Just wanted to say ursa - quality video, but I would argue the way you normally play civ Is the definition of optimal. You embody the spirit of the game - dealing with inconvenience, harsh rng, early war declarations, and then snatch victory from the Jaws of defeat. I think your opportunism and ingenuity is what makes you my undisputed king of civ. That's the reason i have binged your content long after I found everyone boring. You are closer to the real leaders depicted in the game than any optimiser - and the most entertaining by far.

As I watch your vids I am still amazed how you suddenly get 30+ yields in science or culture or early gold when it matters. Other than the gold, I truly don’t know how you do it. I do breakdown analysis on your vids to make sure you aren’t cheating, but I learn so much from doing so. I won my first diety game copying your Sweden start. Etemenaki and a crazy high food start. Good video. One point that is important to make, is that this map/game setup is super uncommon. I know you were trying to avoid randomness in your game for the purpose of the guide, but in doing so you have sort of represented a very rare situation. The vast majority of games are played on continents/pangea/highlands/wetlands type maps that are more action packed - more players closer to each other, with more encounters and more interactions. Thats the normal. The mirror map, while interesting for its uniqueness, is itself incredibly uncommon. Also most people play with at least 6 players, or more - making the game much much harder as the great people and wonders become much harder to secure. Also seonduck is pretty OP science civ and her campus design is quite unique .... I would like to see you attempt this guide playthrough for a strong scientific start and focus that uses a civ with regular campuses to demonstrate the build order and positioning process for a regular campus that every other civ will be using. On average against diety, players can expect to get early rushed and attacked, and that won't happen on mirror so its not the best representation. Ideally you'd play a map with players closer ( pangea map) and with at least 6 players, ideally 8. Also the 100science by turn 100 concept is really not something that a regular player should aim for at the expense of other things like culture and production/population or city spread. You made a big focus on that 100by 100 objective at the expense of your overall progress in the game and players attempting to get a diety win, shouldn't be doing those sacrificial plays for this 100by 100 goal. It may be that to make the best guide for a science start on pangea with 6-8 players, that you need to reroll a few games to get a proper average start, but I think that would be worth doing!
@UrsaRyan Жыл бұрын
Don't confuse this guide for an overall good play guide for the reasons you've identified! I thought I'd explained enough but to reconfirm, this is a very particular guide showing off a particular style of play that is a good thing to learn to add to your overall arsenal. Map and play style was chosen specifically to eliminate randomness. Think of this not as a science victory guide - it's a sandbox to specifically teach 100 by 100 play, which if you master will feed back into your general gameplay = )

@absolutefolly2011 Жыл бұрын
its not that great, its just a strong early game bonus that falls off hard in late game as you end up removing most marshes. In this game, reeds was prob not the best choice tbh - but it fit his goal which was strictly early game to get 100science by 100 turns. In a proper game, you would probably want to go for the more powerful late game scaling pantheon here. Settler, growth rate, or craftsmen

"this is going to be a peaceful game" is the 7 most dangerous words a player can say going into a game. Exhibit A: I wanted to do a peaceful game (my last game was a huge dramatic ages domination run that I said F it & pivoted to launching the space dong towards the outer planets) so I started a rough rider Teddy game on a small highlands map with Civ Expanded. That was the first mistake. RR CE Teddy gives you a free melee unit every time you settle a city on your home continent. My home continent is absolutely massive and I had 8 cities by the classical era. Mistake #2: Akkad. Oh god I suzed Akkad almost instantly. This was a mandate from the universe. And Babylon settled in range of colosseum. He had to go. So he did when I threw a ton of man-at-arms at his cities. This did come back to bite me in the buns though. He claimed Donatello and I need Pizza Party.... :(

I always ponder the utility of building builders to chop versus building things directly, building them early versus building them later with 5 or 6 charges while using the early game to focus on industry.
@chrisblake4198 Жыл бұрын
Turns spent hard building something are turns spent not having the thing it gives (the yield, or GP points, what have you). Get it done fast, then you have the benefits of the new thing plus the flexibility to work on something else. I'll always take 15 extra turns of a new district over 15 turns of whatever yield the forested tile got me. Builders are always one of the most efficient things you can get, even without extra charges so waiting just slows you down.
@absolutefolly2011 Жыл бұрын
it always depends. Some chops are worth waiting for, some are not. There is no 1 formula that works for every occasion. It just takes experience to know what is worth and what is not worth. Or some extensive math

Some details I would like to point out if possible: At 14:53 the reason he moves to the wood tile with the warrior it's not only because it will be a perfect match for when code of laws it's researched but also because you get a defense bonus from the terrain as he mentioned with the river, in case the outpost spawned anything and attacked, his warrior will have a penalty at defending for being on a floodplain tile + the difficulty penalty. It's things you should consider in higher difficulty settings! On prince and lower I think you should be more than fine! Also when Code Of Laws it's researched he chose God King, because he wants to start earning faith for the Pantheon! Most of time, if you don't find a relic, or have a faith yeield civ in the begining or a tile with faith you want to work, or even a first meet on a faith city state this will be your only hope to get a Pantheon! If you already have a source you might want to go for the production, depending on your strategy, but God King it's always a good choice!

No matter what I do and how much I try diplomacy, I always get dragged into 1 or multiple wars around turn 50-60. It's not rare that I am fighting 2 or sometimes even 3 people at the same time. I learned to not die to those wars but it slows me down so much that me and the opponents I am fighting fall so far behind. Last attempt it took me until turn 170 just to catch up to the other AIs. On top of that I can't grab any wonders and getting more settlers out is difficult as I need every piece of production to defend :( I tried quite a few times now and I just can't manage to avoid war or get out of it fast enough.

@UrsaRyan Жыл бұрын
RNG stands for random number generator! It's how most games deal with probability - if there is say a 30% chance for something to happen, the game will generate a number from 1 to 100 and then look to see if it's above or below that threshold. I think it's where it comes from! Essentially I'm just trying to create a game where chance has minimal effect = )

I actually had a plan but I forgot to pin it! I wanted to keep the copper and wood to the right of it free because I had a small plan for a IZ set up later in the game I was thinking aqueduct onto the copper and a city below utter mellon on the tundra that would aqueduct onto the tundra sheep - that would leave a double IZ set up for the new city and capital between. I rarely pin that far ahead because strategics always ruin your day, but that's what I had in mind... and why I pushed the seowon up a little bit! The aqueduct was the main reason though. I suspected I might aqueduct on the copper tile from the capital so I wanted to leave the seowon out of that range

That's it! It's how most games deal with probibility - if there is say a 30% chance for something to happen, the game will generate a number from 1 to 100 and then look to see if it's above or below that threshold. I think it's where it comes from!
