I worked for LTPB between 1965 to 1974 in the building section based at Junction Road. The two main lines I worked on were the Edgware and High Barnet. When the trains would pull in we would speak to the guards to keep the doors open longer so we could get building materials in to take from one station to the other. One day we tripped getting into a coach and we dropped these bags of cement and they burst, the passengers got covered in cement. We also had a black gang, that repaired the bitumen on the platforms, we used to push the hand rollers into the coaches to take to another station, this particular day we pushed it in and it went through the floor of the coach, needless to say we were not the flavour of the month. Being a carpenter I did a lot of restoration work for LT, the biggest one was when the fire went through Totteridge station. I have lots of different stories I could tell. I still say working for LTBP was the best job I ever had. John.

The 70's were interesting on the Northern Line. They kept the best condition 1938 Stock, and introduced the two fleets of 1972 Stock, Mk2 with red painted doors, Mk1 unpainted, so it was anyone's guess what type of train was going to turn up!! Eventually the 1938 Stock gave way to 1959 Stock off the Piccadilly, which also displaced the 1972 Mk2 Stock to the Jubilee Line via the Bakerloo. The Northern was, eventually the last line to operate 1938 Stock, as after the last Bakerloo example had been withdrawn, five trains were reinstated on the Northern Line in the peaks, until 1989.

I couldn't help but think of some preserved pre-war IND subway cars here in New York...and then I looked and found that they're from the same era. Only some of those old IND cars are actually owned by the New York Transit Museum, but through certain deals, there are enough to operate a single 8-car train for a special weekend service toward the end of the year. This particular service is open to the public (just pay the fare as if you were using any other route), unlike most excursions.

What's that winning sound at 7:30 as the doors open? I also hear it on the northern line.
@CitytransportInfoplus4 жыл бұрын
thats the compressor - the doors were air powered (and so were the brakes) and that sound is the machine which creates the compressed air that these need - to those of us who actually travelled on these trains hearing that sound (plus the starting and ending sounds) adds authenticity. Some trains still have these, so its still possible to hear this sound today (2020) eg: Class 315 trains, 1972 tube stock, Class 455 - all of these trains are used in various parts of London

They were a bit like the IND museum train sonicboy678 mentions - all sorts of oddments coupled together, clerestory-roofed 1920s cars contrasting with streamlined ex-1930s stock - those were the ones with the Art-Deco lampshades. My favourite Q stock carriage was a 1923 driving-motor with a completely flat front that made it resemble a goods-van (the clerestory didn't curve down at the ends), very high-backed transverse seats, old-fashioned bell-shaped lampshades, brass-scrollwork ventilators and some quite elaborate wood panelling. I don't think the drivers and guards liked it much, though: there was a wooden destination-board instead of a roller-blind, the driving-cab was very narrow, and the guard was hidden away in an equally cramped cubby-hole with non air-operated doors; I remember it always used to start with a huge lurch, even compared with the almost equally ancient driving-motor at the other end of the train.

I'm not a train geek but I'm fascinated by these particular trains. There's something about them, maybe it's because they're from an era when my grandparents were children. I might have to visit the Isle of Wight just to have a ride on one.

The old trains look like a bus
@CitytransportInfoplus2 жыл бұрын
Only these trains had those closely spaced bus style seats. Especially tall adults were too big for them - not enough leg room (just like aircraft seats). This did not worry me when I used them as I was a teenage schoolboy.

Are these trains still used on this line or is it just one train that comes out of a museum every now and then? I know they're still used for now in the IOW.

London still has trains that size. In Glasgow, Scotland, their Subway trains are even smaller!

@@kilianb.3859 there are 2 diffrent types of london underground trains: subsurface (which are larger and run quite close to the streets above since they were tunneled with the cut and cover method, the subsurface lines are circle, hammersmith and city, metropolitian, district.) Then u have the deep level trains which is smaller since the tunnels they were designed to fit into was cut by tunneling shields and were very deep underground (the 1938 stock is part of this) the deep level lines are bakerloo, victoria, jubilee, northen, picadilly, central, waterloo and city. (I cant remember if i missed any out).

People were often smaller, I can remember old people as a kid in the sixties, who were shorter and smaller than my parents, who were born before the second world war.

First of all, in 1938 video quality was better than today's HD, but due to the fact it's old and filmed on old cameras it appears bad quality.
