My great great Uncle Marcus Daly founded & built Anaconda. I have never visited but must one day. I have been told that he named the streets after his mine workers. I am sure he would be sad to know that he left a toxic environment behind.

Wow!!!! That's a pretty cool family history. I think those people back then had little to no concept of nature as a finite resource. They built amazing industries though. I hope you get to visit the town someday. It's pretty cool and I bet you'd get a few free drinks. -H

I think in your channel I just found the motivation I need to get back on the treadmill. My husband has roots in Anaconda and Butte. He grew up in Butte and considers himself a Montanan. We have visited a few times. I find these old mining towns and their history fascinating. My husband's grandfather was a chef at the Montana Hotel in the 1920's. I loved taking the walk.

Thank you for the walk through my old stomping grounds. My great grandfather (KELLY) built the gray Dutch Colonial house on the corner at 300 Hickory. It was pale yellow when my family lived there following the passing of our grandparents parents passed in the 1950's. I had the good fortune to live across the street from the beautiful Anaconda Commons Park and skate on that magical, frozen rink. The Christmas tree was much taller then, but I am thankful that they have retained the tradition. The small, open building frame on the side towards the mountains was an enclosed warming house, painted white, with a steel fired stove in the middle. Standing too close one day, I burned a spot on a new coat. One year during the summer a major event unfolded in the Commons Park: "the Indians" set up tee-pee's in and around the park perimeter for a centennial celebration. I am ashamed not to know the tribe name. In any event, I was about 5 (before TV) and frightened - my Dad took my hand and walked me across the street to meet an Indian woman in the tent so that I would not fear them. The beautiful Montana Hotel was in tact, complete with glass caged elevator "lifts" on either side of the lobby tended by smartly uniformed elevator operators. The formal dining room was on the corner closest to the Post Office. The family often enjoyed a Sunday afternoon, white table cloth dinner with my grandmother. I still remember the chicken soup course w/Melba toast and butter. My father, and his father, owned a furniture store (Fisher-Hopwood), now a vacant lot across the street from the Post Office. My uncle owned a mortuary and was an officer at the bank. I had the unique experience of performing as "Eve" as a 1st or 2nd grader in my school (St. Paul's) Christmas play, held at the Washoe Theater! Such vivid memories are a gift. Hope I didn't bore everyone. It is heartbreaking how many genuinely incredible buildings were demolished, but very thankful that the town has a historical society in place to preserve what remains. My family left Montana in the early '60's and we have lived in various cities across the US since. My brother and I hope to meet up and walk the old neighborhoods once again in summer 2023. Do you have plans to be back in Anaconda then?
@CityWalks2 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks so much for sharing all those wonderfully vivid memories. Must have been a completely different world back then. I don’t currently have any plans for summer 2023 so I don’t really know. Glad this video brought back and stirred up some old memories. And thank you again for sharing them with the rest of us. Take care. - H

Thank you so much for this beautiful walk!! I was born in Anaconda but we moved when I was in grade school. We often go to visit! The Anaconda Co that owned the smelter and mines was owned by Marcus Daly and had investors such as William Randolph Hearst. The library was donated to the town by Phoebe Hearst. If you get back there take a tour or see a show at the Washoe Theatre, the interior is amazing!!

Spent a lot of time in Anaconda working on the remediation of the Superfund/Smelter. We buried lots of nasty materials. The ore was mined in Butte and smelted in Anaconda. Very little if any mining in Anaconda. Anaconda and Butte are their own world, not like any other place in Montana. Actually 1898 when the court house was build was the time of the largest population in the Anaconda/Butte area. 1900 Butte's population was around 100,000. It is now 34,500 for the entire county. Copper made this entire area. License plate #1 county is Silver Bow (Butte).
