I enjoyed watching the whole game, I learned a lot of neat tricks. I prefer this original version of Civ over the newer ones, it feels more like a board game without needing to invest a month playing 1 match. And the old pixel art style is charming. Civ 2 is also a lot of fun.

Thanks @Justin Bohemier, I also prefer the original version of Civ for exact the same reasons, it can be finished in a few hours, and yes the old pixel art is pretty ok :)

Funny you should say that, Sid Meier was inspired by a world-building board game when he first made Civilization.

hehehe it is an old game, still OK to play even in 2024 I would say, music and graphic is not great, but for the time it was excellent, the idea and games are still fun :)

Thanks a lot. I have chosen to do videos that I like myself, and what interests me often doesn't interest the general public so I don't expect too many views, but doing things I enjoy :) if I wanted more viewers/subs I would have to film more cute cats, or do food cooking videos (which I did one LOL) :)

You can indeed predict where shields are. They follow the same pattern on the whole map, so you just need a few grassland tiles to predict the rest.

thanks, I learnt that thanks to a commend on my video so now I know how to do it, but for over 30 years I didn't LOL :) it is powerful to know that, always build on a good place on river and make string grassland from swamp when possible and forest on "bad" grassland

Just started watching. I always played Civ 1 on Warlord because anything higher always seemed like I was getting outpaced by the AI. I admire how you carefully expanded and fenced the AI without any conflict. I also think I get too bogged down in trying to build infrastructure, I'll need to give your method of expanding as quickly as possible a try.

at the higher levels the AI get huge advantages and battles are harder. But yeah no time to lose and build Granary/Barracks according to me, build Settlers, block out your enemy so it cannot build it's second or at least Third city, mass up Catapults/Chariots, be an a$$hole (like me) and break the peace, take city, they speak and you can even give them technology for peace and repeat while building more cities and take land, no worries if the city is small in the beginning :)

Thank you for the comment, I have so much fun playing this game, I like it has a start and end, the modern games done today seems so funny and well done, but they have no end, and there is always that "pay real money" to get cool stuff, less heart than the old games that was just for fun, not money :)

At the time I developed a very similar playing style. Although I stopped my own expansion at 4-5 cities and acquired everything after that through military means rather than planting down a lot of cities initially. Great playthrough so far, thanks for playing.

Thanks, and I agree with you that you don't need to build so many cities yourself, enough to have a few with enough shields to build chariots and then take already built cities from your enemy :)

Hi, totally respect that, it is a very old game and the graphic and all is old. Since I played it back in the 90s it is a lot of nostalgia for me, but else I would probably never have played it. I still have fun. Thanks for your nice commend :)

Thank you for this gameplay! Just watched the first episode and already learned some tricks. I love this version, played it on my Amiga500, waiting sometime minutes for one term. I found it just some day ago online to play free, but never managed to get victory beyond the level of prince. The ai just get's too much ahead of me and even so I built the UN, they outrun me in the spaceship-challenge. I'm curios about how you will deal with that in the later episodes.

Hi Glaums, I have another Civ1 play run on my channel where I do go for Space Ships, but these six videos I go ATTACK Chariots only nearly :) easiest win in Civ1 according to me :)

My experience is if the hut is close to a city, there won’t be Barbarians/it’s safe to go there. Also, I tend to let the enemy settler a bit out of sight, let it found a new city and then take it when it’s still unoccupied. Which is a violation, of course, but this early in the game I don’t think I can recall it leading to a real war (I mean if you go to talk to the enemy, they will offer you peace, situation solved 😂). (just for clarity, I also play on Emperor setting) And I just noticed you have some other videos, gotta check them. I feel there’s not that much gameplays on King or Emperor to watch. Sadly I don’t enjoy watching gameplays of those who haven’t played it much and/or play on easier difficulty than King, it’s simply not interesting to me. I did play the Civ II a bit but never really got into that one, didn’t have the patience to learn all the new stuff and the layout annoyed me. So I still play the first one. 😂 I don’t mind the graphics at all, I only wish the politics could be more advanced, as you know, peace doesn’t really mean anything in this game. 😄 Or forming real alliances or better possibilities to ensure peace with someone etc.

Correct, city next to hut NEVER give barbarians :) or if you NEVER built a city (meaning your starting settler) you cannot get the Barbarians either. Smart tip, to let the settler found a city and then go and take it (even if break war) good tip! When I started in the 90s I played easiest and up to Emperor and once finished Emperor I never went back to easier. I don't mind the graphic either, and agree 100% with the politics, to be able to have more options and like you wrote, "peace" means nothing... during peace you shouldn't be allowed to have any armies directly next to a city etc... but yeah speak about a game created over 30 years ago so still amazing. I got more videos and actually recorded an Earth Play that I edited one hour one but missing two more to edit, so hope to get it out sometime in January.

I have installed DOSbox www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 which is free, just to run DOS games. then to get the actual Civilization 1, I think you can still buy it, just google search "Download Sid Meier's Civilization 1"

Why do you still play an old game like this? Sometimes I boot up Ceasar 2, it still feels like it has the best kind of groundwork for a game like that and always gives a challenge on the higher difficulties. If Im honest I don't feel particularly nostalgic about it. Civ 1 seems like it's easy to pick up and just play if you can get past the graphics and the clunky interface. Just curious!

Hahaha that is a great question, and I'm not sure what the answer is :). It is still fun for me to play this game (if I don't play to win, just to try different styles of playing) and you are totally right, the graphic and all is horrible (even if great at the time 1991). A lot of nostalgia when playing for sure and also fun, I do enjoy it. I like to know that when I start there is an end and it will take me from 1-7 hours to complete it. To play more modern (and more fun games) would be dangerous for me, World of Warcraft or alike with no end, it could consume my life and make me less effective at work and as a father :)

The "You Tube wise men have discovered the secret of ....." bannerhead is infinitely memeable. Replace the KZbin with any other social media site name, they are all comedy gold. Glad the algo boosted you to me! Civ 1 was a fun game and one that took me time to master in the pre-internet days.

Hahaha true about the banner head :) Civ 1 like most pre-Internet days fames had a clear start and end, todays game has a start obviously but not a clear end, level up and you could play unlimited. Civ 1 got this nice touch of always want to know what happens next move, and with the random map each game feels a bit different and a clear goal/end :)

You can find sites to download DOS version of Civ1, or buy it, and then you install www.dosbox.com/ and run it from there :) that is how I do it

Yeah pretty nice to play white, green or grey, since often Russian, Zulu and Mongols can be very dangerous. I pressed ESC so it picked random :) I was lucky this game that the Russian didn't start in an area where they could expand and be big empire

@@ultimategamer2669 They can indeed send Settlers to other landmasses, they do that pretty frequently. I think what you might have heard is that they cannot transport Caravans, and that is true, they build a Caravan and it gets "teleported" to a city, so you will never see an enemy Caravan walking around. The same goes for Enemies Diplomats, they appear out of thin air suddenly like 2 spaces from your city. Enemies don't need to build Wonders of the World also, they are randomized and given to them.

Save and load = savescumming Click the setlers to quick build = exploit Changing build que to make it cheaper. Not a cheat. That is a game play mechanic

agree :) When I was little boy and played this, I often saved before attacking with Battleship to ensure to take a coastal city. The last 10 years I have never used the save and load, the settler quick build I rarely use but sometimes I do. The changing building I do in my sleep :)

I did buy Civ2 and played it a few times. I think it was pretty good, they changed things I didn't like with Civ1 such as giving armies a health metering so you hardly never beat an army in one attack. Strangely I never really liked Civ2, because I was always doing military victories in Civ1 and in Civ2 I think you had to be more clever LOL :) I remember Civ2 had pretty much nicer graphic, voice of the advisors (will remember that the advisors were useless, they always suggested the wrong things :) ) Have you played Civ2 and liked it?

@@IntuneVitaDoctrina well, when civ 1 was still a game i played, I had only access to a 8086 with EGA, it played decently well, but slow, I never played it that much. I later played winciv, a bit, but I mostly played civ 2. One thing I noticed on civ 2 is that the default Map is to big, so a lot of things become unbalanced. I do like the healthbar , that alows you to team up and beat stonger opnents in a tactical way. I usually play Prince or king dificulty because.. well.. I like to win, and do it with large margin. The healthbar can be removed in the starting settings, then it played pretty much like civ1, well with more units. I would agree to the balacing is a bit of, but it can be played around. The reason I asked is tha there exist the never ending war/1000 year war challenge. Where a dude played the game untill year 3000 at the time there been a 1000 year stamte war. The challeng is to download the year 3000 save and win the war. Sttangly I have seen nobody do it on video.

@@IntuneVitaDoctrina would point out that ny favorite game in the series is colonization. It have much more freedom to do what you want then civilization.
