my guinea pig choked to death today and he was only a year old. i wish i was there for him while it was happening, he didnt deserve it and it was my fault and he should still be alive right now and hes buried like 10 feet from my room outside. i am so sad because i loved him so much and theres no way i can bring him back now. i miss him so much.

The same thing happened to my friend's rabbit. She called a vet to say that the rabbit wasn't eating and pooping and the vet told her to wait 24h and to keep an eye on her. But she knew that it was not ok so she called another vet and that one told her to bring the rabbit right away because it was an emergency. The second vet saves the rabbit's life.

My vet is a specialist in small mammals and reptiles. When I noticed my Maves was in stasis (didn't know it had a name at the time) my instincts from having reptiles kicked in and I soaked him in warm water (just enough so his belly could feel the warm water) and gently rubbed his belly. This was the only way he was pooping. I brought this up to the vet and he said he didn't know why he never thought of doing that with a guinea pig since it is protocol with reptiles when they are constipated. Any time I notice Maves not eating or pooping for several hours he gets gas drops and sits in the warm water. It really does help a lot. He hates water but in these instances he just sits there calmly like he knows it is helping him.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have literally saved my guinea pigs life! Arkani (the piggy) had showed the same symptoms as you described - coughing. I went to two different vets and both told me that there was nothing wrong with his lungs. Both also prescribed Baytril to get "rid of anything that might still be there" to cause the coughing. It went fine at first even though the coughing persisted but I thought thar it might needed some time. On Monday, however, I realized that Arkani wasn't running around a lot and was eating less. My gut feeling immediately told me to stop giving him that medicine. After a couple of hours, he still wasn't feeling well and that's when I stumbled upon your video. It was around 9pm and all vets were closed so I immediately drove to an animal clinic which, luckily, specialized in rodents. I told them to make an X-ray to look for any gas in the intestines and sure enough, he had stesis. I went home and spent countless sleepless nights feeding him and giving him medicine. Just today, he started eating on his own and was running around like a happy little piggy. If it wasn't for your video, things could've ended very badly. I am so greatful, so keep up the good work!

I had a Guinea pig that wasn’t eating properly (dropped her favorite treat instead of eating it with relish) and, knowing it was life-threatening if she wasn’t eating almost constantly, I booked an appt. with an exotics vet the next day. Turns out she had too long of teeth and they needed to be filed down. The vet disappeared with her and came back in chit chatting away with us and finally a nurse brought her back in and she gave her to me but she was out of it because of the anesthesia or whatever they gave her. Vet tells me he trimmed them to the nubs so I don’t have to keep coming in so often for trimming. Says she had scurvy. Gave me no instructions or after care and told me to feed her some baby food for a week or two. So I brought my beloved Cocoa into the vet because she couldn’t eat on her own and he trimmed her teeth down to the nubs so she couldn’t eat on her own??? I wasn’t told about critical care, nothing. So I tried hand feeding her for a few days but by then it was so far past the point of saving her and she refused to eat baby food (it gives them gas and bloat!) anymore or anything at all at that point. Critical care is something the pet stores don’t carry…why? And why the hell wouldn’t an exotics vet even mention it to me???? That vet charged me $337 that day - to kill my Guinea pig! She died in my arms and it was probably so painful to starve to death like that! I hate that man and abhor vets who don’t care like that one. Disgusting! Retire then jackass!

Coming up on this video now, I had a guinea pig pass 2 years ago. She was also on baytril for a respiratory infection and they had me feed her only 8ml per 24 hours which is not sufficient at all for a guinea pig now eating. I now have learned from that the hard way based on my own experiences and switching to a new vet. This is super helpful information and if I had found this video then, things may have ended differently . So, for anyone watching, take his word and pay very close attention to your piggies.

Critical care is a huge lifesaver. I have 3 bags of the stuff on hand as well as a few other essential "over the counter" medications for emergencies. I shared this to Cavy Learning on facebook because it's really good information for a lot of breeders and pet owners who may be unaware. My girl Missy was just on Baytril about a week or two ago (8 days worth, spread over 11 days), and luckily it did not cause Stasis; that being said the vet has said there's nothing more that can be done for her at this point, and if she goes downhill again we're best putting her down because it's too much for her to go through much else.

1st, I am so, so sorry for everyone who has lost their Piggies to this issue, to any issue. But, especially this kind, that you were trying so hard to figure out, but couldn't get the right info quickly enough. And, I want to throw an additional sincere thank you for making, sharing this video about a very sensitive painful event in your life. Being very new to owning Piggies, thankfully my daughter and I found you guys on KZbin. Skinnypigs1 gets thanked by me so often now, I am probably annoying the flying spaghetti monsters outta her. But, having lost other pets, probably being far too sensitive, general anxiety issues, I am in constant fear of something bad happening to 1 of our girls. And, knowing how many people lose their Piggies to this, I am enormously grateful to you, Skinnypigs1, everyone who endures speaking on their painful experience to help educate all of us, hopefully vets as well, so we can spread the info, hopefully get this into the common knowledge category, especially among vets! My own Dr proved to me that there is ALWAYS more Drs' need to learn, by poisoning me with Cipro and Levaquin. Just a head's up, they prescribe it for pets as well. Many counties have banned it already because it is so dangerous, damages cells, mitochondria, disables, sometimes permanently, and can kill, speaking as someone w/unfortunate 1st hand experience. I once trusted every medical professional far too naively. Now I know, they are human too, and can make mistakes . So, I am often more than just slightly skeptical about their skills. When we run into one who behaves as if there is nothing they don't know, they are immediately fired, and we move on in search of another. Just remember, if you have taken your Piggies to a vet you thought seemed knowledgable, you were trusting them to be honest with you. If they weren't sure what was wrong, they should ADMIT they aren't sure, and help you quickly seek additional help. It isn't your fault, you took your piggy to someone who convinced you they could be trusted. And, I know, even with the very BEST vets and pet owners out there, and immediate action, measures to save these little ones, at times, no matter how knowledgeable, vidgulent, proactive, you are, at times, they can get soooo sick, sooo fast, no matter how hard you try, you can still sometimes lose them anyway. While that frightens me, I refuse to let it prevent me from having these precious bonds with these amazing little piggies. The benefits and love far outweighs anything difficult. I do wish more people would educate themselves very well BEFORE making the decision to take on becoming what should be a forever care taking role in their lives. That is but 1 of the reasons I feel compelled to express just how very grateful and indebted we are for you guys who make videos to help better educate all of us care takers, and save the lives of these precious little blessings. We appreciate you so sincerely. Please continue to do the good work you do. ❤️

Hi thank you for the video, i just had problems, with my Mr. Piggy fats, he had stopped eating was hunched up hair on end, obviously in pain so i took him to the vets and the "vet" at country side in Canyonville, oregon basically told me he was atressed ans thats why he quit eating, yet she found a lump that was sore whwn she touched it, she gave him Baytril and critical care sent him home about six days later he was way worse so took him to have an xray done it turned out the vet thought the lump was one of his kidneys the first visit and basically told me he needed surgery but sinve he had lost 100g he was to weak she gave him a shot of subutex and semt us home well i did not like how he was acting after five hours at veys office i think they left him sitting not eating i wish i would have stuck up and demanded to stay with him. I think what that supposed vet did caused him to go into shock i did manage. To syringe feed him and when i got home he was way worse early morning he started making this grunt whine sound and he was moving his. Head up and. Down and acting like he was trying to puke he died because of that supposed vet and i feel so. Guilty for not doing more for. Him and not putting my foot down with them. My piggy. Was my best. Friend

Sings will start to show when their eating and drinking less not once they completely stop. We lost one of ours because we didn’t catch it in time. Our vet informed us once they stop eating it can already be to late.

My guinea pig has crusty eyes, is extremely light to the point where I can feel his spine, and a week ago he weighed much more and was just fine. He’s been acting different for the past 3 days to a week I don’t really know when it started he just gradually got to this point but hes normally very energetic and curious and lately he’s just been not interested in anything and stays huddled in a corner most of the time. When he does move he moves very slow and only moves when there’s food, but he only takes a few nibbles here and there and then goes back to his corner. It’s really not like him. he’s making terrible noises that clearly indicate that he is in pain. After doing research I think it must be a URI but we don’t have the money to take him to the vet, any advice on how to treat him without having to see a vet? I’m not sure if it’s stasis or both or anything I just know that I want to get him better. Hope I can get a reply quick because I’ve never had any of my piggies get sick before. I’m very unsure of what antibiotics can help or anything that can help at all. Thank you!
