One thing I loved about Civ, that I only discovered after we had it for years, was that ALL text in the game existed in .txt files that were amazingly easy to edit! I remember being 12, and my dad loved the game, so I stayed up all night, and edited all the text, from the intro movie (I think it partially exists because the world is being generated while it plays), through to everything else. He totally freaked out when the opening movie started it's first two normal lines, only to go "Wait, wait... again? Larry, seriously? How many times are you going to start a new game? Should I even give you choices, or just assume you'll play Shaka Zulu again?" He had no idea what was going on LOL.

That was always the best thing about old games, how easy it was to "mod" them. I remember picking up a sprite in Civ 2 and changing the settlers unit to be a tiny Dr Phil by editing the image in MS Paint.

That long intro had a point... on computers of the day, it actually took almost all that time to generate the map!
@modiFive
@modiFive 5 жыл бұрын
Not on Amiga. This intro is the first thing you see after starting the diskette with this game, and it's unskippable, not like on DoS, where you see it after setting a map, and you can skip it as soon as the map is generated. So if you want to play it on Amiga, you have additional around 10 minutes to make yourself something to eat and drink.
@craigh5236
@craigh5236 4 жыл бұрын
@@modiFive You are remembering it wrong. On the Amiga it was, start game, select map settings (large, arid,etc) then you got the intro (map generation) then you get to pick difficulty, number of civs, etc. I played civ 1 first one an amiga 500, eventually ended up with a much faster 1200 and that intro speed was much shorter on the 1200 which I had upgraded.

Oh, the AI definitely cheats. This series even has it's own folder on the "The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard" trope page in the Notable Offenders area. For example, this game in particular: -Improvements in the Emperor level are about a third of the cost for the computer -Technologies are discovered at alarming rates -Wonders can be built almost instantly -The computer's caravans are transported instantaneously -The computer never has production penalties despite city-wide riots -Your Triremes sink if they end their turn too far from shore. Computer controlled ones can sail across the Atlantic with no problem -The computer can build spaceships without the required tecnology Et cetera

We had the Mac version of this game in the 90s and it became the first computer game I was ever addicted to. I could barely focus on schoolwork. I couldn't wait to get home to play and then I'd play it for hours! It's amazing I didn't flunk out of school, I did so little homework. The only other game that got me as excited/addicted to play was Myst.

Mine as well. However my first run in with this franchise was on the PlayStation one. I still have the same disc from 20 years ago😂. Anyway I found this cheat code in a old magazine back then that enables you to get pretty much infinite money so you can buy and build everything almost immediately. Added a whole new dynamic to the game when playing on Emperor. Bought a Pc a few years later and never looked back.

Totally agreed. It is very much this one game's fault that I got high grades in English and history in school back in the early 90s. It might not be the game I've played the most, but it is easily (with a HUGE margin!) the game that I've enjoyed the most. Plus I love the music. It has something very, very special to it, that I cannot explain. :) ----------------------- I noticed that you said it came on 2x 5.25" disks. Aren't they just 1.2 MB each? My big brother had Civ I as well, and it was 3x 3.5" (1.44 MB) disks. 4, if he used one for savegames.

Lol. You name stuff after Duke Nukem in your videos I noticed. I used to do the EXACT same thing when I was a teen. In Civ, my leader would be Duke Nukem. In Sim City my town would be named after him. Or if I played an RPG that you could name your characters (Like 'Final Fantasy' or 'Earthblund), I would name them Duke. The Duke Nukem franchise was one of my most favorite games. So was Civilization, and Sim Earth, Sim City, etc. Other franchises were Doom and Silent Hill. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Time Killers. I never played 'Way of the Warrior' on 3DO, but I imagined I would love it.

I frequent CivFanatics, generally regarded as THE place to go for Civilization fans. I must say that Civ IV was the last decent title in the series, everything else after that has been lackluster. From time to time I play Civ IV with normal settings, but on a hard difficulty (Immortal/Diety). There is a guy here on KZbin I watch who plays Diety on a regular basis. The standard settings, normal map with six other civilizations to compete against, nothing special. Truly what keeps me coming back is the challenge to the game, you actually have to have a bit of skill to play on Diety. I learn more from those who play on high difficulties compared to those who play on low difficulties. Doesn't matter to me how big the map is, usually a 14,000 tile map suits me just fine. Unfortunately Civ IV was slow to play at the time it was released, and today's high end computers still have a tough time keeping it smooth in the late game. Especially if you were on a Huge map with 17 other Civs, moving around hundreds of military units while micromanaging all your cities and workers. What you're asking for is more along the lines of Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall. That was TOO BIG.

A very satisfying video. As someone who has come to age between Pong and Super Mario World I can fully agree. "Old" games aren't really old. The are just less marketable from a corporative perspective. But from an IRL perspective the good ones are as valid as chess, or backgammon. Just recently I downloaded a game from 2005 (not that old from my view), "The Movies". The result? Hours of satisfying gameplay.

There is no cities view in Civ IV, it is the same than Civ 5. There are many aspect I also prefer in Civ 4, but the the city view is the same...

This is my top game, the best game in the world and of all time in my book. I was so adept at it... I cam to be able to play at most difficult level, and also, you get quickly boared in winning by conquest, so I always played for winning the game by reaching alpha Centauri. I always liked to somewhat "preserve" the other civs and see how they evolved on the map. My favorite strategy is aiming for universal sufferage and also building united nations wonder, to be able to always force peace each time I spoke to a leader with a diplomat. with a prosperous and advanced republic you can have a small army of diplomats and diffuse wars by forcing peace all the time, only needing to use military units defensively, or to correct a gross imbalance by one of the other civs.

As someone who's only ever played Civ 5, it looks like not much has changed. I can still spot many familiar mechanics under the layer of DOS graphics. That's not often the case for old games that are still going in the modern day.

Nothing makes me happier than when a game, piece of software, etc. Is designed such that you can boot it up with zero outside knowledge and learn everything about how to use it inside the program.

I'm not going to lie, no matter how hard I try to play the other Civ games, they don't compare to Civ 2 to me. Something about it just makes me want to go back to it no matter what the graphical changes or additions to the newer ones

Game wasn't balanced, though. You could build a ton of cities, each with one square buffer and get to space in like 300AD easily. It was OP but less fun than the normal way of playing (cities 4ish squares apart)
