My brother has a guinea pig whom I treat as my own but I'm allergic to him (found that out after we got him) so I just wash my hands after and don't stay in the room too long named Coco. A few years ago I noticed he was biting and scratching his fur a lot and had a patch where there was barely any fur. I kept coming up to my brother and telling him "I think something's wrong with Coco!!" but he didn't listen. Then my family finally decided to take him to the vet. But sadly, my mom and I couldn't go because I had homework to do :'( . Turns out he had mites. They gave him a shot and sent him home. I am so grateful to have had him this long. My hamster passed away almost a year ago and that's really saddened me. But I just talk to Coco about my feelings and he always listens. He's the best therapist I could ever have. :')

Hi, your video just saved my two babies. They've been scratching for a couple of weeks and progressively loosing hair and I had no idea how serious it was. Thankfully I watched your video, took them to the Vet and a day later they are perfectly fine. We'll go back for another shot in 10 days but they'll already stopped scratching and feeling so much better. Thank you so much for your useful videos and advice. I've been following you and learning a lot but now I also owe you my little girls' lives. Thank you again and please keep uploading your videos. We're enjoying them very much.

Hello, because your piggies are only young it might be better to just keep an eye on them for now. But if you look through the fur and see small whiteish brown things moving then they probably have lice, and it would be best to take them to the vet for a course of ivermectin. The symptoms of mange mites can be very similar to other skin problems so if you monitor them and become certain they are itching more/have dandruff/hair loss I'd take them to the vet then too.

With regard to pet stores, I've wondered if the mite could possibly be dormant for up to a year or longer. And, then, as you say, it could become active when the pet's immune system is compromised--by a URI or, as you suggested, by old age. Mange is certainly an insidious and "opportunistic" infestation. My pig, who died after I'd had him for almost 4 years, was quarantined in his own aquarium when I bought him. The clerk didn't know his age or even the reason he was separated, but "Sparky" was the least skittish and the most handsome. Thanks for the info about treatment (I wonder if it's ever recommended as a preventative measure.) The introduction of mites by a "contaminated" load of hay is an interesting hypothesis--one I'd overlooked, but persuasive.

You can use Virgin Olive Oil to kill mites. 1. Cover pig all over except near eyes and nose/mouth. 2. Gently work/massage oil through fur and onto the skin - work into ears also - for about 10mins. (we could feel small sand like bits on the fur/skin that would stick to your hands as we worked the oil through). 3. Wash piggy. We used small animal shampoo from the pet store. Rinse and dry. Clean cage (we used mite spray from the pet store). 4. Repeat olive oil, bath, rinse treatment a few days later and even a third as we did a few more days later just to be sure. We had excellent results from doing this.

Here's a home remedy to help your guinea pigs skin. Step 1- buy anti-fungal shampoo for people. Sold at walmart. Ask the walmart pharmacist if your not sure where to find it. Also buy Organic coconut oil. Step 2- give your guinea pig a warm bath(Not hot) apply antifungal shampoo all over. Avoid the eyes & mouth! Step 3-Rinse shampoo & Dry off guinea pig Step 4- take 1 or 2 Teaspoons of Organic coconut oil & rub between your hands till it melts. Rub oil all over guinea pigs body, ears, chin & feet. Avoid eyes & mouth. Wash your guinea pig twice a day for the next 2 weeks. Apply coconut oil after each bath. Research Ivermectin oral medication for guinea pigs. You can buy this medicine at many places. Call tractor & supply places & ask. Give your guinea pig the recomended dose of ivermectin for the amount of time the instuctions tell you. Combining these two treatments will be effective & alot cheaper then the veternarian. You can also try 4 Tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar, 1/2 Teaspoon of Dawn dish detergent with 4 cups warm water as the antifungal shampoo. Organic apple cider is very cheap to buy. They sell it in grocery stores & many pharmacys in the food section. Apply coconut oil after drying off your guinea pig. After 2 weeks cut back the baths to 1 time a day for the next two weeks. Also you must clean the cage really good twice per week for the next 2 weeks. Scrub clean everything in cage, wash bowls and water bottles in soapy warm water. Rinse well. Read up on the organic apple cider vinegar & the organic coconut oil. They are both natural antifunal & antibiotic remedys. The Ivermectin oral medication works by killing any infection internally & kills mites & skin fungus underneath the skin. Message me if you have any questions

Hello, so sorry to hear about the poor piggie :( Hair falling out could be mange or it also could be a fungal infection, or perhaps if he isn't looked after properly it could be due to a poor diet. He shouldn't be left with owners that don't care for him, maybe you could offer to rehome him for them? He would need to see a good vet to get proper diagnosis for his fair falling out though. I received a guinea pig from my niece who became allergic to it. I know nothing about them! I'm sure she was stressed at first due to coming to a new home and being with new people. I take good care of her. she sheds like crazy and has some dandruff!!! but I haven't noticed any spots on her skin or hardly any itching. but occasionally at night she does run crazy fast around her cage! today I was holding her and I started getting really itchy and had small red bumps only where her fur touch my skin. this has never happened before and my first thought was great now I'm allergic or she mites. how do I know the difference? I don't want to put her through the trauma of taking her to the vet to be treated for mites if she doesn't actually have them. she's the sweetest guinea ever... but she doesn't do great with new people. when I first got her it took her awhile to warm up to me. it wasn't until she realized she was gonna be fed daily that she decided that she actually liked us and stopped biting us.

I think my piggies have this. I have noticed my new piggy has had a rather large scab on the back of his head and my friend told me that her guinea pigs started itching like that after they went outside and she gave them a bath and the scabs went away. I gave mine and bath and his scab is gone and its just a bald spot and I thought it was getting better and then I noticed a card spot and his rear and I looked to find a bald spot. I don't know if a scab was here before and I didn't notice and it is going away and its just bald now but then my other pig has a spot developing on his nose. they don't scratch as I can see. I abseve them about 10 minutes in a row a couple times a day and I never noticed any irregular scratching, in fact they don't really scratch to much at all. I am worried however they do have it I am going to treat them anyway of course but can someone tell me if that sound about right?

I think i have caught mites in the very early stages in my guinea pig his hair is shedding a little and he is itching certain places. He still has an appetite but has white bump spot type things on his skin. idk if they are scars or borrowed mites. He itches his ear and sides, not often enough to cause damage but often enough to where it would make me think something is bothering him there. I covered him in olive oil to suffocate the mites if there are any. Ive known owners that have used ivermectin and it killed their pigs so I am very worried to use that. Olive oil has very good reviews so far. hopefully it works.

No shampoos or soaps I'm afraid, ivermectin which is absorbed into the skin and kills biting mites. Swelling and closed eye is very concerning and doesn't sound like mites. +Squeak Dreams I have 2 guinea pigs and the dominant piggies has started to lose hair around her back legs I have done some research and the forums I looked at say that if your piggie had mange the skin would be bumpy and itch but my piggie hasn't yet shown these signs and I thought it would be that the other less dominant piggie has pulled the hair out of her but this made no sense as the piggie with hair loss is dominant please help xxx

Hello I have three gunie pigs and we used to have bird mites that can spread to guinea pigs, and they don’t itch a lot but I have seen them itch before, and they all have LOTs of dandruff sometimes I bathe them a lot (then I found out it’s not that good for them) so I recently stopped and the symptoms have gone done is this because of the baths or mites because thes mites we’re back in June and there is no missing hair, or wounds and me and my dad were sure they didn’t have them I am very scared they may have them can you help me out a bit?
@SqueakDreams4 жыл бұрын
Hi - I haven't heard of bird mites being passed to guinea pigs, piggies only have specific mites that go on guinea pigs only. There are types of guinea pig mites or skin conditions that cause dandruff, so if it is bad I think you should take them to the vet to get some parasite treatment (called ivomectin), if it doesn't go away after that it could be a fungal infection or psoriasis, your vet can advise on treatment 😊

Hi! I just got my new guinea pig and I suspect that he has lice or mites. I found small bugs/animals crawling on him. They were lime green and they had a circular ovalish body with a small round head. Could u please tell me what that is. Thanks!

My guinea pig went from a lovely fat state to balding and scabby. Went to the Vet and got Revolution and she picked up but then appeared to slip back. I have dosed her again and now although still a bit scruffy looking still she is gaining weight, happier and I think on the improve. I think she would benefit from a bath and I believe Malaseb shampoo is very good? She does have a bit of scruffy stuff between her eyes so would it be ok to just wipe her between the eyes during her bath being careful not to let any get in? We have two other piggies and they are fine but I have separated Doris Day (the sick one) from them.
@SqueakDreams9 жыл бұрын
Willowgirl Sounds like she is making a good recovery - it was mange then? The other pigs will need to be treated even if they are separated and don't have symptoms. And yes we should never let their head/eyes/ears get very wet during bath :)
@lynfairbairn9 жыл бұрын
I see I repeated myself in a comment/question, so sorry for that...Doris still is pretty scabby but I bathed her today and her appetite has certainly not been altered at all. I did notice she has a bit of scabby stuff inside her ear. I will give her a couple more days and think a trip to the Vet is in order. Thanks for your great advice.

Your videos are so informative! I wanted to see if you have anything you can share regarding guinea pig food allergies. My guinea pig is about 6 months old and I noticed the other day that he had a big cut on his back. I got very nervous and thought maybe he scratched it so much that it cut his skin open. He does seem to be scratching and biting more than normal but I am not sure if it is from mites. I do have a variety of treats I give him, and as you mentioned in your ten tips for new owners, I thought maybe it could be these colorful treats causing his skin to itch. I plan on giving him no treats tomorrow to see if the itching goes away. Do you think this is a good idea? Also, could they be allergic to carrots; I give him a carrot almost every day but am not sure if this could possibly be a cause. Any help or advise would be great! I still want to bring him to the vet, but would love to hear your thoughts!
@SqueakDreams11 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, My feeling is that the most likely cause is a skin problem or mites/lice rather than allergies. I'd never heard of a guinea pig scratching because of food allergies. Does he live alone? It could be an injury from another piggie if they are fighting. I'd get him to the vets right away for a course of Ivomectin, then at least that rules out parasites if he doesn't get better, and if it is mites his recovery will be quick :) You'd have to thoroughly clean his cage and all his things too. Hope this helped! Let me know how he gets on :) - Sarah

I think my pigs have mites and I have no clue how they got it. The boys (the ones scratching) were literally born in this room and I've had my girls for a long time. They have had no exposure to any other animals so it had to have come in from their food (I use fleece bedding)
@SqueakDreams10 жыл бұрын
If the symptoms fit with mange then the adult piggies may have had the mites lying dormant, treat them with ivermectin - for the young ones you need to be very careful with the dose.

Thank you so much for the Mange Mite treatment video. My girlfriend Melissa loves you accent and your videos. We are treating our sweatheart Guinea pig Patricia today Zeno450. I have a quick question. We have a cat and a dog. Can the mites spread to them or to us at all?
@SqueakDreams10 жыл бұрын
Awh thank you :) The most common species of mite are specific to guinea pigs so they can't be passed onto any other animal (inlcuding us!). Some rare types might be more general but the likelihood of your piggie having them is very low. Search "guinea lynx parasites" to read more :)

hi i recently had my guinea pig out to play and for some lap time and noticed these little white specks in her fur i carefully took one out and looked at it and its not moving and looks like dry skin and i was wandering if you know any ways that could naturally cure her or if you know what it is. i looked at her skin and there is nothing i could really see that was wrong is it just early sim-toms of something or is it just dandruff ( sorry this is so long) Thank You.

Hi. Could you please advise me as I'm new to guniea pig, my piggies are about 3 months old and I noticed this morning there was some little tiny bugs near there hay and cage. I'm not too sure what they were or how to get rid of them and if my piggies need treatment.
@SqueakDreams3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, mites and lice will not come off the guinea pigs and you wouldn't see them crawling around the cage, so probably some other pest - maybe something out of the hay? Occasionally I see very small bugs but only ever one or two and I assume they've come out of the hay. If you notice your piggies itching a lot that's when you need to check them out for either running lice or mange mites.

I am getting two guinea pigs this week and I just wanted to ask can u use ivermectin on ur piggies just in case they do have mange mites? And will it work for lice as well?
@SqueakDreams9 жыл бұрын
Chardonnay Cooper Yes you can - but be VERY careful with the dose - an overdose for baby piggies can cause neurological damage! If you become concerned they have mites/lice take them to the vet.

I just found out my 8 month old guinea pig has mites. I took her to the vet and he did a skin scrape and gave him an injection of ivermectin and I have to go back in 7 days for another injection and for a total of 4 injections 7 days apart. He was highly stressed by the vet visit and has been having seizures. Do you know if the injections are better than the oral treatment? How often should I change his bedding and cage? Thank you! Great video on the treatment of mites.

I think my guinea pig might have mites! so I'll be taking him soon to the vet. How much did it coast you for the vist and the treatment, the overall price?
@SqueakDreams10 жыл бұрын
The injections make sure the medicine definitely gets into them and is more direct :) Change everything out after each treatment - the second third and fourth injections kill off the young of any eggs that may have hatched :)
@SqueakDreams10 жыл бұрын
Daniela Martinez About £30 per pig - Or you can order ivermectin online in the form of Xeno 450, but if you have young piggies take them to the vet because the dose must be very precise and an overdose can cause neurological problems in young piggies. The cost shouldn't be a consideration in whether to take him/her or not - mange mites can and will kill, therefore you MUST treat them.
