Mulder. In All Things, she decides it, but she already know.

She loved him long before that. I think that was the period in their relationship she decided to make it official. She decided she wasn't going to live her life without him. So, make him the tea he asked for years ago and seal that deal. Great observation, I missed that.

Many people call him Fox. Hell Margaret Scully calls him Fox. What's special is that this Mulder/Scully dynamic is theirs and special. He establishes it when he meets her in the pilot and it goes from there. In this show it's Mulder/Scully that is more intimate than the actual first names. In fact when they do call each other Fox/Dana it's jarring and doesn't feel right. Scully calls him it in S10 when they're on the log with her mothers urn. It doesn't faze him but i think he doesn't like his first name and she's the one he's honest with about that. And she respects those wishes. With everyone else they call him Fox and he goes with it but she matters to him and is special. I like that he wants something different that is unique to them and their bond. And tbh if no one was allowed to call him Fox and then Diana suddenly was saying it all the time, then i'd be pissed but many others called him it throughout to the show. And i'm honestly convinced that he hates his first name. 😄

Probably makes it too personal for him. Mulder is more professional and they both know (very quietly and quickly) if they get to chummy professional and personal lines get blurred and damn it takes them 6 years to get there although they both wanted to go there neither was willing to sacrifice their professional relationship.

I think it's a case that Mulder doesn't mind strangers calling him Fox since they don't know any better. Family tend to insist upon calling you by your birth name anyways - my dad's family call him Michael despite him insisting on others calling him Mick lmao. I feel that Mulder tells Scully to call him Mulder only as a way to keep her at arm's length. He's afraid to get too attached because he's already lost so much, especially his sister. It's just different with Scully because, well... it's _Scully._ She's the only woman to ever take him 100% seriously, no holds barred. I can't really explain it beyond that but I hope you get what I'm trying to say.
