I’m a civil engineering student who lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has been watching your videos for a while. The fact that you have our walking bridge in your video is amazing.

Ben thanks for the video. I'm a bit surprised when you talk about architecture as 'a bit on the artsy side'. comments like that tend to belittle and distort the perception of the profession. I think you need to give it more cred. i would tend to describe it more as the development of the aesthetic, the integration of the human elements and the way we humans approach our spaces, interactions and functionality whilst creating the cultural and urban utility. these are very important aspects. lets embrace and promote the other professions that we work alongside and not distort peoples perceptions of a profession. btw I'm not an architect but an engineering (mech) and design professional with over 40 yrs exp. cheers

No worries! I really had no intention of belittling architectural work and was just trying to give a simplified generalisation, because yes, compared to engineering which can be extremely technical in topics such a mathematics, physics and material science, architecture is more artsy. Architects are deciding on building layout and functionality like you’ve mentioned without worrying about these heavy technical works. It’s just a different role and without a doubt it’s less technical but there’s nothing wrong with that. It definitely has its own challenges and by no means is it easy work. Also, you have gave a great definition here in your comment. Thanks for sharing :)

Maybe I'm just old school. But with just an honours Civil Engineering degree from a reputable university in England, I have, over the past 4 decades, designed and supervised the construction of multi-storey buildings and pre-cast parking garages (Structural Engineering), designed geometric alignment of highways and traffic control systems (Transportation Engineering), designed retaining walls and building foundations (Geotechnical Engineering), designed detention ponds, delineated flood plains and developed hydrologic/Hydraulic models of water sheds to support master planning (Water/Hydraulic Engineering), supervised large-area Land surveying for infrastructure development using airborne LIDAR and total stations (Geomatics Engineering) etc. The point is, there are many specialties in Civil Engineering. But expertise/competence in one specialty does not preclude competence in others.

What is the current state of Structural Engineering? In a video from another channel, I saw many people criticizing the field, mentioning issues such as: 'the remuneration is not proportional to the effort.' I am a Civil Engineering student, and I plan to specialize in Structural Engineering with the goal of eventually opening my own firm in the area. However, I must admit that these comments can be discouraging. Moreover, I study Python and have a general interest in programming. I'm already thinking about how I could apply programming skills in the profession of a structural engineer. I would like to hear opinions about the market and whether these criticisms reflect reality.
