I'd forgotten how unforgiving the battles were in this game. I now vividly recall modern battleships being destroyed while attacking a phalanx.

I bought Civ 1 when it first came out. I played, and my wife noticed it, and she asked to play. Soon, it was one hour per person, swapping off. That lasted one day, then she got her own computer.

You mentioned when a CIV gets eliminated, a new CIV will replace them. This is true but they are not random. All the CIVs are color coded, like your Russians share the white color with the Romans, so the Romans will not spawn. Germans were eliminated so they will be replaced with the French since they share the color blue. Since you destroyed the French, blue has been completely eliminated, and will not be replaced. I hope I remember this correctly but the other colors are: Green - Zulu and Babylonians Yellow - Egyptians and Aztec Cyan - Americans and Chinese Pink - Greek and English Black - Indian and Mongol You only have access to certain colors number of CIVs you pick at the start of creation. White, Green and Blue for 3 CIVs. Then with 4 Yellow is added, 5 you get Cyan, 6 you get Pink and 7 you get Black added. It takes a bit away from the randomness of each playthrough, but I loved this color coding when I played as a kid. Congrats on your 10 year anniversary, I watched this playthrough when it was pretty fresh but it's nice having it all in one video again.

Civ was the first PC game to get me into turn-based strategy and I haven't looked back!! :) Back when different victory types were interesting, and you could conqueror the world without absurd amounts of unhappiness tanking your cities! I still have my copy of the 'Rome on 640k a day' guide book..... It was always fun to edit the text files in Civ, so you could insult the other leaders.....

I had no idea you used to go by a different KZbin name. I much prefer Nookrium! Also used to play the hell out of Civ 1 on my uncles computer back in the late 90s early 2000s. Had no idea what I was doing but it is probably why I love 4x games today. Thanks for sharing this with us!

I played civ 1 on snes. Then civ2,3, and then 4 BTS was my favorite. I played 5 but mostly hated it, and haven't returned to the series since.
@Smokey2983 ай бұрын
Why did you dislike 5?
@entelin3 ай бұрын
@@Smokey298 I think my opinion is going to be slightly biased because I believe it's fairly widely acknowledged that 5 had a pretty awful launch, and that's when I played it. For example it had awful AI, bad performance, wasn't stable, etc. So while I'm sure it got much better, the other things I didn't like were these things mainly: 1. I like doom-stacks. I felt like they were a perfectly fine and logical way of managing numerous units. You still had all the strategic options of 5+ in that terrain gave you different bonuses and such, you could still build fortifications and all of that. You could break units off from your army stacks to chase down other units, whatever you wanted to do you had the flexibiliy to do it. However getting rid of stacking meant that you had potentially crap tons of units scattered all over the place, which just took much more time to deal with, and was mostly uninteresting because many of them were not immediately strategically important anyway not being on the front lines. Another consequence to that was that ships were greatly simplified since now you wouldn't be loading an army onto ships, they would just "become" ships to cross the ocean. I think that's just much less interesting than how it was previously. 2. I don't like city states. It's always felt like a silly gimmick to me. The game should be about providing depth to the civilisations, and that may mean they are able to develop into city states, as one may do going "tall" in stellaris for example, but having it just forced into the game totally separately I think is pretty lame. I DO however like hexes, and multi tile distances for certain weapons, those things I always felt civ should have and it would have made civ4 an even better game. I was actually quite excited about civ5 for that reason.
@Smokey2983 ай бұрын
@@entelin I have mixed feeling about the unit stacking but I felt like the multi tile range on ranged units was worth it. But see I only played civ1 civ rev and then civ5 From watching gameplay of civ 6 it looks like I prefer 5 but I haven officially played 6.

I guess the iroic part of seeing this classic is that modern kids will never understand how it was back in the 90s into 2000s were PCs and then internet became "normal". Till this day my mind is always very tactical and i try to keep the information in mind that i have about something to make a better choise that is based on logic and not on emotion, because just because you want to take a city with your army doesnt mean that it's strong enoth just because you "feel like" you should be like this. Sadly this is one of the reasons why i find the modern world so annoying, because i've had games where a religionspread and sudenly "my city" choise that it is now no longer frieldly to me, because they now have new values and after losing an important ciry i was done, because i was cut of from something that i needed to build the unit that could've stand a chance against the armys at my border. In Germany the army is looking to hire more people, because of Russia, but the left is against having an army... I wonder who they will say should fight back if Russia and China decide that they want to take over the Baltic sea. I bet they will send one of those "you will pay for what you did" screens to the enemy and send peace requests every turn.

I wish I had been your military adviser on this. You didn't use diplomats which are great for attacking cities (taking out city walls, creating civil unrest, etc) but also for taking scientific advances/ "tech". Also, you left quite large bits of land unguarded by cities and some of those remote cities weren't well connected by road, leaving them open to Mongol attack. I think you could also have benefitted from spending more money buying military units, building barracks (which boosts military units to veteran status and would have won you many more battles) and also going into battle with support from defensive units like phalanx so you could hold on to territory. It's a tough level but still "winable" with the right strategy.
