So a theme I've been seeing in the comments is about whether or not I should have been bee-lining wonders given the start location. Etemenanki, Great Bath and Temple of Artemis (amongst others) were all fantastic wonders for this location, I can't deny that! Things to remember here. 1) Production is king, and I had very little production. My capital specialised on food and gold, so I wanted to grow pop (not build wonders) to get Pingala in place more effectively 2) The trick to any domination themed empire is army, army, army. What little production I had (and gold) I used to get slingers and warriors, not wonders. This tactic is very beneficial to me long term - just wait till next episode! 3) Wonders are shiny, wonderful, amazing things. DON'T LET THEM DISTRACT YOU. The number of ruined runs that clock up from a lack of growth, expansion or army caused by ill considered wonder construction never ceases to amaze me! If you have a tactic, IGNORE THE SHINY THINGS - stick to your tactic and execute! Besides, you can always build wonders later with the spoils of war. Or steal them...!
@chrisblake4198 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you. This video is about mastering the basics, and you're doing great at establishing what those are. Wonders are situational gameplay and you can go after them when circumstances allow, but it pays off to understand what a solid basic progression looks like, then you're better prepared to see when a Wonder is a good alternative once you have the experience. Optimizing around Wonders means your entire game can get thrown off when you don't get them, leaving you to either give up or fail if you don't know how to recover back to a solid baseline.
@vladeathell Жыл бұрын
But Ursa, they SHINEYY! :) I cannot agree more, I've messed up my early game by going exactly for Elemetanki or TOA which leaves me with some gold for the wasted production, less cities and no army ... then someone like Tomyris or Kublai come and you are dead before you know it

I think the right settle location was on the coast. It was still fresh water from the river, but also would have gotten you the sailing eurekaa, a decent adjacency harbor down the line, and a place to build galleys. Then the maize would be left open to build a farm and get the irrigation eureka for your cotton and spices. It would have put the 2/2/3 truffles in your first ring to work by your initial pop, much better than your naked grassland hill. And before the horses showed up, floodplains plus stone resource automatically had me thinking aquaduct/dam/quarry/industrial zone which would have fit perfectly into a coastal settlement.
@Dutch_is_a_Weird_Language Жыл бұрын
I second this. You you have a setup for a couple of good Industrial Zones, and you can build Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in the Capital (where you are likely to establish Pingala) for a great amount of yields, ànd extra charges on the Great Engineers that those Industrial Zones will earn you

This is another great settle, totally agree! My aim was to go for something that gave me gold from the off but also played into my quick expansive set up. Anything involving wonders or IZ set up just takes too long - by the time either of those are done my army will have already begun it's march. Remember to stick to the strategy, don't get distracted by the shiny things! XD

I understand that wonders aren't the priority when planning early game war, but it's hard to ignore that +8 amenity Temple of Artemis location adjacent to Paris (the NW tile), especially when the AI is notorious for choosing less than stellar locations for such wonders (those whose benefits depend on their location; Colosseum, Petra, Huey Teocalli, etc.).

Honestly, I would've settled in place. Mostly because you could've damned the Meuse and Rhine in such a way that Industrial Zones would get a minimum of +5, which could've been coupled by an aqueduct placement that settling in place would've made available to you, alongside one from your second city, to make a +10 IZ. Combine that with Craftsmen/5 Year Plan & a Coal Power Plant, and that's +20 production in the range of that IZ.
@UrsaRyan Жыл бұрын
If industrial zone adjacency was the aim here than yes, that would have worked! Don't forget the aim though, we're going to war. By the time dams and IZs are around we'll be LONG past this point of it being useful
@talosisoursavior3061 Жыл бұрын
25:25 worth noting that the "first impressions" modifier decays over time, so when combined with mutual open borders, sending a delegation even when they will still dislike you to start can speed up how many turns it takes for them to be willing to send a delegation. This is also good because as soon as they dislike you, you are no longer able to send a delegation, which is awkward when you need to send a delegation for them to like you. In general I would always send a delegation if you don't mind losing the 25 gold, especially when you are making 14 gpt.

I am surprised you didn't go for the coastal turn 2 settle which is much higher production. Ok, lose era score from not settling the floodplain, but eureka for sailing, immediate access to the ocean and you bring both hills into the first ring, and importantly, immediately you can work the truffles tile. By settling on the Maize you got the 2 gold but you'll probably have to spend the gold on tiles to get your civ developing faster.

25:19 You say it's not worth "wasting" the gold on sending a delegation if the relationship is bad, but then go on to explain sending a delegation grants a level of diplo visibility. To anyone new to civ: I actually think scout start is better because of friendly meeting civs, they don't fuss with a scout on their borders, and they move faster getting those goody huts on the way -- tempo is everything in CIV. Sooner you meet civs, sooner you're trading luxuries, diplomatic favor, excess strategics etc, speeding up your game. But most of all: Meeting city states. They're that powerful, they're how you win One City Challenges, and their utility is essential from first to last turn. First meeting gives you one envoy, which adds gold, production, science and culture etc to capital. Also faith that might be essential for securing a contested pantheon, too. If you go Amani+diplo league, along with envoy earning via quests, you can easily move her around giving you multiple "first suzerain" era score to guarantee golden age on classical. With that, you could have their powerful unique bonuses like improvements, levying units to rush someone, or if early enough, even declare war on them with no major repercussions - except losing envoys, the sooner the better, though - for some quick pillage and xp farming (like setting up double shot archers), etc. You might even witness a CS builder repairing some improvements for a quick gold plunder again. Your stat snowball comes from multiplying buildings and CS bonuses too, a synergy that makes them both much more valuable from the start. Imagine a doable start with 3 libraries x 3 first tier (1 envoy) on science city-states: the resulting bonus (=12, with 3 being applied on capital) is the same as having 6 libraries more! Last but not least, there are endgame cards that give you +5% science or(/and) culture per suzerain, coupled with the relatively early and obtainable Kilwa Kisiwani wonder that awards a empire-wide +15% to a stat that you have two suzes of the type, it's through CS that you snowball hard and slingshot past deity AI, the sooner the better.

I would have played the early turns differently in 2 ways. Firstly I would have settled on the grassland coastal tile. This would have started with one of those truffles tiles (2 production, 3 gold, 2 food), given me the seafaring boost and enabled the irrigation boost. Secondly, and this especially for the illustrative purposes of your game, I would not have unlocked animal husbandry until after settling my second city. I am always careful about that tech and bronze working because of the way they ruin early plans. You were lucky that there was a nearly as good alternative but it does force you to locate your government centre there. This has implications if you want to span settlers later. In the scenario you lay out, it is vital to have the government plaza in the same city as the first encampment, i.e. your capital.
@UrsaRyan Жыл бұрын
Strategic resources only ruin district adjacency plans - if you're worried about those in a war based game, either you're not moving fast enough or you're not playing adaptive enough! For instance, my capital didn't get the government center, but it meant it could pump out troops and an encampment whilst my two cities in the north did the science and got +5 campuses. Never get too focused on plan A. Improvising is key!
