you don't need to be coastal to build ships, just a tile on the water to build the harbor district

Citys that are not builded directly at the coast can still be "coastal" and produce ships if you build a harbor in the city.

Drew, you don't need to get the eureka/inspiration before you start. If you get it mid way, it still adds science/culture. It may even finish the tech you are working on.

I'm taking what I know from quill18 videos. Firstly, take notes as to where certain districts and wonders can be placed. Second, do your best to get adjacency bonuses with farms and districts. Lastly, make sure to space your cites within 6 hexes of each other; there is a massive production bonus for industrial districts. PLEASE READ THIS DREW Unless you want to learn it on your own.

Drew if you want to put your next city to the north on the coast go for it but I think you need to drop one where that enclosed barb camp is between you and Greece. It may not have a ton of amenities around it or allow for perfect district layout but it is a defensive dream think Helms Deep from lotr

To me, the advantage of one more city is rarely offset by all the negatives of taking the city state. Both the warmongering penalty, and just not having a city state to get those juicy bonuses from.

Drew, if you research technologies you won't lose the possible bonus points from eurekas as long as you don't surpass the half of the tech. The "bonus-slice" will be pushed towards the end of the research time.

The Casus Belli does not play a big role early. The Warmongering is linked with the epoch you are in and grows with every advancement

I'd really like the civs to be named according to what they were referred to back when their respective leaders, well, led said civ. HRE for "Germany", for example. I mean, they didn't call rome "Italy", after all..

You overestimate the importance of a costal start, dude. As long as the coast is in district-construction-range you can build a harbour district and have your coastal city anyway even if the city itself is not directly at a coast.

Ok you have some neighbours that seem to be not very good for being agressive on city states. But remember the earlier you go to war the better on the warmonger count since the penalties are based on the area you (or the world on average?) is in. So I think as long as you stick to some early warfare only takeing out one or two of them you should still be good overall. Maybe it will need some time for some people to reduce some bad modifiers you get from this but that is likley more due to their agendas than dues to a general we hate city state murders penalty.

you know, you can start a tech then eureka to finish it. you dont lose anything to start teching early. thuu if you go byond halfway you lose some of of the good about eurka and insperation

It does seem that diplomacy is way more important in IV, as are the first eras. Even in prince you cannot rely mostly on snowballing from technology in the late game. Every tile counts. Every declaration of war has lasting effects. Every unit is a valuable asset, as you cannot spam them as much. You're on your toes for most of the game. It looks reeealy promising. I won't buy it, though. I need these endless hours to do other things, like work and sleep and... Also, can't wait for the AI onlys. The border gore will be Bangladesh style...
