One thing in defense of Great Zimbabwe: the AI NEVER builds it, so you can often pick it up late into the game. In my current portugal game I stacked it and Torre de Belem into the same city and got some amazing trade routes.

The true use of Great Zimbabwe is it draws all the AI's spies to try to steal your cash. Put a spy down with the counterspy mission, get promotions and lock them all up so they can't harass you any more.

Things that are too low: Kilwa(great suzerain payoff), Eiffell and Cristo(one two late-culture deathblow), Mausoleum(the water petra+engineer charges, never fail to build if i can). Things that are too high: Macchu(worthless, Ai rushes it, you can get better IZ adj, CH adj is weak, TS adj theres a better way), Broadway(Cristo is just better, seaside resorts can turn builder charges into piles of tourism), Taj(Golden ages are overrated) Favorite play: In a culture game, if you want adjacency for theatre squares its very easy. Imagine a 1 radius hex. The top hex is an EC required for the Colosseum in the dead center. Nestled on the sides are TS that get +4 adj, the bottom can be an another EC but preferably one of the numerous culture wonders. I go for it most culture games because all i need is to plan settles and have one nice spot of flat land. The payoff is +8 culture, +12 amenities, two High adjacency TS with two on the way, and later on a well placed zoo. I built it in my first culture win with the Cree and think about it whenever im not island bound or pressed into a line.
@samuelhakansson6680
@samuelhakansson6680 28 күн бұрын
Agree, Machu is trash. AI nearly always gets it first, and even if you could use mountains for adjacency, why would you? I have it in my current game (first time in ages that I managed to get it), and sure, I do put some TS around mountains. But mountains are not everywhere, so in total I got like.. 10-15 extra culture out of the adjacencies? Sounds good, but I am sporting around 300 atm in the renaissance, so this hardly makes a dent. Honestly, I actually built it because I needed era score and figured I could get it for fun to boost a late game natural park, lol.

I don't heavily disagree on your take an Alhambra but I would point out that both merchant republic and democracy have only one military policy slot and if you are going culture or science, you might want to have things like logistics, military research, integrated space cells, limes, veterancy. If it frees a wild card slot for you, it kinda becomes another Forbidden City.

In any game where I go super wide and have a lot of faith I consider Eiffel, because I often don't have a lot to spend faith on late in the game except for occasional great people. So building national parks for the amenities can be worthwhile. It's easy to do with Peter and if you play Mali and roll Nazca you can use the Nazca lines to increase appeal and give you good yields, making otherwise worthless deserts into powerful tiles that work for you.

I think kilwa is better than machu and they should swap places because: -You get more often good kilwa with two citysates of your victory type than you get machu because AI loves rushing machu -Kilwa with two for example cultural citystates gives more culture than machu ever could -Kilwa and two production states is basically auto win on any difficulty -Machu can give you only culture, production or gold -Kilwa can give every resource as long as there is enough citystates on map and you have enough envoys

I give Machu loads of extra point in my head for just needing mountains. Which you either have or you don’t. Kilwa has a much higher ceiling but I often find it has a pretty low floor as well. Estadio is S tier. 2 amenities in every city can be useful in every game. If you have at least 10 cities it is a must have, and imo you should have at least 1 entertainment complex for every 4-6 cities anyway. Late game great engineers can help you snag it even if you have low production in a city.

Like Amundsen Scott, 20% greater overall science is massive, except for the fact that by the time you get it there are like maybe 50-60 turns left in the game? I caught the Venetian Arsenal bug from Quill. It is handy to have lots of sea power to roll up cities near the coasts and defend your shores. I am usually just discouraging aggressors while winning non-domination games (and it is nice to prevent another civ from getting it). On the Mausoleum: I value it for the extra great engineer charge (getting 2 boosts from the space race engineers is just fun). (just moved up into emperor difficulty).

Had a game as Basil where I spawned next to Fountain of Youth with a large desert nearby. Desert Folklore and Work Ethic gave me some nice cities, and I build Jebel for tons of iron, so as soon as I unlocked Tagma I began pumping them out of my cities in a never ending wave until I defeated everyone. If you’re playing as Portugal, I’ve found that the Venetian arsenal plays really well with the Nau unique boat that you can build, because with only 2 builds, it’s exceptionally useful to that particular play style to be able to spread your feitoria buildings twice as fast. But that’s a fairly specific set of circumstances that makes the VA useful 😂😌

Then you can then agree or disagree with your initial statement/analysis and why it changed or stays the same. comparing "where you were as a civ player then and where you are as a civ player now" so we as a viewer can watch how your ideas and development as a civ player progresses :) Love your work keep it up homie !

My Capital City Spawned Like 2-3 tiles away from the Bermuda Triangle and to make things even better there was this long mountain range on my continents coast on where i spawned that the only thing i had to do was block a few chokepoints and all my cities were safe aswell and i could literally raid anyone i wanted with my navy. I was probably at war with 5 other civs (large map 10 civs) on the other continent and they could do nothing to me as whenever they would try to cross the ocean they would get annihilated. And i could settle on their coasts if i wished with impunity because of my navy.

Not sure if this would affect your rankings at all. But a couple of weeks ago on Boes' stream we discovered that if you capture a city that has Angkor Wat, it does increase the housing in all your cities (though it doesn't increase your population). Not sure if that also means you get increase housing if you settle later cities.
@webbowser8834
@webbowser8834 2 жыл бұрын
So Angkor Wat's population increase is a one time thing on build, while the housing increase is a permanent empire wide effect. So any future cities built with Angkor Wat will have the housing increase, but not the extra pop. As a wonder, it's fine. Not great, I pretty much never prioritize it, but the map-wide +1 pop isn't a bad effect if the circumstances line up.

You can get max iron literally every turn, so selling it to far away AI is amazing. Machu Picchu is a situational wonder so it is an occasional build for me. If you have lots of mountains it is good if not it is close to useless. Plus you frequently use mountains for holy sites and campuses if you don't have any better options like natural wonders and reefs to build next to so it really only helps with theater squares which you can use wonders and entertainment districts better anyways. On the dramatic game mode Taj Mahal is an always build but otherwise it is a "would consider in most games" for me. Not overpowered like MoH w/ the extra yields and engineer charges or the Colosseum with its insane amount of amenities you can build your empire around it for or the Kilwa's insane yields with such an easy way to get it. The only way Kilwa isn't a must get is if you turn off city states or have a very small amount which most games aren't set up that way. I would put down those two wonders as I described and bump up the other 3 as S tier wonders. Otherwise a pretty solid list.

Hey, double boat venetian arsenal is cool! Is it practical? No, not really, but double boat in any city is Fun! You can leave ships separate to cover more ground, or combine them into corps easily without a seaport. I'd put venetian arsenal into the "might build for fun once" catagory, just to see two boats come out and combine them to wreck those barbarian ship pockets that have been building up since the beginning of the game :P practical? Not really, but might build once for fun? Yes! It's fun!

I think you need to play more games on naval maps. For me the top tier wonders, that I always go for if I can, are Forbidden Palace, Oracle, Pyramids, Estadio, Kilwa, Eiffel and Mausoleum. I rate Pyramids, Palace, Kilwa and Mausoleum as the very best (that extra charge on every great engineer, including ones you currently have, is amazing!). I also like Temple of Artemis and Colosseum very much. I normally go for Great Lighthouse. I only play on deity with highest environmental disasters and this makes diplomatic victory easy. My last game, won in 212 turns with no modes on, using Statue of Liberty (Scythia). I had 22 diplomatic victory points and was 5 turns away from another 2. Incidentally, the best mode of all is shuffle mode, which reduces the game's ridiculous level of predictability.

For Taj Mahal, he mentions "AI usually doesn't rush it" as a motivation. Was the "ease to get" supposed to influence the placement? Because if "ease to get" was supposed to influence the placement, I think there is no way pyramids deserve S-tier. I also really like the pyramids, but my experience is that it feels like the AI always gets the pyramids around turn 2 or maybe turn 3. It is essentially impossible to get pyramids. I think you essentially would need to be playing as China, and having your first city located in vicinity of desert (but not in desert, because you also need some productive tiles). In that special case of China + first city close to desert, it might be possible to get pyramids if rushing builders and making use of the China builder ability which allows them to speed up wonder construction from build charges. Other than that, I feel like it is usually better to try for Temple of Artemis, just because you are much more likely to complete it in time. Another problem with Pyramids is that in the early game, you haven't explored that much. This means you can't scout the wonder progress of your AI opponents. So there is a bigger risk of just having wasted your production.
@VanBradley
@VanBradley 3 жыл бұрын
A big part of the video at the beginning is trying to explain that I weighted certain considerations higher or lower depending on the wonder. Most of what you said about pyramids is completely correct and yet despite all of the reasons it’s difficult to get I ALWAYS make a play for it if I can. The ability is also one of the best in the game and comes really early, which I weighted much higher than the difficulty of getting it. For the Taj Mahal I weighted “ease to get” way higher because that’s one of the main reasons I find myself going for it. Not because of the ability, which is the reason I always go for the pyramids. Additionally, I’m trying to rate the wonders taking into consideration that people play Civilization on all the difficulties and the vast majority play on prince or king. For the pyramids, Machu Picchu, etc... they’re only impossible to get on 1/8 of the difficulties and it’s the one with the least amount of players play on. Anyways, most of the considerations had to be weighted differently based on the wonder and it’s always hard to do a list like this! 😂 Super stoked about your comment though and always love a chat about Civ 🎉🤘

I don't know if you missed it or not, but Amundsen-Scott Research Station *must be built on Snow.* Not Tundra, Snow. Not just any Snow, but Snow that has a Campus near it. Unless you're playing Canada or Russia and are planning on building it from early game, you'll *never* meet the requirements. Even if you place a city at a suitable place, it'll take a ton of time to build it because that city will never be able to properly grow and get enough Production. It's in the "Would Never Build" category for me. Even more, it comes so late and it's in *Culture Tree.* What would you need Science for at that stage? If you're playing a Science game, by the time you got Cold War you probably already got all Techs you need or are close to getting them because your Culture will fall behind. If you play a Culture game, you probably don't need Science that much as there isn't much in the Science tree for Culture beyond Flight and Radio. It won't give you anything for Diplomatic or Religion games, and if you're going for Domination Victory you already should've snowballed so hard that there's nothing that would stop you.

I think most of us do play on Deity. Anyways, my thoughts: The more you talk, the more likely you are to contradict yourself, and we love hearing you talk as much as possible, so I wouldn't fret it! With your tiers ranking from "would build every game if I could" down to "would never build," I'm wondering where in the ranks you would add an additional tier "situationally game-changing." I concede that it's a cop-out answer, but so many of them are paradigm-shifting with the right map and planning, but a minor convenience without. So would wonders that fall into that tier be between the top two tiers, the bottom two tiers, or somewhere in between... Did you just finish a string of Tourism victories? Because this ranking seems to heavily lean to that approach. You've got Broadway sandwiched between Ben and the Colosseum, and Kilwa's in the same tier. And Bolshoi on the same tier as Potala and (especially) Mausey, and Hermitage not on one of the bottom two tiers? Wow. Don't get me wrong, I love culture victories, mostly because of how many different ways you can pursue them- some civs (Gitarja, Lautaro, Betrayyou, Jay, Kris) have such potent tourism bonuses that you can accidentally win a culture victory without trying. And with any civ, the combination of walling up all cities, getting some religious tourism, a few national parks, ski resorts on every (non-adjacent) mountain and every flat tile on your coastline having seaside resorts pretty much gets you there, whether you're Japan or Macedon, and finishing off by spamming any one of four city-states tile improvements, and you're there without every building a theater square. Don't get me wrong, theaters are a potent method of generating tourism and by having some wonders (and a special bank) in the Curator Pingala city makes a big difference, but the point is that if you can house the GWs in theater buildings you never really need a wonder for that purpose, and their other benefits, a single free civic from one and a random inspiration and 20% culture (in just that city)from the other doesn't justify their cost to me. And since tourism serves no purpose other than spiking a tourism victory (one of my gripes) the only other thing they give is culture, which you do need in non-tourism victory games. But I find that I do just fine with border expansion and civic progression in my Religious/Science/Dom/Diplo games without ever having built a single theater: 4 out of the 6 cultural city states can carry your civic progression pretty much independently supplemented by various civ abilities plus this-or-that natural wonder and other culture-generation methods. Every time I think, "this would be a great spot for the Hermitage" I immediately correct myself by building a settler instead- Hey, settle a city and you get 3 out of Hermitage's 4 GW slots by buying an art museum, plus making another city instead of the Hermitage gets you its science generation, gold/faith/and even culture generation, another trade route slot, and another production center. Even if all its district's adjacencies are 0, it's still better to produce a junky city instead of either wonder. Finally, a quick rundown of some differences of opinion on some of these (not suggesting that one of us is right and the other wrong, just a difference of opinion...) -My problem with Estadio is that, for the majority of the game, I'm trying to get by on amenities for my 12-17 cities by snagging any amenity generation available without killing a district slot on entertainment districts before the AoE buildings come about, From luxuries to suzereinities to Colosseum to great merchants, and I'm always content in every city (If I'm more than content, it means I should make more cities.) Then the first-tier AoE buildings become available as well as the water district and a second AoE coverage, and my cities are between happy and barely ecstatic. But when the the two layers of powered AoE buildings are unlocked, every city goes to ecstatic for pretty much the remainder of the game. As Estadio becomes available at the same time as the powered amenity buildings, I don't see any use for it.. ever. -Agree that Kototofufoto Inn is atrocious, but wouldn't it be interesting if it gave you nihangs instead of warrior monks when they were released... -Macchu Picchu: I'm not sure whether you're weighing in the difficulty of being beaten out of a wonder by the Deity AI. You did mention that some wonders got brought down a tier or two because you're never going to be able to build them at this difficulty, others you considered bringing up a notch because "would I build this more on a lower difficulty," but having Macchu Picchu on the top tier? That one usually goes before wonders of earlier eras, and while its effects are good, they're situational- it's consistently OK (an extra 1, maybe 2 on about half of those three districts) and rarely great (an extra 2 or 3 on the majority of those three districts), and the super-heavy mountain-adj tiles have campuses and holy sites. -How Mausey found its way to your third tier is beyond me. I get that you don't like coastal cities and navies and whatnot, but just about every game has at least a couple, and the one with the most sea resources is going to A.) have a harbor and B.) run those tiles anyways, so getting 3 extra prominent yields (that help all victory conditions) from each tile there in a wonder that (from my experience) is not as heavily contested make it a go-to in nearly every game, for me. -St.Basil vs. Petra: one makes a trashy-desert city into a mega-city, one makes a trashy tundra city into a mega-city. The total number of yields are higher with Petra, I'll give you that, but the base yields of tundra tiles are higher than desert. This means if you try for the wonder and lose, you're punished more severely for missing Petra instead of St. Basil. Plus, Petra you can never (except Qin) take full advantage of, you'll need some production chops as the tiles are garbage before Petra, and woods/deer/etc are never found in desert, so you're often boosting between 6 and 10 tiles as the rest aren't desert and non-floodplains, whereas St. Basil can usually get the majority of tiles within the 3-ring boosted, you can chop and later replant the tundra woods (the deer are gone for good though.) Plus, in my experience, Petra is highly, HIGHLY contested whereas St. Basil will often not go for the entire game unless Peter or Willy are AIs. What's more, while they both significantly boost tiles in their city, that's it for Petra, it's one dimensional, whereas St. Basil also offers a (minor) boost to potential tourism as well. So how the wonder that is one-dimensional instead of two, is harder to get because it's earlier and because its more contested, punishes you more for missing it, and affects fewer tiles finds itself 3 tiers higher than the other... I find that ranking... interesting. -Here's the thing about Venetian Arsenal... I know you don't like boats. But I always try for this wonder for peaceful games. Because when you're going for a diplomatic, scientific, tourism, or (sometimes) religious game, you want to just build your infrastructure and not worry about warring (once you claim your territory, which is over before VA is available.) You still need a military to deter the AI from DoWing you, but you want to spend as little production (and gold maintenance) as possible to establish the minimum military strength necessary to make them not DoW you. The AI doesn't understand or consider the difference between an effective or ineffective military, just what the number is. This wonder lets you double your "Don't F- with me" rating per hammer that you put into it. You then have a rather ineffective sea-carpet of units just sitting there, but no one dares to DoW you, letting you Sim-City your way to victory. Apologies again for a book instead of a comment- Told ya I got a problem with that ;)

Not gonna lie, I think this review is EXTREMELY accurate... for pangea/continental games. That said, I think it's WAAAAAY off in a few key ways for Archipelago/small continents players. 1) Great Lighthouse is A tier for me (try to build almost every game) as the +1 Naval movement stacks with that from great generals, techs, etc. and is hugely useful/fairly cheap to build. 2) ToA is a D-tier for me as I rarely ever have a camp to build it buy, and if I do, there aren't often camp/pasture/plantation tiles nearby to make it "worth" it. 3) Venetian arsenal is easy A/S tier. On maps with more land/water balance, you're building WAY more boats, WAY earlier, both for naval dom/protection, and (significantly) to protect trade routes from barbarians. Venetian arsenal saves you SO much production, it's virtually indespensible in any balanced-map game. 4) Mausoleum is EASY S-tier. Would get in every imaginable game, if I could. Maus + Liang fisheries = God-tier city that is one of your best in empire. Period. Also, the extra Great Engineer charge can translate into literally thousands of free production from Engineers like Imhotep and Gustave Eiffel. --Side note not connected with naval maps-- 5) Big Ben I put in A/S tier. Big Ben + Oracle + Pingala gives you like, 8 Great Merchant points per turn, which is nothing to sneeze at. Big Ben + Reina in a high-gold city never hurts either. Not out of the way on tech tree, and AI never gets it. 5) Stonehenge is a solid B/A tier for me too. If I have stone at start, I'm probably trying to build it. This is simply because I always play with heroes/legends, so I KNOW I'm always going to need a pretty high faith output to resurrect my heroes. If I need high faith, having a religion gives you major control over increasing your faith, and it means your Holy Sites actually... Are doing something. For me, it hurts--bad if I don't get a religion as it seems like such a waste of opportunity cost for my holy sites. (also, I don't care who you are, feed the world is amazing in virtually every game, and if you don't found your religion first... good luck!!)
@noblezarkon
@noblezarkon 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot of what you say but Stonehenge?? Ugh. The production is better used on another Holy Site or a Shrine, don't see the value in it all. If the AI build it in a city near me I will try and kill their religion before they have the ability to produce missionaries :-)
@kelleren4840
@kelleren4840 3 жыл бұрын
@@noblezarkon yeah, that's a fair point. I guess for me, the value is that in my early cities, I don't always have the pop for multiple districts, and Harbors + Campuses are my first two choices. Building stonehedge let's me have a religion and those early campus/harbors down without worrying about missing a religion. That said, I can definitely see a strong argument for going early Holy Site + Prayers to lockdown a religion and skipping stonehedge entirely.

He talks about how awkward placement is usually a negative to building some of these wonders. Here's the thing on Deity though: to me, that becomes a plus. I'm much better at planning a city that can build and use Mausoleum than the AI. I get it almost every single game, with very little effort. My fourth or fifth city, I'll settle coast, and look for decent production, and plan to build this from the start. One neat trick is if you use the last charge of a Great Engineer like Imhotep to build it, it will add an extra charge to your engineer before deleting the unit, so you can use it one more time.

You have to go Masonry immediately and you need the boost or some Science city state. Otherwise, no luck. AI builds it between turn 30 and 35. At least, that is my experience. A bit like Stonehenge or Great Bath before that specific patch. The Great Bath is increased from F to D (or C) tier, because AI tend to leave it until turn 50-60 (or later) more often. And you can actually build it as a replacement for a Dam (depending what you want to get from your Dam, because no adjacency from Great Bath). Great Lighthouse is a bit better than never build. As Norway with mathematics it gets your longships up to 6 total movement, this allows them to naval raid twice in one turn I believe. Bolshoi and Hermitage are both better than Braodway in culture games as they come earlier to generate more tourism from their greatworks and the wonders themselves generate more from being from earlier eras. Braodway is basically a never build in a non-culture game unless you are trying to defend against a tourism win. Kilwa in anything less than S teir is just a shame mark on a wonder teir list and makes me sad. The example you gave is even a good situation. +15% gold in a science game can allow you to instantly buy buildings in all your campuses sooner. This wonder could live in S tier with just Pyramids and Oracle and nothing else. Also you realized how amenities work when discussing T.o.A. after forgetting on Huey even though they essentially do the same thing from an amenity standpoint.

So sad they have gone into soothsayers, zombies and marching your units into volcanos. I could go on and on - it's as if it's designed by teenagers for teenagers. Literally nothing, from the very first release, makes sense, if you think about it - like: what are amenities, and why do theatre squares not provide them? I think the concept of unbundling a city from one spot is great, the hex stuff is great, the armies don't quite work (armies are actually stacked unless besieging), the idea of 2 tech trees is great - but in everything there are problems. Then play on deity, the AI will attack you. And you can still get wonders, you just need to be good. I have over 1k hours in civ 6 and if I want a wonder I can get it as long as I dont get early rushed.

@@alex2005z Even some times on emperor they will attacks you, but the problem is that some time you not prepared for defend your cities, you don't have the same production with AI and combat bonus, which is horrible. The most worst thing here is Great People, i can't understand why AI have so bonuses for them. I can accept that AI have unlocked tech, better army, more cities, that's is ok, but they just building wonders every where, without any logic, and grapping GP and not using them some times...
