Hi Everyone, hope you keeping well.
So after knowing I had this issue for a long time I finally decided to replace the entire oil cooler and seal due to the oil finding its way into the coolant.This seems to be a common fault on these vag engines and mine wasn't as bad as some others I've seen. lets see if this will sort the issue out.

Enjoy the video.

An internal leak in the oil cooler, very common problem. My Leon 20vt 1.8t, 220.000 km / 136.000 miles didn't have the problem yet, but I expect it will happen one day. May be I should replace it as a preventive maintenance. Me too, I wish I had a more wider garage, to be able to work comfortably around the car. Outside, rain and some curious neighbours wasting you a precious time to want to know how and what you're doing, we have additional challenges to the mechanical reparation 😁

Whoah, cool. I just got a 2001 VW beetle today for $300 which had oil in the coolant tank. Was going to use it as a parts vehicle for my other VW but realized that perhaps the vehicle may only need a oil cooler change. That would be amazing as the car is in pretty good shape and is a 5-speed manual.

Hi... Can you tell me if having a bad oil cooler will cause the engine to lose power? for example if i am driving and i accelerate it feels like it's misfiring, but it's not because I don't get any codes that it is misfiring. I did find oil in my coolant reservoir. The dipstick and engine don't have any coolant. Just did an oil change. Thanks! I have changed spark plugs, coils, airflow sensor.
@Mk4heavenHD

I have a seat Ibiza 1.8t bjx engine and the coolent tank looks quite brown , been told by a garage it’s probably oil cooler, I can’t see it being a head gasket as the car runs perfect still and doesn’t over heat or have issues. Coolent does look like it has oil in it due to the colour

My thoughts would be the cooler mate, mine was like that for ages. I did everything coolant flush after coolant flush no change until I replaced the oil cooler. There was so much crap in my system I replaced the coolant hoses, flanges and radiator now it stays the pinky colour it should be.

@Mk4heavenHD
@Mk4heavenHD 3 жыл бұрын
@@rioc3834 It should be okay with just a fresh oil cooler and flush but to go the extra mile I think if you do rad, flanges and pipes you have a solid car for a long long time. This way whatever oil deposits are in the rad and pipes is eliminated and you know most of the hardware is oil free.

It’s hard to say mate without seeing it, if you have coolant on any hoses that would point to a coolant leak somewhere. If it was oil you would either see it in the coolant mixed together or dripping down the engine block. Hope this helps.

Mayur Ramlall - hi mate, I would probably check that the coolant has had the usual self bleeding done just in case there is an air lock, run the car from cold with the cap off and squeeze the pipes to encourage coolant then put the cap on before it gets too hot. Then check the levels of the coolant expansion tank when it’s up to temp and the fans kick in. If this is all okay then check the wiring and plug on the expansion tank.

WaifuRacer - Mine did have slight sludge on the oil cap and my crank case vent pipes with stock setup but after I upgraded everything on the car and now run a vent to atmosphere setup it’s behaving itself. To be honest as long as you maintaining it with regular oil changes like what you doing 4-5k is good and not doing too many short journeys it should be okay. I would probably look at doing a catch can with vent to atmosphere setup my car seems to like it. It is a common thing on the 1.8T tho.
