4:37-4:51 Easily the most adorable and hilarious moment in the whole video. Alfred and Guthrum also seem to have a Goku-Vegeta relationship. Alfred almost always wins, and he wants to be Guthrum's friend. Guthrum wants power, and really doesn't want to be Alfred's friend. Later on though, with time, they do become friends. Close friends at that.

To elaborate just a smidge on the 'getting lost in a fog'. It did happen, but there was some help. Alfred's mother was the daughter of Charles the Bald of France, and therefore Charles III had ships around France (thanks in part to Rollo of Normandy), stopping the ships from sailing through the Channel. And so they got lost in a fog and wrecked on the western coast of England.

Also probably bribes, donations and petitions. It seemed to mostly be putting an official Church stamp on a dead name that was locally considered a saint already. After mostly checking they weren't cannibals/criminals/defilers/etc. Nowadays its a torturous combination of politics, bureaucracy, petitions and intensive investigation (and probably bribes). Also varies depending on which christian sect is doing the canonisation. But yes, they're considered something like a sub-sector manager watching over a specific area of interest and passing up/down information and entreaties.

I find it odd history sees Anglo-Saxons and Danes as two radically different people, depicted as different looking on TV. The Anglo-Saxons invaded England from Denmark a few hundred years earlier. This episode was great. The art, storytelling, all of it combined just felt REALLY good. Keep up the great work! Thank you for producing it for us

Well, this is really good marketing. I didn't even know Thrones of Britannia was coming out and it is very relevant to my interests. Alfred the Great's probably one of my favorite historical figures of all times, and the sheer CHEEK of Guthrum... Also, I admit I got a few goosebumps when you talked about Alfred's guerilla war to take back his kingdom. It's one of my favorite parts.

This might be the best Extra History Yet! It flows so well, the interactions of these characters feels fantastically translated to how a modern audience would interpret them. But then I am a Brit.

I also miss the detailed descriptions of battles that you used to do in your earlier works. Please
@brettd23086 жыл бұрын
One problem for this period is that we just *don't* have detailed descriptions of any of the battles, from any source. It's just stuff like "shield wall crashed against shield wall and {insert faction here} was victorious in arms."

And the establishment of the Danelaw. Where were the fallen kingdoms and what was Guthrums situation in those areas. It was very focused on just two people which provided a great story between the two, but left the context very confusing.
@Bombom13006 жыл бұрын
The other issue here is that maps from this time period weren't always the most defined. Still, knowing the cities locations and general regions would be good, and we know that, at least.

Finished binge-watching all of the extra history playlist. It's good to finally feel that anxiousness for the next video. It's so funny that a cartoon history lessons can bring for so many feelings. It seems like time and time again instead of negotiating he could have just killed him but he didn't. Then in the end gains a friend.

I love it. The Heptarchy is my favorite historical period, so I jumped when I noticed this video was about the Danelaw (I honestly need to read up on it more since the concept seemed to fade as the Danes and Anglo-Saxons began to merge overtime). …also, the animation/illustrations for this episode were just too damned adorable. OωO
